To ask the truth about your drug use?

This may seem a silly question but since it’s an anonymous forum I’ll ask anyway. I’ve NC.

If you ever experimented or used drugs, what did you use and what made you choose that drug? I want to have an open conversation with my teenage child about why people may use certain drugs and what situations they will come up in but I don’t have a huge amount of experience on it. I know the internet has information but would like some realistic stories from the ladies of MN.

I have taken weed, mdma, speed and a lot of cocaine although none for years and years

The one drug I wish I could give up and that has caused more harm because of its acceptability is alcohol

IamPickleRick · 21/02/2019 18:27

I’ve never even tried smoking either, despite hanging around with the smokers at school. I was probably the token geek friend 😂

Eminybob · 21/02/2019 18:25

I smoked weed in my mid teens to late teens but never really enjoyed it. All my friends were doing it so I just went along with it. As soon as I admitted to myself that it made me feel like shit - paranoid mainly - I stopped.

In my early 20’s I did ecstasy most weekends and a bit of coke occasionally. I did enjoy the e and felt that I needed to do it in order to have a good night out but reflectively, I realised it was mental escape from the abusive relationship I was in. As soon as I was able to physically escape I stopped the drugs. I haven’t taken anything since my mid 20’s (now late 30’s) but I do like a drink.

IamPickleRick · 21/02/2019 18:25

Never taken anything in my life. I have epilepsy and I have psychic seizures (I stay conscious and feel either absolute euphoria or complete dread, there’s no inbetween, as well as dissociation a lot like the pethidine feeling) and I am terrified of setting one off or making it worse by fucking up my brain.

I had morphine for my csections and had beetle hallucinations.

PalmTree101 · 21/02/2019 18:16

@easyandy101 Tbahs cool! I don’t remember being able to buy ‘pot poroui’ shrooms but it was so easy to buy fresh I guess we didn’t need to.

One of the saddest days was the shroom legislation changing.

Small numbers of people taking shrooms and loving the world, their friends and the woods - BAN THE HIPPIE DRUG

Large numbers of people drinking to excess every weekend and causing trouble - EXTEND THE LICENSING HOURS

makes total sense Hmm

PalmTree101 · 21/02/2019 18:13

@ILoveBray never any drugs? Never caffeine or alcohol? Two common drugs that most people think are fab.

ASauvignonADay · 21/02/2019 18:00

@Wedgiecar58

Eve now, in my group (early 30s), it's commonplace to get some cock in for a birthday party/NYE,
Great typo! 😂😂

PalmTree101 · 21/02/2019 17:54

@PooleySpooley yeah they do taste disgusting, you have to hold your nose whilst you munch! 😂

ButtMuncher · 21/02/2019 17:35

Smoked from around the age of 16 (now 34)
Weed occasionally 18-20
Weed again occasionally 26-29
Coke twice at 20, then again at 26
MDMA a few times aged 25.

I won't touch anything stronger than weed, and it's been over 3 years since I last had any. No desire to since having DS.

Wedgiecar58 · 21/02/2019 16:54

Smoked weed at university and after, while working full time. Smoked pretty heavily, most evenings. Found it habitually addictive (couldnt chill or sleep without it) and have since stopped.

Taken coke regularly for years, maybe 10 of so, on average once or twice a month with periods of using it weekly. Always with friends, at parties, never in a bad place or when on my own. At the time, didn't think this was addicting but looking back we ALWAYS had it for parties/nights out. If I didn't have my own, it was easy enough to get some from friends/contacts.

Pills/MDNA - occasionally, for big nights or festivals. Great times, but horrible comedowns, awfully emotional for days after. Some of my fondest memories though - just feeling so happy, carefree and full of love for my friends and appreciation for the environment around me.

I don't regret any of my choices. I had fun and was never reckless. When pills were passed round at a party, I would stash mine until an hour or so after everyone else had taken theirs, just to see if they could be dodgy. Then when I would take it, I would bite it into quarters and take 1/4 each couple of hours, so 1 pill would last me til the early hours of the party.

Eve now, in my group (early 30s), it's commonplace to get some cock in for a birthday party/NYE, and we're all high-achieving professionals in full-time work.

Your son will probably be offered drugs in his teens/early 20s when his peers are exploring. If you're honest with him about the associated risks, he might make decisions based on logic (like I did with rationing my 1 pill) rather than peer pressure. But don't think you'll be able to scaremonger or convince him out of ever trying them. I never thought I would take drugs. I grew up with the DRUGS ARE BAD mentality, this applied to all drugs. Then I went to uni and it seemed everyone was smoking weed, my friends from home started doing coke (they all worked full time) so it seemed OK for me to do it too. That eventually led to holidays raving in Ibiza high on ecstasy. It's interesting how you become so softened to it all over time, it doesnt seem as scary when you find out more about it and all your friends are doing it.

I often wonder if any of my colleagues or family would ever suspect me for the secrets I have.

I'd like to add I am pregnant now and wouldn't dream of taking anything. Also plan to happily leave this kind of stuff in my pre-pregancy/parenthood life.

stevie69 · 21/02/2019 16:24

Never have. Haven't felt the need thus far but but .... who the fuck knows what life my throw at you? Never say never, I guess.

Saracen · 21/02/2019 16:24

I used cannabis half a dozen times. The fact that most of my friends used it meant it felt safe and normal to me. There was no peer pressure (there were people among us who didn't use it, and everyone respected their choice), but it was readily available. The only reason I stopped was because I didn't get on with it - no pleasant effects and some paranoia.

Alcohol was similar, except I did enjoy the effects and continued to use it. I don't use it often now because I don't feel it makes a positive contribution to my life as it once did, so I just don't bother.

Never tried any other recreational drugs, because they were less available.

MaggieAndHopey · 21/02/2019 16:24

I used to buy fresh mushrooms online - there was a site called Red Eyed Frog that sold them. We'd blend them into (disgusting) smoothies and go out for a walk in the woods. Sad day when the government put a stop to that.

easyandy101 · 21/02/2019 16:20

You could even buy dried mushrooms "legally" for a while, as long as they weren't prepared for obvious human consumption, so not uncommon to buy them sewn into a little cloth bag as a pot pourri

SkaterGrrrrl · 21/02/2019 16:17

Fresh mushrooms were indeed legally available in the early Noughties. One memorable afternoon we bought them in Camden then tripped in Regents Park for hours. About 2003. Think we solved the meaning of life that day. No, I don't remember.

ILoveBray · 21/02/2019 15:33

I think I'm probably in the minority here, but I have never taken any kind of drug (even weed) and never would. Cigarettes either.

pumpastrotter · 21/02/2019 15:25

I started in my late teens, not sure why, I think boredom and it was just there, I come from a sleepy, naice town but there is a massive drug problem.. Coke, Mkat, ket, pills, MDMA, 2CP, shrooms...the usual party types. Weed made me very sick so I barely touched it. I was never actually that keen on any of it though, it rarely had the desired effect and I usually fell asleep, that being said in honesty I have some fun memories. I never got into trouble/became dependent but I know people who did/have, Exdp (DS dad) has melted his brain and it has caused him a lot of MH issues; most of the people he grew up and partied with are either on harder drugs, dead (suicide) or to be frank, losers. People who have never grown up and sit at home doing nothing whilst eating pills or can't even go to the pub without needing a pick up. Luckily for me (and DS) I hadn't done anything in the run up to me getting pregnant or before I found out, I haven't done it since (except the random toke drunk me thinks is a good idea). I don't miss it, I get offered and have no problem turning it down. I agree once in a while is fine, but I think it's a bit sad when I see people I used to party with every weekend still doing the exact same thing they were doing 10 years ago wasting money and having to 'adult' on a come down.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 21/02/2019 14:26

I've smoked a couple of times but that's about it. (And it did nothing for me apart from make me feel a bit light headed.)

I wouldn't even have known where to get a hold of drugs. I've clearly lived a sheltered life!

Daisychainsandglitter · 21/02/2019 14:19

Have tried speed when I was younger on a few occasions. Liked it but hated not being able to sleep for a couple of days afterwards.
Only did mushrooms once but loved it. I've never giggled so much.
Like a PP I was scared of pills because of the Leah Betts story when I was growing up. An acquaintance of mine also died aged 14 from pills so never touched them.
I was around weed and draw a lot in my late teens almost everyone I knew was doing it regularly but I could never get on with it. It made me sick and stare at a wall for ages. Alcohol definitely was/is my drug of choice.
Haven't touched any drugs for about 15 years now but I'm glad I experienced it.

MaryMcCarthy · 21/02/2019 14:14

I've had some of the most profound, insightful, life-affirming experiences on LSD, mushrooms and MDMA (not necessarily together)... they're experiences that have opened my eyes to what’s important in life and have informed my attitudes, decisions and increased self confidence long after the drug has worn off.

It's best to teach your kids about the good as well as bad of drugs, emphasising the need for informed decisions, because one thing's for sure if your child comes across drugs, socially or whatever, and their experience doesn't match the exaggerated horror stories you've told them, then their trust in you is going to be dented.

easyandy101 · 21/02/2019 13:57

Nah pills these days are back to proper standards ime

crappynamechange · 21/02/2019 13:56

I forgot that I also took MDMA every few weeks or so throughout uni and loved it. Great fun, but the comedown didn't work for me when I had to get up for work! So I stopped that and haven't touched it in 20 years. I would be too scared to do it now as I'd have no idea what was in the damn stuff - probably not MDMA.

easyandy101 · 21/02/2019 13:56

no point doing it if it wasn't fun.

Wish more people were like you!

easyandy101 · 21/02/2019 13:54

Tbf I was referring to people using heroin, cocaine and crack etc and proporting to being able to sustain “recreational” use.

You're right it is rare but it does happen

I've done the above quite a few times, they generally don't interest me but most things have their time and place

I've taken alot of drugs over the course of 26 years (never tried ice) and wouldn't say that my use has ever been problematic, although not entirely without consequence either

RedForShort · 21/02/2019 13:54

Young in the 90s. In my head certain drugs went with certain types of music likes. I had the perception ecstasy was a ravers' drug. I wasn't a raver so didn't take it solely for that reason. (There's teenage logic there somewhere. Hidden deep.) My 'indie/grunge' peers took acid and speed, and smokes lots of pot. I thought cocaine was for the wealthy!!! I wasn't particularly into drugs as might be obvious!! (Too cautious and scared - an attitude i applied to just about everthing except alcohol for some reason.)

Ecstasy has apparently become trendy again. Im not sure if buying drugs is cheaper these days. But I'm guessing with the dark web it's easier? Especially for youngsters who might not otherwise know where to or who to go to?
