to be annoyed when people don't know the difference between bringing and buying?

When you pay for something - you have bought it
When you carry something - you have brought it.
Is is really that hard to get them right?

I always thought they were using 'Baby' as a name, like 'Baby Jones' when they are first born.
I am a bit of a language pedant myself, but married a true Cockney so have had to get over myself a bit and learn to accept that we are all different and that both accent and dialect are a part of individuality. Just be glad we're not all alike- how boring would that be?

A friend of my DH says 'He learnt it to me'. I have to bite my tounge so as not to scream at him that it should be, 'He tought it to you'

I think the baby thing is the midwives trying to talk in the neutral third person and failing.

Personally I hate it when new born babies are referred to as 'it' as in 'it's a girl/boy' so 'bathe baby' tends to pass me by .

Phew glad it's not me. Pacific, could of, yourself also all very irritating. Haven't specifically notice seccetery but will probably hear it a lot now.
Sorry that it's not a jumble sale scandal thread though, that would be good!

Ooooh, MargotandJerry, I know just what you mean with the "yourself" thing!

I have to deal with a lot of recruitment agents (grrr), and they do a lot of "I just wanted to touch base with yourself".

Bad grammar in CVs, too. Aaaaaaaaargh

The baby thing is a midwife thing I think they always say bath baby or hold baby, must be their training .

I've got a classic...in the ante natal class the midwife says "hold baby like this" or "when you are bathing baby". It's hold THE baby. THE baby. It's A baby. Surely this one word is easy to include. The health service cuts aren't that bad are they? It does seem to be a habit.

I hate it when people / adverts miss out the 'to' in sentences. i.e. Helps contain doodahs' or 'helps neutrilise flams' etc.

I hate people picking up on words I have said wrongly. I suffered several years of speech therapy so I find it an achievement when I can string a sentence together in the first place.

I get pissed off when people say volumptuous instead of voluptuous, or pompadom instead of poppadom. Brought/bought annoys me too! As does "can you borrow me a tenner?"

No, but I can lend you one...

Try asking a Bristolian to say Idea, they always say Ideal, just seems very hard for them to just say Idea.

'Lend' and 'borrow' is regional I thought - but I do still find it very annoying. But then I'm a bit of a grammar-Nazi.

Ooohhh bought and brought. That is super-annoying. I hear it a lot (London)

And agree on "I could of..." - disastrous.

Our very nice and intelligent HR person at work says "I come into work at the weekend and I done loads of work". It makes me DEMENTED.

Also incorrect use of yourself as in "any drinks for yourself, madam" as much used by air hostesses.

Dh drives me mad because he always says "I borrowed it to him" (instead of lent it).

I used to go on and on about it to him, then I found out that in his first language(Welsh), they use the same word for both, so he isn't quite as ignorant as I thought.
