in being annoyed that six couples were late to my son's christening service?

It was very embarrassing as his baptism was actually part of an ordinary holy communion service, not a special one. They all came in at different times, disturbing the whole place as the church is small with a very loudly creaking door.

Surely it is good manners to arrive on time? About a third of those invited were late, when it all started I thought they had not bothered to come. As things progressed I just sat rigid with mortification. Only one couple got lost, the rest just didn't get their act together.

Annoyingly some habitually late people seem to think its abit endearing in a "oops silly little me Im just so bohemian and relaxed" way. Grrr.

People were late for our wedding and still remember who they were tho it was 3 years ago now.

newgirl · 17/07/2007 15:30

i dont think the late people are the jolliest - the ones i can think of are usually the most dreary - they arrive and bore you with details of the m25 or little jonny's nappy

helenhismadwife · 17/07/2007 11:40

very rude very embarassing for you and disrespectful

hope you managed to enjoy the day though

iesha · 17/07/2007 08:17

I really really really hate lateness and try to never be late myself, so No, YANBU.

My DH's best man was late for our wedding (turning up at the same time as me) And we have never let him forget it. Tho in a LOL way of course.

I was an hour early for my nieces christening, in fact most of the fam turned up B4 my bro, SIL and neice.

ANd even with the car dying on the way to bro wedding we still wasn't late, lucky really as we turned up in a haze of smoke and such an amazin noise that there is no way we could have sneeked in. LOL

OrmIrian · 17/07/2007 08:11

edam - I wish the late people I knew worked as hard as you to be on time . I have one friend who is always habitually late - hours late! If she says she'll be here about 12, DH and I know that it will be about 1 before we get a phone call telling us she'll be late. In fact I dread getting a call telling us she's coming as it means hours waiting around. She's a lovely women in so many ways but this drives me to distraction - it tells me that our doesn;t matter to her at all. She's had a series of successful businesses and I assume punctuality is important for that so I know she can do it when she thinks it's important. Last year she announced that she was taking us all out for lunch - cue excitement from kids - she finally turned up at 6pm. So we didn't get home until nearly 10 - on a Sunday.

Ahhh rant over...I'm afraid it's one of those things that makes me really cross .

stressteddy · 16/07/2007 19:41

Did you know that generally being on time/late is part of your innate personality?
(Very loosely speaking)

edam · 16/07/2007 19:32

YANBU, they are very rude. Speaking as a habitually late person myself.

I have to work VERY VERY hard to be on time for things as it just goes against every natural instinct but I'd make bloody sure I was on time for a Christening, wedding or funeral.

Actually, I was late for a funeral once, but that was down to a flat tyre on the motorway so really not my fault!

dazedorconfused · 16/07/2007 19:29

YANBU - but did see a funny card just today with the line 'late people are so much jollier than those waiting for us'

newgirl · 16/07/2007 19:24

i hate lateness too - even on playdates!! i hate standing in stupid park for even 5 minutes too long - boring boring boring - it says to me - my time is sooo much more important than your time

late for a church is shockingly rude

Blu · 16/07/2007 14:00

no, no, you can't be checking for texts and reading them during your child's chrstening ...anyway - don't fret - no-one is having a go at you - esp with that much on your plate...good grief...

constancereader · 16/07/2007 14:00

You poor thing. Will go check thread now.

OP posts:
sauce · 16/07/2007 13:57

No, as I mentioned earlier I plan to leave up to 2hrs earlier for anything crucial. As for mobile phone, there's always text mssgs.

Blu · 16/07/2007 13:56

x-posted Sauce!
Here, have some re-assurance.
e coli sounds bloody awful - will check thread.

Blu · 16/07/2007 13:54

SAuce - but would you be calm and casual about being late for Christening?

I am not always totally punctual, and often arrive in a last minute fluster. But I would be 5 mins early for a Christening or any other 'ceremonial' occasion or something with a definite start time...cinema, theatre, school event, meeting etc.

I suppose constancereader wouldn't have had her mobile on during the service totake messages from latecomers!

sauce · 16/07/2007 13:53

My dd is in hospital (thread e.coli, etc). I'm supposed to be resting or at least doing laundry, cooking dinner for clueless dh, eating lunch, whatever but I've come snivelling to MN for some reassurance...

constancereader · 16/07/2007 13:50

Sauce, late for playdates is OK! Last post did sound smug, but believe me there are plenty of other things I do which are not so great. Too many to list, I'd be here all day.

Are you having a stressful day?

OP posts:
multitasker · 16/07/2007 13:48

Its just plain rude, and as someone has said - it shows a lack of respect for all involved and the importance of the actual ceremony. Rude rude rude.

sauce · 16/07/2007 13:45

oh all right, you perfect Stepford Wives! Hate me for being chronically late but I always have the best intentions. It's usually for playdates or something harmless & only by 5-10 mins. And I always ring up if I know I'm not on time, even a few mins late.

Listen to me, justifying myself like crazy! Not a good day for me to join in chat. Too upset but I just wanted some comfort!

constancereader · 16/07/2007 13:44

We made the godparents stay with us the night before so that there was no chance of a late arrival from them.

I do have a thing about lateness, I am usually five minutes early for things.

hufflebranpuff · 16/07/2007 13:42

Perhaps each couple contains at least one person like my dh. Whenever he plans a trip that he's made before he thinks back to the quickest time he's ever made the trip and allows exactly that amount of time.

constancereader · 16/07/2007 13:42

There were no parking problems as the church has massive car park. All but one of those who were late live locally and know where the church is. The only one who apologised was the one who came from some distance away.

There is a family service at our church which we normally attend, but our dates couldn't fit, so it was the holy communion one instead.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 16/07/2007 13:40

I never understand why people are late without good reason such as traffic problems etc?! Especially when they say 'oh well that's just me, I'm always late', the rest of us manage to be on time by organising ourselves properly

YANBU my DD's godfather was late to her christening - I was livid.

mozhe · 16/07/2007 13:39

Rude.....I am never late....and that is with 5,( 6 as of 2 weeks ago....but he hasn't been to any christenings yet...),children.
Imo folk should be on time...check out route beforehand...or invest in sat nav.

HedTwigg · 16/07/2007 13:38

oh definitely not a friend Blu .. can't stand people who are regularly late ..I don't think any shrug of the shoulders, self-deprecating 'what am I like?' grin is excuse enough .. they need to get a farkin' grip and appreciate that their actions are pathetic

islandofsodor · 16/07/2007 13:38

Perhaps they got lost/something happened just before they were due to leave/got stucj in traffic, couldn;t find anywhere to park. Any number of things really.

YABU imo.
Then again at our local church there are comings and goings all the time as it is very child friendly with lots of families taking little ones in and out throughout the service.

What was unreasonable was when the vicar fogot to turn up to my neice's christening.
