AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

Mind you if I heard munching in the kitchen in the dead of night it would be one of our four cats 🐱

garbagegirl · 29/04/2020 21:47

@DamnYankee That's such a nice story and a comforting idea

Flymetothetoon · 29/04/2020 21:38

OMG I usually have to get up in the night to pee at least twice - tonight I'm leaving the landing light on 😱

Laiste · 29/04/2020 21:23

The Vegetable Muncher.

This one happened to my best and oldest friend. She was no bullshitter. We're late 40's now, this happened to her before we met when she was 8/9.

So she and her younger brother shared a bedroom in a normal 3 bed house. In the dead of night, night after night the two of them would hear dragging footsteps coming up the stairs and onto the landing. They would then come and stop outside their door. Footsteps would eventually go back down stairs. They were frightened. They told their parents. Parents poo poo'd it. Fair enough - not a massively interesting tale ... Untill .... one night the younger brother needed the toilet while this was going on. He was quietly in tears too afraid to go out of the room. J (my friend) said wait till the footsteps leave and she'd check the landing for him. Being very brave for her little brother she waited and crept silently onto the dark landing. Nothing. She crouched and peered down the stairs and could see into the moonlit kitchen.

There she saw the silhouette of a dark figure. Hunched and lumpy in shape it was bending over the wheely vegetable rack her mum had in the kitchen and it had something big in it's hands. While she watched it jerkily bit down hard into whatever it was holding. And then she saw the head slowly turn to look up the stairs towards her. She was terrified and fled back to her room, threw the door shut and leaped into bed. Poor brother had to hold on till the morning.

Neither J or her brother ever came out of their room at night again. The footsteps thing went on until they moved out of that house about a year later. They both remember it clearly to this day.

So i have a couple. I've told them before on MN but not for a few months/years. I'll tell 'em one at a time.

A few years ago DH and i were out in the car with DD4 when she was tiny. I pulled off the road (we live rurally) to pull baby blanket back up. Got out of the car and walked round the back glanced up to see an adult couple in navy waterproofs walking hand in hand towards the car. They were about ... 20 meters away. No gate on the field, just a big wide gap where i'd pulled up. Massive field, ankle high stubble, no visible boundary for miles left, right or to the back and sparse short hedge either side of the gap by the car. Seconds later i sat back down in the drivers seat and looked past DH's face to look at the couple again. They had vanished. There was nowhere they could have gone. DH saw my face and looked where i was looking and said ''.... that couple. They've just gone ...''. He'd seen them too. We kind of sat for a minute. I got out and went to look but it was just a massive empty field full of short stubble. Weird.

I've only managed to get as far as page 5. As far as tazzy73 and Loftus Hall. I googled it. It says it's the most haunted place in Ireland. I'm thoroughly creeped out.

anxietrist · 29/04/2020 20:49

These are brilliant, I wish something spooky happened to me

Lemonyfuckit · 29/04/2020 20:36

Creepy stuff always makes my eyes water. Whether it's true or not the forest story properly makes my eyes water and hairs stand up on the back of me neck.

Mine are not 'scary' but are woo. I was 6 when my little brother was born. When my mum went into hospital I went to stay at a friend's house and was sleeping in her nanny's room. The nanny swears that at 05:15 - the precise time my brother was born - I went from being fast asleep to sitting bolt upright, said 'I've got a baby', and then went fast asleep again.

My dad told us one night he had the most vivid real dream he's ever had before, whereby a river was about to burst its banks and flood a village and he had to warn people - he said the feeling of impending danger and that he just had to warn people was like nothing he'd ever experienced. The next morning on the news on the radio, lo and behold a village had been flooded in the night and people drowned. My dad is completely and utterly non-woo but has this theory that when very strong emotions - fear and danger, or joy in the case of my brother being born for example - are felt sometimes they are somehow 'transmitted' in the atmosphere. As I said, my Dad is not even remotely woo, neither is he religious, but this is his theory. Other family anecdotes like waking up and knowing when the phone call that someone had died was coming etc chime with that.

ladymalfoy I got married at Chillingham. So many spooky goings on reported by the overnight guests. 😁

Ahh I've come to the end of this thread too quickly...must have been really engrossed!

Was saving this for my evening read.

More more more please Grin

A couple from me but the creepiest are the ones I will tell about my mum who doesnt believe in psychics etc but is clearly a bit psychic herself.

My stories:

I was watching 'The Body', an episode of Buffy where she finds her mother dead on the sofa. I was sitting watching the part with the dead body when I looked up and saw a pale face staring in the window. I screamed at the top of my voice and my mum saw the face too. Outside we saw 2 neighbours walking their dogs. They said the dova had gone crazy but they had seen no one.

Story 2 - I wa staying at the New Lanark heritage site in the old renovated houses where the mill workers used to live. The doors swung open by themselves and the tv switched itself on and off repeatedly.

Mum's stories

Story 1 - Tragic story in Glasgow a few years back when a police helicopter fell on top of the Clutha bar and people died. That night my mum & dad got stuck in traffic due to the accident (but they didnt know why). As they sat there my mum repeatedly heard the word 'crushed' over and over again. She saw the news when she got home.

Story 2 - My mum kept asking me and my grandparents if we could hear this strange beeping noise. Nope! 2 weeks later she accompanied me to a hospital appointment. She fainted and was hooked up to a machine. She looked at me and said 'that was it. That's the beeping noise.'

Story 3 - She was at an old battle ground with a friend when she was about 20. She heard cannons and screams but her friend heard nothing.

Actually she has many of these stories but she is an atheist and doesnt believe in the supernatural. Interesting.

De lurked to post this contribution which happened last year. I was driving home one evening bringing my children back from their dad’s- a journey I’d done lots of times before. I was driving north up the M6 expecting the M55 turnoff except it never happened. As I was driving I slowly realised that the surrounding land was an area north of the junction and I was past where the turnoff was. I was behind a truck which after a while pulled into the hard shoulder and I thought “oh, it happened to them too”. I had to keep going until the next exit (which is ages away for anyone who knows that part of the M6, about 10 miles!). I thought I must have been so tired I’d missed the exit so I turned around at Lancaster and went home on the a6 so I could buy sweets from the garage to keep me awake.
Two odd things about this story that freaked me out a bit: 1. If I’d missed the exit I would have had to move out two lanes from the inside lane and I was certain at the time I’d stayed in the inside lane which becomes the slip road, and2. Found out the next day that the day before there had been a multi vehicle pile up on the m55 where several people lost their lives. So, tiredness, or spooky fold in the space time continuum? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 29/04/2020 19:43

@Hoggleludo where was this?

PennyNotSoWise · 29/04/2020 19:20

A couple of years ago, I took a selfie, and afterwards I noticed there was a dirty, large hand at the bottom of the picture. There was very clearly an index finger pointing upwards, but the finger was a little bent, like an elderly persons.

I thought maybe I'd been holding my hand weird and some freaky lighting was making the hand look weird and darker than the rest of the picture, so I tried recreating the selfie with my hand in the same position as that in the picture and it was just impossible.

I don't believe in ghosts and demons and all that, but did shit myself thinking I was being stalked by some witch or something Grin

No idea how the fuck it happened.

CandleNoBra · 29/04/2020 18:59

When I was a teen I was lying on my bed facing the wall. Door shut. Just me in my room (only child so no siblings and no friends in the house at the time).

Suddenly it felt like a chunk of my hair in the back of my head was violently yanked. My head shot back and it hurt like hell. Nobody was in the room. It felt ‘angry’.

I’d have sworn I was dreaming except my scalp was sore for days afterwards and I can still recall the sensation vividly 30 years on.

Gluestick80 · 29/04/2020 18:51

What’s PMK? I keep seeing it all over Mumsnet and it’s very annoying. Confused

englishrosie · 29/04/2020 18:36

Shamelessly placemarking, and I'll tell my Dad's story.

My Dad is very non-woo, doesn't believe in "all that shit" as he calls it.

One night he was sitting on the bed and my mam came upstairs to go into the en-suite and said "I'm going to take my make up off now and get ready for bed" he was like ok and thought no more of it. 10 minutes later my mam came up the stairs. She'd been downstairs the whole time, hadn't came up yet to remove her make up. He was so freaked out.

ladycarlotta · 29/04/2020 18:28

When I was about 18 I had quite a lot of dreams that were completely different from any others. They were more like very richly textured real-time slices of somebody else's life, and I'm sure they came from my own mind but they were just so different and I wonder what was going on in my head to create them.

In these dreams I was a woman with a little boy who was maybe five years old. The dream me lived alone and very isolated in the countryside with him, and loved him so fiercely. Everybody had cut us off, or we'd cut them off, and we had no visitors except for a friend of the little boy's father who would come to check up on us and try to persuade me to let the father see his son. I really didn't want that. I was very afraid of the father - although it was really shameful for me to be separated from him, I absolutely knew I couldn't let him anywhere near my child. Once I dreamed that the father did come, one snowy night when the little boy was asleep. I tried to tell him he couldn't come in, but he didn't care and just brushed past me. The mediator friend came too, but his job was to restrain me while the man went into my son's bedroom to look at him sleeping: I was sobbing and fighting because I didn't even want him to do that. I thought he had no right and I wanted to protect my boy from everything negative in the world, including having this man so much as lay eyes upon him. I felt so helpless that he had trampled me again.

The last dream I had was of hurrying down some stairs, putting on gloves and wearing a heavy dark wool dress that was very smart. In the room at the bottom of the stairs the little boy and a woman friend of mine were waiting for me: she was spritzing perfume into the air from an old-style glass bottle with a squeeze bulb, and they were talking about how nice it smelt. In the dream I was happy and confident. I realised that it was the first time I'd ever left my little boy with somebody else, even for a moment, and I hadn't even thought about it.

I don't know what those dreams were, like I say, but I still think about that woman and kind of wonder if she was a real person. I will never know, but it's amazing what the brain can do.

Hoggleludo · 29/04/2020 18:07

Ooh. I've got one

So I lived in the middle of nowhere. Behind my house was a little tiny lane. Right in the middle of the forest. (Our house was too). Down this lane used to be this old house. It was rotten. Wasn't inhabited. One day I was out. I hadn't been down the lane in ages. I noticed it had been done up. I thought of wow. They've restored it. There was a lady dressed in black. Hanging out black clothes. Went down there a few hours later on our way back and I noticed a woman in white clothes. Hanging white washing out. Which I thought was strange. Lady with the black was old. Lady with the white was young

Went down a few months later and it was really run down again. Exactly like it was before. Nothing had changed.

I wasn't the only one to witness this either. Since then. The same story has appeared and been told in my local area

Oooh.

When I was pregnant with DC2 we lived in a 17th century cottage.
DC1 was three and to get to their bedroom you had to walk through ours, there was no separate corridor.

I was about 30 weeks pg and having very vivid dreams, same as I had with DC1, so didn’t think much about them.
One night I suddenly woke up scared because I’d ‘dreamed’ a dark, menacing male figure had walked through our bedroom and into DC’s bedroom.

About ten seconds later, DC1 came hurtling out of their room towards me screaming ‘Mummy, a nasty man just came in and woke me up!’

Of course, there was no one there. DH slept through it all!

Another dream, same pregnancy. This time I was in the dream, standing by my bedroom window with a man discussing why the thatch was leaking into the room and what we should do to fix it. Very mundane.

Except the cottage roof wasn’t thatched, it was tiled.
A few years later, I was talking to an elderly villager and she recalled how most of the cottages, including ours, used to be thatched.

When I was a little girl I found a really strange necklace in the road outside our house. It was heavy and on a long chain with a gargoyle dragon type figure on a pendant. Not sure what it was made of, but it was a bronze colour. I had an awful feeling about that necklace but felt compelled to move it. A few minutes later I had a really nasty fall off my bike. From then on, Every time I touched it something bad happened. The final time I touched it I fell and smashed my head on the ceramic sink. I finally hid it in the shed and told my family not to go near it. Years later someone found it and decided to throw it in the bin. I was hysterical that the necklace would be ‘angry’ and something bad was going to happen to that person. A few days later they crashed their car Shock

I never found anything out about it, but I am pretty astute and tend to pick up on bad feelings etc. That necklace was something bad, I’m not sure what, but it just really felt bad.

Edinburgh Vaults are fantastic.
One one tour, the third vault that they let you go in is the most oppressive feeling place out. The full atmosphere changes from the previous vaults, and last time I was there, heeled footsteps walked clean past me and the lady next to me, heading towards the back of the vault.
The first time I was there, I heard a sort of mechanical noise, that got louder and louder and louder until I couldn't hear myself think anymore and was crouched on the floor. Turns out that apparently I was the only one that heard it and everyone was looking at me funny 🙄
We ran in to the guide, who was amazing, in a pub the next night, and the stories he had that he doesn't tell on the tours were fascinating.

peppermintcapsules · 29/04/2020 16:38

We rented a house that had an old lady ghost. Of course the bloody landlord didn't mention it. Tried to make the back bedroom, which was lovely by day, into DD1's bedroom. She'd always been a star sleeper. She was about 4. She woke up screaming blue murder in that room and refused to go back in there. We just put her to sleep with us and the next day moved her into the middle bedroom with DD2. No problems after that. The bathroom and a separate WC were next to each other at the end of the corridor, you had to pass that room. I used to hate doing so at night. If you tried to close the door, it'd be open when you went back there. If you tried to leave the big light on, it'd be off when you went back there. Landlord's wife asked, after we moved out, if we'd seen the old lady in there. Thanks for letting me know your fecking house was haunted before renting it to me, not!

after my Dad's funeral, I was in a hotel looking at his phone with my mum, and forwarded a picture of him onto my mums phone. After this, the picture came up when I called her from my phone..she didn't know how to link a photo to a contact at that time!
At that time, I dropped his phone and picked it up, and dropped it another couple of times, it went under the bed.
Months later, I found a copy of the photo of us I had put in his coffin..I only thought one copy existed!

Ooh Tofutikline something very similar happened in my family. Out for a meal as a 15 year old with parents and grandmother. I secretly smoked and after the meal said I wanted to go for a look round the town for a bit. I left the restaurant had a sneaky cigarette and was gone about 20 minutes. When I returned to the restaurant they commented on the fact that I had nipped back in to go to the toilets. Apparently I had walked right past them, used the loo and went out again 😳
