AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

tazzy73 your story gave me the creeps reading it Shock I googled the name you gave, is it that HUGE looking mansion?

Years ago in the house I still live in, I got up to go to the loo in the middle of the night. Walked back into my bedroom & as soon as I crossed the threshold I smelt a very strong smell of lavender. Unmistakable. I am not a fan of lavender so I don’t have anything with that scent in my house. It stayed for quite a few minutes & then just disappeared. I have no idea what it meant.

I have had a few other things happen over the years in this house, feeling my cat on the bed etc. turning the light on to find he wasn’t even in the room. I’ve never really been scared though.

@ladymalfoy Chillingham Castle is one of the weirdest places in Northumberland (the least populated county in England. Although an ex boyfriend reckoned Norfolk ran it pretty close). Some SERIOUSLY unpleasant things have happened there in centuries gone by. The family also used to own a castle in Ireland which you might want to look up....

There are wild wallabies in the UK @Disquieted1 although not sure about Cheshire. Wild/escaped populations in Isle of Man, Peak District, Devon, Kent and East Sussex

When I was younger, myself, DH and 2 other couples went away for the weekend to Wexford.
On returning back to our hotel we seen this huge house/mansion. It was really impressive to see. For some reason we decided to go into the grounds and knock on this door as it looked spectacular. There was something there but didn't know what or why we wanted to knock.

So we knocked and a woman came out and invited us in, we explained about the urge to knock and see the house. She invited us in. Have to be honest from the minute I walked into the house I felt such dread, my hairs on my arms were standing up and my fight or flight had kicked in. I was looking at my friends and they were saying we need to get out of here.
We were all experiencing the same sick feeling. One of the men said we would stay 5 minutes as it wasn't fair on the woman who had let us in. She brought us into a sitting room, I was dragging my feet, I felt sick. No joke I was terrified. I kept telling my DH we needed to leave.

The woman proceeded to tell us the history of the house in which it had changed hands many times and at one time it was an nunnery, another a orphanage. She told us that there were a lot of children buried on the grounds and the house never had any luck with people who lived there. Something always happened.
There were newspapers on the table, all dated over 12 years old.
After a few minutes we said our goodbyes, she was asking us did we want to view upstairs, not a chance, my stomach was rolling.
I couldn't wait to get out. When we left, we stopped outside the gates and I asked how did they all feel. Everyone experienced the same feeling of fear, dread and darkness in the house.
We got back to our hotel, straight to the bar were we spoke to the barman. We told him of going up to the big house, and asked what it was. He told us no-one ever went up there as it was evil and there was no-one there. We explained about the woman. He said no-one lives there.

Months later after the weekend I seen the house on the television and it was coming up as one of the most haunted houses in Ireland.
I really don't think its a spoof as I know how I felt on entering and leaving this building. I think they do tours there. It's called Loftas Hall. There's not a chance I'd go back in there.

Mine still makes my skin crawl to this day. We bought a house that was built in 1959 by the original and only previous owners. They didn't have children and he died in hospice and she died in the house having fallen over.

We had lived there exactly a month (at which point I was starting getting the builders in to evaluate what we could do) when I had a very vivid dream about a woman marching in from the woods that backed onto the house, coming straight into the sunroom and marching up the stairs. In the dream, I was at the top of the stairs. She then screamed at me to get out of HER house and it would never be mine and I woke up. One of my children had similar dreams too.

And THEN my neighbour showed me a photo of the original homeowners and I'm not kidding, it was the same woman. I don't believe in any woohoo crazy shit but we didn't ever feel at home there and sold it as soon as we'd finished the renos. Admittedly, I know my neghbour had already described the original owner in very vague terms, but the photo was the same woman as in my dream. And she was a BITCH! :D

I worked in a hotel till just recently, one day myself and another member of staff were working together on the 1st floor, another member of staff came upstairs to get something from us , he looked all over the 1st floor and even in the room we were in but couldn’t find us, but we were right there on the same floor as him, in the room he had looked into, but he said later that day that when he looked into the room it was empty 😬 also on this same floor sometimes you would sense someone walking past and then immediately look to see who it was and there would be no one there, all the girls refused to work on this floor alone...

NotMyFinestMoment · 29/04/2020 01:31

I had a friend whom I used to visit regularly (and at one point rented a room from him). When going upstairs to use the bathroom I always used to get the feeling I was being watched and it felt very disaproving in nature and this started from the foot of the stairs (which were directly opposite the open kitchen door). I didn't like walking past the kitchen when it was dark or the lights were off. One evening whilst having a conversation with my friend who owned the property, we somehow got to the subject of ghosts/the supernatural and I asked him if he believed in them or if he had ever seen one. His response was yes; his dead mother had appeared to him a few times over the years and always in the kitchen. He would be doing something, turn around and she was just there quite often with her back to him doing something. It also appears that when she was alive she was quite controlling and hated him having any visitors over and would often glare at his guests from the kitchen as they were walking up the stairs.

Ive had a few experiences. Went to country estate for a few days. Myself ex and our girls and another lady were in an annexe of the main house. Heard door closing and several footsteps on stone steps. Spoke to lady next day she was In bed before us. Sounded like metal seggs on stone and there was a strange smell of peat burning in the middle of the bed.
Yrs before I woke from a dream soaking in sweat and saw an older lady sitting at bottom of bed looking over ex husband. When I des ribed her it was his gran. I had never met her as she had died before I met him.
Was in my house with bf and he heard a child giggle on staircase. His son and my daughter weren't with us at the time as at their other parents. He heard the giggling twice.
In my previous house my bf and I woke up to my bed being in the middle of the room. It had been pushed/shoved down from a wall to touch TV unit.

I found myself in the middle of a pandemic...

Disquieted1 · 29/04/2020 01:06

I was doing the washing up and looked up at the kitchen window. I saw a kangaroo, no shit, looking straight back at me.
Quite possible if you're Down Under, but not very likely in Cheshire!
At some point I blinked and it disappeared, but I saw it staring at me for 2 or 3 seconds at least.

Clearly some kind of hallucination, my one and only, but a kangaroo? WTF was that all about?

I’ve had 2 weird experiences, one as a child at school aged about 11.
My friends and I, about 3 or 4 of us saw some orange peel type shapes floating in the air, coming down towards our heads, in the playground. We put our hands out to catch them, thinking that they were leaves or flying insects. I think it was sunny, so we may have been squinting because of the brightness. Our hands went through the shapes, which floated down to the concrete floor and disappeared. We all looked at each other saying did you see that too, what the hell was that. We all saw the same thing and 50+ years later I’m still baffled what we saw.

The other incident was a dream after Eric Clapton’s son died in that horrific accident in New York. In my dream I was reading a newspaper about it and the article said that EC had another child, a daughter who he’d be reunited with. When I woke up I told my husband and a close friend about the dream, saying wouldn’t that be a nice thing to come true as the poor man must be going crazy with grief.
Sometime later, I can’t remember exactly how long, I think it was a few months, I opened a newspaper and there was the same article as in my dream. EC discovered he had a daughter and was arranging to meet with her.

This might make more sense to people who use or are just familiar with Tarot cards, but maybe it'll travel further than that, so here goes:

I'm 53. When I was 40 I woke up from a dream one morning and all I could remember was being sat in a chair looking down at my left leg. Just above my knee I had placed two cards, The Devil and the 2 of Swords. I lay in bed for a while thinking about the image. Why those two cards in particular, and what did they mean? (I'd been interested in Tarot for years but was still pretty clueless about interpreting them.)

I had two decks of Tarot cards at the time, sitting on a bookshelf in my bedroom. I decided to unwrap one of the decks from its silk covering and take out those two cards, thinking that looking at them might trigger some insight into the meaning of the dream. I couldn't remember the last time I'd used them but as always had just put them away in whatever random order they had been shuffled in. I flicked through the deck and saw the Devil, and directly underneath it the 2 of Swords. Thought that was a bit of a coincidence but sat looking at them for a couple of minutes and then took down the second deck because they were different designs and I wondered if looking at the same two cards from that deck might shed more light on the dream. Imagine my shock when, leafing through the previously randomly shuffled deck I found the Devil and the 2 of Swords nestled right next to each other in the pack.

That summer I had a breakdown of sorts and had to leave work. The following year, in September, I went on retreat for a week to a house on Iona off the south-west coast of Scotland, near Mull. The venue was geared towards people who were in need of spiritual refreshment and I was definitely looking for that. A few weeks before I arrived there my brother and sister-in-law got married in Cyprus. I was broke and couldn't afford to go, so as their wedding present I offered to dog-sit for the week they were away. One night I dreamed I was standing at the back door of a house in the countryside. Looking down the garden I saw a large bird land a few feet away from me. It was beautiful, with golden feathers, and I realised it was a golden eagle. When I woke up I wrote the dream down.

Then, weeks later while I was staying on Iona, I got up one morning and went out into the back garden for a cigarette. It was a really beautiful, fresh morning, and the sheep in the field right next to the garden were looking at me over the stone wall. So cute, the whole scene felt idyllic and was really cheering me up. I looked over their little woolly heads, across the field to where the sea was lapping at the beach in the morning sunlight. Just at that moment a large bird swooped down and landed a few feet away from the sheep. I noticed instantly the golden colour of its feathers and stood there blinking at it in disbelief. It was the bird from my dream.

Later that day I asked the retreat facilitator, who lived on the island for most of the year, if there were any golden eagles on Iona. He said there weren't as a rule, but very occasionally someone would spot one.

A couple of days later I was having some quiet time on my own in the house while the other retreat participants were off doing other things. I looked through the books in a bookcase in the room where I was sitting and saw an old deck of Taot cards, very well-thumbed. I sat down with them, thinking that if anyone wanted a reading that night I could offer one. I didn't shuffle the cards, just casually leafed through them, until I came across the Devil... and directly beneath it, the 2 of Swords.

What were the chances of that?! I had heard that Iona was a magical place, and it is said that it's one of the special locations where "the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest." After my experiences that week I could well believe it.

Shortly before I was due to leave I looked through the books on another bookcase there and was drawn to a book called Inner Visions. Unfortunately I didn't have time to do more than just glance through it, but felt a really strong urge to read it.

To get back to Glasgow for my train to London I had to go through Oban and wait an hour for a coach. To kill time I walked along the High Street for a bit and went into an Oxfam shop for a browse. They had a room at the back devoted to books, and a small section of Mind-Body-Spirit titles on a little cubby shelf.

Guess which book I found there, for a quid..? Shock

A few years ago when I was still living at home , I was on our landing talking to my mum whilst she was getting washing out the basket. We lived in an old house built during WW1, it was a very eerie house before we did it up.
We were chatting away and it was during the summer , very lovely outside and we were planning an afternoon walk. I said ‘where’s Dad I’ll see if he wants a drink before we go out’ and she said ‘he’s in the bedroom I think’ and we peered through the crack in the bedroom door where the hinges are and saw him lying on top of the blankets . Mum said ‘oi you’re not asleep are you?’ And we had no reply . I laughed and said ‘Dad it’s not even midday and you’re already tired!’ And he rolled over slightly and huffed.
I said ‘do you want a tea or coffee before we go out?’ And didn’t get a reply . Mum and I suddenly worried something bad happened to him so we quickly went into the bedroom to find nobody on the bed at all other than an imprint where ‘Dad’ had been. We stared at each other and I looked out the window and my Dad was out in the garden sorting his shed out whilst the dog played and my brother was sat in a chair .
No word of a lie. One of the weirdest fucking things I’ve ever experienced.

I heard someone calling me the other day, no one in the house so I go to the window, there's not a soul in the street. X

I have out of body experiences, frequently. I can control when they happen. It's like something out of a sci fi movie. I swear I'm a very normal person and not very woo at all!!

@Snowcappedmountains

Cannot stand porcelain dolls. When I was a child, there was a ghost story/urban legend circulating about one scratching family members and then piercing them with her nails. Stupid, but terrifying.
