to think that £150 is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a toaster

and even more unreasonable to have actually considered doing so (especially as we are a bit boracic just now).

I mean, is it REALLY going to make better toast than the £19.99 jobby from argos, or do i just want it to look pretty (very 50's retro) But seriously, does it make a difference? I remember my mother giving us quite an expensive toaster ages ago and it made shite toast, although it wasnt £150.

We have been making toast on the grill for years now because of the shite toaster but now i want a toaster and cant decide on £9.99 or saving up for an all singing all dancing toaster in primrose yellow and shiny chrome.

(then you need to make it on the hot plate and buy a special aga toasting rack which costs a ridiculous £17.50 or something similar)

Minty, we have the 1989 Argos model. Wedding present. I've dropped it at least twice but it still toasts to, well, pretty much perfection.

our toaster was bought in argos in um..... 1994 for £7.99 and is still going strong despite near-constant use. I keep waiting for it to break so I can go and buy a fancy one, but it won't. It is a thing of wonder.

When I say "fancy one" I mean spending maybe £40. I mean, its just toast. And dualits are crap

i have a dualit toaster (wedding pressie, FAB)
also had the UPGRADED version of that Siemens kettle (£130!) and it broke
but i am a mug.

but you know, they are out on the worktop, they NEED TO LOOK GOOD....

i also agree but in my heart i know that i would still but the thing that looked the nicest, even if i knew it would break down in six months! tragic really, it is an affliction!

Actually I could probably post a list of things that many would feel we had spent 'daft' money on but bottom line is most of these items have long outlasted cheaper versions we have had in the past and are therefore more environmentally friendly so indirectly giving to a good cause.

I haven't read all the messages, but would just like to say that we bought a Dualit because we thought it would be cheaper in the long run. This was after I broke 4 cheap toasters by pushing the spring mechanism down too hard when I had a hangover and was desperate for toast and marmite (on 4 separate occasions, not all at once). The Dualit is still going strong after 11 years of daily use.

I know someone who's recently bought a toaster because it was designed by Porsche. It was in the price bracket you describe, Lucy.

thanks SM, that does sound like a good idea although i never wear make up. Am going to pluck up the courage to go to the hair dressers though and spend too much money on my hair.

I have a Dualit toaster and I think it's fab! I did have a Dualit kettle (bought at the same time) and it was rubbish, was binned a couple of years ago.

The man and I were equally vulgar, I donlt think dualits are vulgar but it is a daft amount of money to spend on cooked bread.
