...and it wasn't their 5 yr old cousin that had put it on them it was their f*ing 58 yr old grandad they're only 3 I'm furious!

newlifenewname · 07/06/2007 19:56

My ds who's 3 does his own. He likes sparkly best.

inamuckingfuddle · 07/06/2007 19:56

I am concerned about removing it tbh, I don't want it on, but equally don't want to put nasty remover on their skin, esp DT2 who has mild exczema and has is on antibiotics at the mo for an extreme reaction to chicken pox

inamuckingfuddle - now that would be a whole different thread ..............

misdee · 07/06/2007 19:54

dd3 had her nails painted deep purple the other week. she is 2. i had done mine, dd1+2 wanted theirs done, and she insisted.

HonorMatopoeia · 07/06/2007 19:52

My Dd (2.4) had her nails painted by her auntie (whilst I was sat there). She didn't ask me if she could - she was painting my MIL's toenails at the same time. I must admit I was less than happy but, as you say, didn't intend to fuss. It was kind of worse because it was a deep red colour too (although it was Chanel and I felt a little better it wasn't Rimmel joke!)I'm afraid I'm waiting for it to grow off as I don't want toput nailvarnish remover near her skin. In the meantime I won't let her wear open toe sandals! I know this may seem extreme, but like F&Z I just feel it is in the realm of things that are slightly too grown up for her at the moment. Having said that, I'm sure when she starts asking for them to be done, I won't be able to say no!

inamuckingfuddle · 07/06/2007 19:51

it is the stereotyping thing that really gets me I think, my ex-miner FIL would never do this to a boy

OP posts:
PrincessPeaNips · 07/06/2007 19:50

who cares?
my 3yo son pretty much always has strange coloured nails
his 9yo sister does it, mostly. what's the big deal?

Tommy · 07/06/2007 19:49

I agree with franny and OP too.

I think if this happened to me (although unlikely as only have DSs and the thought of grandad wanting them to wear nail varnish is just too funny to think about)I think I would be rolling my eyes sort of disapproving and just take it off.

FrannyandZooey · 07/06/2007 19:49

Bizarrely I wouldn't mind a 3 y o boy wearing it, so it must be the get 'em young gender stereotyping I object to

if there was chemical free nail varnish I would let ds wear it

bozza · 07/06/2007 19:46

also i only allow pink. But as you can imagine don't get much argument on that score from a 3yo girl.

francagoestohollywood · 07/06/2007 19:45

agree with franny.

FrannyandZooey · 07/06/2007 19:45

LOL Bozza

I have some great rules like that as well

FrannyandZooey · 07/06/2007 19:44

Well OP I admit if it was my 3 year old dd I wouldn't be chuffed

but I would expect to be in the minority there tbh

bozza · 07/06/2007 19:44

My 3yo regularly wears nail varnish on her toes. I don't allow it on fingers. Not sure why this arbitrary rule.

FrannyandZooey · 07/06/2007 19:43

I meant dressing up in high heels, not wearing them round town

Nail varnish and nail varnish remover contain some pretty toxic ingredients

I think the Women's Environmental Network has some good information on them if you are interested

inamuckingfuddle · 07/06/2007 19:43

oh god I won't make a fuss about it, just thought it was a bit much, obviously I'm in the minority...

OP posts:
belgo · 07/06/2007 19:42

high heels aren't the same at all - nailvarnish is harmless, heels are dangerous for children.

FrannyandZooey · 07/06/2007 19:41

I am kind of in two minds about it

on one hand I think it is innocent fun and we all did it etc etc

on the other hand I see younger and younger girls wearing this stuff for REAL, and I think by introducing it at a young age when they are not really aware or interested, that we could be doing them a disservice

I think you have to think about what your FIL's intentions were, though. Did he believe he was giving them a nice innocent fun treat? Almost undoubtedly. I would let it go and just cringe privately, if you can.

Personally I have not let ds wear it yet (he would like to) because I worry about the chemicals in the nail varnish and in the remover!

BandofMothers · 07/06/2007 19:41

I did assume they were girls, if not is slightly starnge imo, sorry any one who disagrees. But MrsW that is not normal. I find that disturbing

We face paint a lot too

mckenzie · 07/06/2007 19:40

my 2 year old DD comes home from her nans (MIL) wearing nail varnish and smelling or Channel perfume sometimes. I don't particularly like it I must admit (like F&Z suggested, I think I'm uncomfortable with her doing things that I consider are too grown up for MIL and DD want to do with their time together then who I am to complain.

If DD came home with earrings having spent the afternoon with her Nan then I would kick up a stink but nail varnish seems fairly harmless.

inamuckingfuddle · 07/06/2007 19:40

'instead of being pleased that theri grandfather isnt enforcing them, you are the one who is so angry that he isnt.' In what way exactly? How has what I've said led you to that conclusion?

OP posts:
totaleclipse · 07/06/2007 19:39

I often put nail varnish on my 3 year old dts, they love it and its a good way to spend time with them, I cant see the harm.

handlemecarefully · 07/06/2007 19:39

We've done nail varnish too (dd is 4, nearly 5). Wouldn't do cosmetics or earrings / 'adult' jewellery though.

I

ScaryHairy · 07/06/2007 19:39

It's not a big deal, just a little treat when they're with their Grandad. My niece (age 4) wears lippy (usually a hideous colour) when she stays with my mother. She'd never be allowed to at home (and she knows it) so no harm done. She's just playing dress-up and want to be like mummy.

cylonbabe · 07/06/2007 19:38

dd is allowed to wear makeup to a party, weddings etc. actually they whole thing started at her aunties wedding. but its up to the mother to control makeup to school.
nailpolish just isnt in the same league as makeup, because makeup is bad for skin, np shouldnt be.
