Why are some families so loud!!

Why are some families so loud? I mean why do yet have to shout when speaking to each other and generally have no regard for others? We’re staying in a lovely quiet self catering house in south devon, there is a large garden and shared pool with two other cottages. The people in the middle cottage are like us, a family of four, enjoying themselves, having fun but not shouting at the top of their lungs. Family in end cottage, three pasty kids singing loudly, screaming, unable to have a quiet conversation.

It’s the same in restaurants, we’re always sitting next to the loudest people in there 😂😂

God help me! AIBU and a grouchy old cow?

Grin about somebody pursueing their lips

blueskiesandforests · 21/07/2018 17:43

Queen I'm not on holiday, and my kids have dark Mediterranean skin, so I'm happy in the knowledge that she isn't!

Witchend · 21/07/2018 17:43

DH's family are like that. There is a bit of an underlying arrogance in there that is "well of course people don't mind us because we're so wonderful".
I sit there and wince.

But part of it is that the people round them are noisy, so they increase the noise to be heard... and no one ever tells them to be quiet. If it's ever commented on then they just say "oh we're just noisy, can't help it".
If anyone discovers a volume control/off switch that can be added to adults I'll happily pay for that for them.

QueenOfIce · 21/07/2018 17:42

Op it's blueskies, she's your neighbour Grin

LovelyBath77 · 21/07/2018 17:41

At least it sounds like they are enjoying themselves

LovelyBath77 · 21/07/2018 17:40

I know a family who do this and the parents are loud also. i think the kids have to be loud to make themselves heard! Of sort of join in...

blueskiesandforests · 21/07/2018 17:39

It depends on the loud doesn't it?

Loud in restaurants - not ok.

Shouting arguments especially if aggressive - absolutely not ok.

But kids singing loudly outdoors on holiday? Objecting to that is beyond churlish! Do you tell your kids not to sing incase it annoys someone, when out in the garden during the day? I'd hate anyone to tell their kids not to make happy noise outdoors in a holiday cottage garden in the day because of me. Joy sucker doesn't even begin to cover that, that's not respecting others it's nasty.

Presumably they're pasty because they have pale skin or live somewhere they can't usually play outside. The poor sods might be bubbling over with excitement at the space and fresh air and comparative freedom of the holiday cottage location, not knowing their neighbors is pursuing her lips about pasty kids singing...

Crikeyblimey · 21/07/2018 17:38

I think maybe they watch too much Eastenders! Everybody shouts on that programme. I can’t watch, it’s too shouty.

ProbablyABitOdd · 21/07/2018 17:34

I’m sure there are plenty of other areas in South Devon that have a similar set up though aren’t there? Probably?

pandarific · 21/07/2018 17:34

three pasty kids singing loudly, screaming, unable to have a quiet conversation.

Grin YANBU op, I haaaaate loud, uncouth fuckers like this. We have a family of them three/four doors down. They also have a yappy little dog, a warbling teenage girl and always some kind of annoying thing in the garden (a trampoline, an inflatable pool thing) around which they all congregate and happily roar at each other for hours.

I burn to turn the hose on them.

ProbablyABitOdd · 21/07/2018 17:33

I live in a cottag in south Devon in a very similar set up to described Blush. If it is us (and my dc’s very definitely fall into the pasty category!) then I apologise. Dc1 is autistic and dc2 copies everything he does so they do make an absolute racket. Also we were trying to put our tent up in the garden this afternoon too see if it’s all still there whilst also trying to stop dc1 and 2 running into the sides of it while we were erecting it.

Sorry if it is us! We are the only residents here though and half the time there’s no one in the cottages so it doesn’t matter if w make a racket.

QueenOfIce · 21/07/2018 17:33

My worst nightmare having noisy people around me. On holiday next door shouted 'it's raining' from inside their room. So I shouted back 'thanks for letting us know' they kept it down since.

Polarbearflavour · 21/07/2018 17:32

I’m a quiet person and I hate noise and often ask myself why people are so loud in public places. But then I’m not a massive fan of people anyway!

hungryhippie · 21/07/2018 17:32

As luckycat007 says, there are loud people in generally.
I totally agree with you though, I really dislike loud people.

matchmakers · 21/07/2018 17:31

My Dad and brothers all shout instead of speak! It drives me and my DSM mad. If I'm on the phone to my Dad DH can hear him down the line from the next room.

I've no idea why they do it. None of them are elderly (Dad mid fifties, one brother early thirties and the other early twenties) and none of them have hearing issues. They just speak loudly and have deep voices that really carry. I don't have this problem.

I'm forever saying 'I'm right next to you, you don't need to shout' at the dinner table but have yet to have an effect on them!

Some people are just noisier than others I guess.

blueskiesandforests · 21/07/2018 17:31

3 pasty kids who sing?

sexnotgender · 21/07/2018 17:30

It is pretty dreadful! I'm really struggling but as they're my husbands family I need to smile and play nice.

Did I mention they are staying for 3 weeks?!!

luckycat007 · 21/07/2018 17:29

@childlessstepmum15 I hear you (forgive the pun) - but its people in general not just families!!

Darwinstheory · 21/07/2018 17:28

We are on holiday in Corfu at the moment in a lovely, small apartment with a pool. 2 residents bring the 13 members of their family every day who take over all the beds, shout and scream all day. We feel your pain. They remarked how quiet our kids were. I had to bite my tongue to stop saying it was because they simply had respect for others.

Childlessstepmum15 · 21/07/2018 17:27

@sexnotgender that sounds terrible. I hate house guests, I’m officially an anti social recluse who much prefers quiet and a good book.

sexnotgender · 21/07/2018 17:25

And when I say scream I mean blood curdling someone is being murdered screaming. Not just regular kids noises.

Also the constant dad dad dad dad dad dad dad... to get his attention. They don't pause between words to give him any chance to respond.

Keeptrudging · 21/07/2018 17:24

DH's family are loud. They all shout/talk over each other. They're not nasty, just used to talking like this. I have to tell DH to turn it down sometimes when we're out, he's totally unaware.

Childlessstepmum15 · 21/07/2018 17:24

@ariawa you’re funny

Harrykanesrightsock · 21/07/2018 17:24

DHs family are like this. It’s very stressful. Nobody listens to each other do they just get louder and louder. Nobody notices that I just don’t speak when I’m there.

PrincessPear · 21/07/2018 17:23

My son has a loud voice, as do I. No idea why. DP is kind of loud too.
