to feel uneasy about my son reading Enid Blyton books

My son wants me to read him a book called the "Wishing Chair", I have read two chapters of it and it has a pixie in it called "Chinky". To make it worst the drawing of "Chinky" shows an elf like creature with slitted eyes. However I think my son is totally and utter oblivous to this.

Admitally Enid Blyton lived 50 years ago when people didn't know better. But do you think I am making a mistake letting my son enjoy this book? He is even trying to read it himself that he is so desperate to know what happens next.

When my son chose this book I had no idea that it had a pixie in it called "Chinky" other wise I would have diverted him towards something like Ronald Dahl.

Oh alright then. Gnight.

Balls · 23/06/2007 00:10

Now awen, surely you could experiment with carrying juicing oranges in your bag to be squeezed at the ready in a mobile juicer ont he back of your backpack. Just not trying eh?

UCM · 23/06/2007 00:09

Actually, WE like the current shrek toys.

MamaMaiasaura · 23/06/2007 00:09

Quattro-- NNNOOOO not the fruitshoot thing (can I be smug again )

Argghh forgot about the waltons. John Boys mole used to really irritate me.

UCM · 23/06/2007 00:08

And if in Sainsburys he wants a drink, I hand him a bottle of freshly tapped water, from me house, if he complains I then cuff him round the head.

Balls · 23/06/2007 00:07

Crikey there are parents who aren't listening solely to Wheels on the Bus in their spare time after the kids have gone to bed! Shock emoticon!

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2007 00:07

None of the above QC. I'd have a chilled bottle of tap water at the ready.

UCM · 23/06/2007 00:07

Don't be fucking daft, even if we go into ''Macdonalds'' DS only gets the chips and a tropicana - I EAT the cheesburger.

pointydog · 23/06/2007 00:06

s'like the blardy waltons

MamaMaiasaura · 23/06/2007 00:05

nite pointydog, good chatting with you. about the wine tho

MamaMaiasaura · 23/06/2007 00:04

tut tut - you used a ; instead of a ' (runs off to other thread to tell)

We do the same, when listening to James Blunt we used to suddenly speak/turn music down

pointydog · 23/06/2007 00:04

i'm all calm and ready for bed now.

'Cept i will have bad dreams about armadiollor's mum

Quattrocento · 23/06/2007 00:04

Back to fruitshoots you lot.

You are standing in Sainsburys. Your 6 year old (imagine he/she has grown or shrunk) is with you. You think he/she needs a drink

Do you

(a) Buy him a bumper pack of fruitshoots and lovingly pour them down his throat?

(b) Buy him freshly squeezed orange instead and lovingly ...

(c) Cuff him or her around the head?

Because I reckon the EB parents are going for option A when option B is available and option C almost certainly preferable.

pointydog · 23/06/2007 00:03

we don;t censor msuci, although don;t listen to really sweary stuff.

whenever lisetning to tapes in teh car I cough at the end of hte line 'i don;t really give a fuck' and that has worked qyite well up till now

TheArmadillo · 23/06/2007 00:02

MamaMaiasaura · 23/06/2007 00:01

Balls - he could reach them alrigth - they werent on the top shelf.

Pointydog.. grr me.. over emotional .. didnt mean to come across as sneery either (def not me) Just strong views too

TheArmadillo · 23/06/2007 00:00

oh I agree with that Q.

Now ds has got to an age where he is more aware of things (and repeating them) it surprises me how much e.g. music I listen to without ever considering the lyrics for example.

Was searching for a child suitable dvd for him to watch the other day. The only thing we had in a house full of dvds was shrek.

1 film out of about 200. I had never noticed that/considered it before.

(He was ill, I wanted something that would keep him entertained and I was sick of CBeebies).

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2007 00:00

Congrats Awen!

pointydog · 22/06/2007 23:58

well, I am sorry, then. Didn't mean to argue with an over emotional pregant person

Balls · 22/06/2007 23:58

Well presumably he couldn't reach them ..

2shoes · 22/06/2007 23:58

i had a trip down memory lane and got a book of short childrens stories by EB to read to dd(sn) have to say I gave up after reding one where the teddy got hit by the other toys for being naughty!!!
but when it comes to telling ds who is nt what books he can and can't read I draw the line

pointydog · 22/06/2007 23:57
