YABU, (and slightly snobby). We have had to use whatever came to hand (be it white paper the children have decorated, rest of x-mas paper, tin foil) due to being broke.

I don't understand why it bothers you, is your child going to keep the paper or the present?

I can't honestly remember the last time I bought wrapping paper for a birthday present.

I use variously;

Brown paper that dd has decorated

Newspaper (making sure there are no horrific images or words. I find one of the Sunday Supplements are usually ok, the travel section can usually be relied upon for a nice picture )

Tin Foil (only for small presents)

Dd's old comics (Beano is good)

Tissue paper

For decoration I have been known to tie up with coloured wool or stick on things such as feathers, buttons or pressed flowers.

All very cheap and cheerful

I often do yell stuff like that in my head!

I think this is just about the most snobbish thing I've ever read on mumsnet. People are starving in the third world, people are struggling everywhere with terminal illness, there are battered children, women struggling on their own to raise families, and you're insulted by someone using the wrong kind of paper on a gift for a child who is too young to understand what a birthday is.

Please don't ever invite me anywhere, I'd hate to be a disappointment to you and cause all this heartache for you.

at least he got a present, and it even turned up on time! My inlaws can only manage a card posted the day after they have phoned asking did it arrive

You know YABU really, don't you? Everyone gets disappointed for their dc but there will be worse disappointments to come I expect. Just think of all those posters we get on here saying their ILs or parents or the godparents or whoever never sends presents for their dc's birthdays , not even a card.
Be really happy about the present and be really nice about it.

But, it just goes to show the power of marketing/advertising in this day and age, that we feel we HAVE to have event "appropriate" wrapping paper.
When you think about it, what is wrong with self coloured wrapping paper for ANY event, or even brown wrapping paper. I think I might start buying self coloured paper and then it can be used for any event-christmas,,birthdays, anything. In fact I have sometimes used coloured tissue paper which I think looks nicer than wrapping paper anyway.

I do this all the time. More often tho, I just send them not wrapped up, or give them in the plastic bag from the shop. Its such a waste of paper anyway.......who cares. Life is too short.

Can't remember using obvious Christmas wrapping paper, have been known to use tissue paper, tin foil, hastily child-decorated recycled brown wrapping paper.

it depends who sent it i guess, i sometimes use pritt stick and string if i cant find sellotape but usually thats for kids birthdays i have a very strict gift bag policy for adults, i usually recycle those though

I have also done the brown paper with kid drawn decoration line when pressed.

Dare I say this? Oh go on, I will, when you have more than one child it can be hard to find the time to colour co-ordinate, loveingly handwrap stuff. Or at any rate it is for me.

I spend half my life in the car, rushing kids from A to B , only to be told at the last minute that 'There is a party tomorrow, Mum' TBH the kids are lucky to get a gift, in our house. And it isn't for the want of affection or trying, it is due to the chronic lack of time that afflicts us.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest, and this is something I am probably guilty of doing myself! I often have several rolls of Christmas paper lying around months after Christmas, which I would use to wrap a childs present if I forgot to buy birthday paper!
I'm sure it didn't bother your DS at all, and it is the thought of the actual present that counts, surely!

Best mate forgot my b'day, phoned instead and we spent 30 minutes crying with laughter on the phone. Much better than a card IMHO. It is the people that matter.

Totally unreasonable. Still if you cant moan on here it would be difficult to moan about that in rl!
