AIBU to ask about the creepiest thing that has ever happened to you that you cannot explain?

I realise threads like these have probably been done to death but I am super bored and struggling to find anything to watch/read.

In April 2001 we went to New York for the first time. We did all the touristy things. On the first day we went to the viewing gallery at the top of the Twin Towers and stayed till dusk to take photos. I was so overwhelmed with the view and just took picture after picture.

When we got home we took the films to be developed. The pics from the first film which was all used taking the pics Of and from the Twin Towers came out completely black. Every one. The rest of the films from the remainder of the holiday we’re fine. We didn’t think anything of it at the time other than it was such a shame as the Towers were so impressive and the views from the viewing gallery stunning, that we had no pics to remind us. After the Towers were attacked on 9/11 it felt spooky and portentous somehow that all our photos were black. I know it must have been a faulty film but even so it made me feel uneasy.

I worked in a garden centre that had been built round the original house, which was Georgian but not like big massive stately home. Everyone kept telling me that Mr T, who was the original owner, was still around. I didn't believe it. But of course, one evening, left alone to lock up the house, I saw Mr T alright. He was by a window so I told him it was closing time and customers had to leave, he turned round to face me and vanished. And he looked like a normal person, just dressed a bit funny.

Oh and there was one room in particular that one of our 'regulars' always stayed in - she even had artwork f her name on the wall lol. She was the most amazing and special little lady you could ever meet and I spent many a night in there with her rubbing her back and comforting her. Sadly she passed away way too young.

For weeks after she passed, the shower would just randomly come on in hmthat room or the call button would activate. Event, myself and one of the HCAs went in one night and just said 'look x we know it's you, you've had your fun but you need to stop now' and it did. Just like that.

I never would take my night time breaks in that room again though

I used to be a Paediatric Nurse, there are a couple of bizarre experiences I had in the ward.

I was once looking after a child on a night shift 1-to-1 in the High Dependancy Unit (it's wasnt a unit it was one larger, better equipped room). It was early hours of the morning, nothing too exciting happening when the doors to the outside play area suddenly flung wide open. Now this had happened a few times previously when the doors were old wooden framed with an old dodgy lock, but they'd recently been replaced with nice new UPVC doors and fancy locks etc.

Try explaining that to a patient and parent!

WillowKnicks · 30/04/2020 21:32

I've told this before on here & it's a few years ago.

Our house has a couple of fields that back onto other fields & a wood, so pretty rural. We have dogs who were on a raw diet at the time, so there were a lot of bones on the lawn outside, that we used to call The Graveyard.

One night, my DH, who is the least fanciful person ever, woke up (summer &: windows open) to hear something crunching on the bones. He looked outside to see a very large, black animal with a long curled tail eating the bones.

He came downstairs to get the big camera & took a photo. The flash disturbed it but he did get a photo of the back of it & it's very distinctive tail!

DH came back to bed & in his words "the bugger came back", he could hear it crunching again.

I grilled him to what he honestly thought & grudgingly said thought it was a panther/big cat!

Whatever it was, it never came back & we never heard of anything else in the area.

@Woobeedoo
I lived in a Warner flat in Walthamstow and had to leave after 6 months as the place was horrendous. The scariest place I've ever lived. So many horrible things happened there. Still gives me the shudders now.

AliBear90 · 30/04/2020 21:14

@tazzy73 no idea why, and I’ve never been to the place. But your story literally made my hairs stand up on end and gave me shivers. None of the others have done that yet to me. Glad you all got out safe x

RingPiece · 30/04/2020 21:05

I've also experienced strange lapses in time and inexplicable recognition and knowledge of strangers. It's been suggested it could be neurological but I'm not so sure. My mother and I have both experienced strange things throughout our lives.

RingPiece · 30/04/2020 21:01

When I was around 9 or 10, I remember waking up night after night and seeing a pair of slanted red eyes about the size of ladels staring at me glowing in the dark. They'd be there for a few seconds before disappearing and I'd go back to sleep. I wasn't scared. This would go on for around a week and then stop for a while before reappearing again. Over the course of a year I probably saw 'the eyes' around six or seven times.

The weird thing was that I would draw them in my books, inside the front covers and around the edges of the pages, but only during the times that I was seeing them. When they weren't appearing, when I wasn't seeing them, I never gave them a second thought.

I recently gave myself shivers when I was flicking though an old Milly Molly Mandy paper back and was met with countless drawings of 'the eyes' staring back at me again from the pages!!

When my DS was born, he would sleep in the bed with (ex)DH and I. One night in particular I decided to let him sleep in the Moses basket next to our bed. He clearly wasn't happy and cried for a while, his DF and I lay in bed for a few minutes hoping DS would fall asleep. All of a sudden he gave a loud cry and I heard a woman's voice say in a soothing voice, "shhh", and then something like "there, there,". Then there was silence. He was fast asleep.

DH asked, "did you hear that?"
"Yes.." I replied.
"Eh, what did you hear?"

We both agreed that we had heard a woman's voice. It definitely didn't come from our DS, as he was only about 3 weeks old. It totally freaked me out. We were living in Singapore where it is common to have a live-in maid/nanny. We didn't have one, but I wouldn't be surprised if a maid had died in that apartment.

Laiste · 30/04/2020 20:47

@AliceTeale - ''The pile of toys in the school''.

That's me i think!

I'll re tell it. It's the honest complete truth. I've never got my head round it. I'll set the scene:

Sunny summer afternoon, village primary school, apx 5pm. I'm a TA, i've been checking classrooms making sure they're ready for the next day before i leave. The old caretaker will go round and lock up in a few mins. I'm in the open plan 'new' block (built late 80s). It's 4 classrooms in a continuous line, A, B, C, D attached to the much older main building by a short connecting walkway which starts between B and C. Makes a T shape. Lots of big windows. Sunlight streaming in.

So - it's just me in the block. All doors are pinned open so it's a long sunny walk. I've walked briskly (humming happily) from class D through C and am going through B to get to A where i've left my mobile. As i pass through B i glance to my right and see a mess of stuff under the wooden coat rack next to the carpet area of class B. I sigh and think 'look at that lot! I'll come in here first things and get down and pull it all out'. It was a couple of lunch boxes. A couple of cardboard models the kids had made. Ruler, and the obligatory assorted building blocks ect.

So i march into class A and grab my phone off the desk and go striding back through B. Glancing to my left now (i'm going the other way) at the carpet area ... in the middle of it were all the bits from under the coat rack!! In a tower. Neatly and perfectly balanced. In the space of about 10 or 15 seconds and in perfect silence Shock

So that's about it. It's still beautifully sunny. I stop dead and look at it. And i LAUGH a little bit. I laugh at it. I know there's no one around. My over riding feeling was that it had been done for me specifically by something else. I walk on and go home as usual (i lived opposite the gates). And after a while i started to feel quite sick and shaken up.

I've only told 3 or 4 people in real life about it.

Katyy · 30/04/2020 20:43

This ones not scary just strange. I was I a gift shop choosing two ornaments, they both had removable names on them, I choose my sons name, looked for his then girlfriends name there wasn’t one, so I just choose a random name. Guess who he married.

Friedmushroom · 30/04/2020 20:42

I have found my people Grin!

When I was in my early 20’s I used to work in a very old pub in a very historic town. Plenty of strange goings on, things would fly off the back of the bar as if they’d been thrown, tables knocked over and I remember the landlord once coming up from the cellar absolutely shitting himself having seen someone down there with him (only him and me on shift and definitely not me, access from behind the bar).

The pub was made of two rooms and the bar ran between connecting the two. The back room had an old settle in, with a curtain rail across the front of it, and the story was that long ago, ladies of a certain occupation would sit in it touting their wares and when they got a customer the curtain would be drawn for privacy. Apparently there had been a dispute over payment and a murder had taken place. The settle was reputed to be haunted by these ladies but no one I spoke to had actually experienced anything so I just thought it was one of those things.

When the managers went on holiday I would stay on site and run the place on my own. I was setting up pre-opening one morning - pub all locked up - and from the back room, clear as day, there was the sound of laughing. A group of ladies, laughing. It was so real that it took me a moment to realise what time it was and I was the only person in the place. That was the first time I experienced anything in that place but not the last.

The burglar alarm would often, inexplicably, go off in the middle of the night. Standard procedure would be to go down from the bedrooms on the third floor to the office on the second, review the CCTV cameras and reset alarm.

One night, when I was looking after the place, I was abruptly awoken by the alarm. I got out of bed, walked down to the office and looked over the cameras. All of a sudden a chill came over me and a few moments later I felt something running down my leg. I looked down and there was a long, straight cut down my thigh, almost like someone had scratched me with their nail, and blood was running down my leg. I assumed I’d cut myself in bed so after cleaning myself up and resetting the alarm I retraced my steps to clean up. There was no sign of blood anywhere. Years later I recounted the story to the new landlord over a late night pint (or two!). The following day when I arrived on shift he came to see me. The alarm had gone off the night before and lo and behold there was a long, straight, scratch down his arm Shock!

LostSapphire · 30/04/2020 20:31

NC as I've told people in real life!

For many years, I had a recurrent nightmare about being held down and my eyeball being pressed down into, as if it was going to burst. Not very pleasant. It happened more and more frequently and I couldn't work out what it meant.

Until aged 24 I got fed up with glasses and contacts, and decided to get laser eye surgery. For those who haven't had Lasik, it involves (or involved, 10 years ago) a machine being pressed very firmly down onto the eyeball. Exactly the same sensation as in my dream. The Lasik was successful, and - amazingly - I never had that nightmare again. I guess it must have been some sort of sensory premonition, and once it came true, it stopped.

Only now I have a recurrent dream of falling down the stairs and my broken body draped over the banister Sad

otterbaby · 30/04/2020 20:11

I worked for years in a building that was built in the 1700's, started as a stately home but over the years was a military hospital and tuberculosis hospital. Had a few ghostly encounters there. The strangest one was on an evening where I stayed at work late to finish some bits, so I was alone in the office. I kept hearing the sound of someone sitting down in an office chair (you know, like that 'squeak' and the sound of air compressing as the springs settle). I heard it several times over about 30 mins and finally was fed up. I went out into the main office bit where there were about 6 separate desks. Waited for the sound to happen again and managed to follow my ears and track it to one chair in particular. I went and stood directly behind it and said something out loud, can't quite remember but something like "well, I know you're here!" Seconds later, I watched the chair physically bob down, the same way it would as if someone plopped themselves down on it, with the same squeak sound. Flew out of that room as fast as I could 😂 had to go ask a waiter to accompany me back in to pack my bag up as I was too freaked out to go back in on my own.

Nurgleturtle · 30/04/2020 20:04

i moved home from uni for a few months as i needed a large operation about 6.5 hours, and a month or two recovery time so my brother had taken my room and i had to have his box room till i started again in september xD anyways i always remember him screaming and waking up at night he told mum it was the monsters in his bedroom it eventually stopped when he was about 12, so i moved into the small box room and was in there for about a week and started to feel my bed shaking like kind of vibrating thought i had woken up half asleep and went back to sleep for the rest of the night happened a few times then one night it got quite violent and i jumped out of bed turned the lights on and my bed was actually moving it was shaking so bad stopped after i got my mum to come look obviouslym i kept saying please leave me alone and it would (whatever it was) for a few days upon packing my stuff up to leave again and move into my new house it got so bad i barely slept for about 5-7 days before i left it was so violent. my bed would shake and for the last three days something was growling at me and laughing at me on and off throughout the night safe to say i never went back to that house and finally understand what the monsters were Dx

When I was about 7 or 8 (a very long time ago!), before I had siblings, I had gone to bed as normal. In the morning my mum told me off for going into their bedroom when I should have been asleep. Apparently they heard me walking around in there from the living room below. I had been in bed reading when it was supposed to have happened and there was nobody else upstairs (no pets). It was probably the floorboards settling but it really scared me. Mum refused to believe it wasn't me because they heard it so clearly! I didn't sleep particularly well for quite a while afterwards

Eachpeachpearbum · 30/04/2020 19:49

When I had a job working in a Coronary Care Unit (like ITU for the heart) I was on a night shift, it was about 4am, I was chatting with the nurses at the nurses' station which was like a glass box in the middle of the ward. Everything peaceful, dark, patients asleep and soft beeps from the machines. A man walks in through the main door, we barely look up until we hear the noise of him hitting the floor. As I'm in work mode I rush out and first thing I do is check for a pulse - none. We get the crash trolley, whole team going through the familiar motions, put the defibrillator on, find his rhythm and shock him until he comes back. Only when he's back do we really try and work out who he is, which bed he's come from, which ward so we can get his notes and find his team to hand over. He has no wristband, no ID, in pyjamas not a hospital gown - a bit odd. He came round really quickly and told us he lived in the town the hospital was on the outskirts of and woke up with an overwhelming urge to walk to the hospital so he did. That in itself is eerie but he didn't just walk to the hospital, he walked to the hospital, through the doors, up two flights of stairs, down the corridor and through the doors of basically the best possible place you could have a cardiac arrest in - staff that deal with it all the time, all the equipment right there. His rhythm was the kind where you die quickly unless you get a shock, if it had happened at home he wouldn't have made it. No history of heart problems, no pain, just an irresistible urge to walk. Weirdest thing to happen to me on a night shift.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 30/04/2020 19:43

I have one, people think it is creepy but it really isn't to me. I am going to be as brief as possible as it comes in 2 parts. 2nd part is 20 years later.

When I was a little girl - 3/4ish. I had an imaginary friend. I still remember seeing her. My mum asked me what my imaginary friend was like. I explained she wore pantaloons and was from a very long time ago. Strange but a 4 year old could have overheard that and made it up. I still remember seeing her though.

When anything ever happened bad in my life I would think of this young girl.

The night before I miscarried I dreamt my friend was pushing my baby on a swing and she said, I will keep her with me and look after her. Again, I may have sensed the miscarriage and looked for a comfort subconsciously.

Anyway, many years later, I had just done the sch run, baby in pushchair. Oh it is important to point out I am a naturally very fast walker.
There was a man standing outside a shop. Didn't think anything of anything and was just walking. He started to shout something as I walked past. I ignored. Then he shouted out the name of my imaginary friend. Now this name is not known at all. I actually believe it was just a few sounds merged together.
I stopped and asked him what he said. He said please slow down. I was quite rude to him and told him to do one. His face became desperate. He said 'look, I know you won't believe me but there is a girl following you everywhere you go. She has been with you forever, you used to see her. You have had dreams about her and she is still keeping her promise, all I ask is for you to slow down, she is tired, you are too fast for her'
I asked him to prove what he was saying. He laughed slightly after looking at the empty space to my right and said 'pantaloons'
There was something else but the line he said is too heartbreaking to repeat. But it hit me like a brick. There was no way he knew that, it is one of my deepest, saddest secrets I haven't told a soul!
Caught up in the moment I sobbed. I called my mum. She said out of all 4 of her children's imaginary friends mine was the one who she felt a sense of 'maybe not imaginary'

Do i believe she was a ghost, I don't know, I don't believe in them. Can I explain remembering seeing her... yes the mind is powerful. Can I explain that man and the things he said...not at all.

Chopbob · 30/04/2020 19:38

My old house was a very very creepy place. It was a really old but beautiful ivy covered cottage, built circa 1630s on an old slate mine.
We lived there for around 12 years and had so many weird happenings it's hard to remember them all!
I'll try to keep it to the most freaky...

I had some of my girly friends round for drinks one evening and we got talking about how spooky my house was. I was telling them that on occasion you hear a voice when nobody was there. Long story short we got wasted and ended up trying to make an EVP. Of course we recorded nothing but ended up laughing and challenging the spirit to talk. Big mistake.
One night before dh and I had dc, he was attending a wedding of an old university pal and would be spending the night away. I was sleeping in my bed with our old dog. I was just drifting off to sleep when there was a huge crash sound from the walk in closet. I sat up in bed squinting at the door to the closet but it was too dark so I lay back down. Then the dog started growling and snarling at the closet door and wouldn't stop. I thought there was obviously a logical explanation, like something had fallen in the closet so I started to get up to go take a look. Just as I did a woman's voice- clear as day- said "HE can hear me". I shit myself! I ran to my car outside in my pjs with the dog and rang my dad hysterical 😂

When my GF was still alive, he would come to our house to keep the dog company (and to escape my DGM lol). Our dog at the time was a small puppy so my GF was taking photographs of him. When he had them developed (it was a while ago no digital cameras then!) there was an unknown older woman just going off shot in one of the photos. She had grey hair and was wearing a dark coloured ling dress. My gf swears nobody else was there.

We also had numerous complaints from neighbours about somebody in our house playing a piano at all hours. Neither dh or I play piano, nor do we have a piano. Most of the alleged times we were both at work.

Two of my oldest friends from university came to stay with for a few nights (again pre dc).
The first night we were sat in the living room drinking when my friend C became really upset. She had seen a woman walk past my kitchen door and knew there was nobody there. She had a long dark dress on and grey hair. We both laughed at her mockingly. The morning after she still seemed out of sorts and left fairly early. My second friend S stayed another night, but that evening she became hysterical after trying to run a bath. She put the plug in and turned the taps on then went to her bedroom to grab a towel...when she returned the plug was out and the taps off. She thought nothing of it, put the plug back and put the taps back on and popped out of the room again. When she returned the taps were off and the plug was in the middle of the floor. She made me sit outside the bathroom while she had a bath and again left pretty sharp the next morning.

Thankfully I never saw anything in the house, but I heard voices on many occasions, items moved on their own, had problems with electrical appliances, water came on and off. Lots of people refused to stay the night. Whatever it was didnt feel bad though it was always a friendly home.

Dh and I did some research at the library and learned that the previous elderly owner had died in the house. Her fiance when she was young also died in our living room from TB. He played the organ for the local church.
The slate mine was also the scene of a local tragedy in the 1800 when the mine collapsed and killed many men.

I'm not sure how we lived there some long honestly! Our new house is a new build and is very quiet and boring

roxanne119 · 30/04/2020 19:27

I was in hospital for along time with my second ds . I had all kind of complications early contractions , waters broke you name it. My poor dh had to carry on working and looking after my older ds . I was about 30 weeks along in my pregnancy and doing fairly well and I had got to know a few of the staff as I had been on the ward for about 8 weeks at the time . It was a quiet night and I couldn’t settle and I had walked up to the nurses station and there was a nurse on that I hadn’t met before . We passed the time of day she was working on a needle point I ask to see it and it was the most beautiful pair of angel hands delivery/ holding a baby . After that night I never saw that nurse again although I ask after her and I had like an inner piece knowing I would be ok . That ds is 27 and apart from having the cord wrapped round his neck on delivery it was uneventful . I kinda think it was a guardian angel . 😇

24 yrs ago (I was 15) I was turning my horse out in to a very dark field at the livery yard. It was about 8pm in November, no one else there. In the middle of the countryside and the field my horse was kept in was surrounded by other fields. It was as isolated as you can get. Just as I enter her field I start to hear a soft whirring noise. Not so much an engine sound but almost movement of air, like a fan. It gets louder but not deafening. I look to the sky wondering if it was a plane and suddenly from my right hand side, at the level of the top of the oak trees I see a round, metallic object in the sky. Not particularly huge. It was spinning. It had a band around the middle with blue lights. It moved very quickly. It travelled left then hovered way above me and to my left (long enough for me to get a good look) and then flew off upwards and to the left (diagonally IYSWIM).
The noise went immediately and it was gone.
This was a long time before the widespread use of drones (circa 1995) and the only nearby house was the owner of the livery yard who was an elderly lady in her 80’s. I would imagine for it to have been controlled remotely then that person would have had to be close by and as mentioned the field was completely surrounded by acres and acres of other grazing.
I cannot explain it and to this day I have no idea what I saw.

jackie2669 · 30/04/2020 19:00

Homestayer.....how rude of you.

mel71 · 30/04/2020 18:51

In a property, I lived in when my children were small. The day I moved in the person who helped me move did a double-take as I walked up the stairs - I asked what was wrong and he said nothing - thought I saw someone come up the stairs behind you.
There was an odd feeling in the property - as if you were being watched. Taps and tv turned themselves on a few times.
Then one day my youngest who was three at the time was leaning on the sofa arm talking to me. He suddenly stopped talking and said, "Where has she gone?" I said, "Who?" He said, "The lady. She was standing there looking at me." I said, "Looking at you?" He said, "and you." He then gave me a description of what she looked like and what she was wearing and went from room to room looking for her.
We got over that one, but a few months later I put him to bed, and he didn't want to go to bed. He was crying, and I was ignoring said crying. He suddenly shot into the room and said, "Someone has just whispered it's okay in my ear, "
The building I lived in was a large old Georgian building divided into flats. I had the basement and ground floor. I saw the upstairs neighbour the next day and said I think there is something in this building. Her response, "I'm glad you said that. Someone sat on the end of my bed the other night." We moved asap.
