No, I have felt a bit miffed at her landed bloody gentry attitude for a while. Rolling on the floor in your knickers was good enough for us as little girls to idolise and pay money to watch, but Lourdes is all protected form that stuff, she has been noted at interviews saying how strict she is with her daughter and how she has changed a lot of her perspective on casual sex since having a daughter.

Its more analogous to an advert, imo. MacDonalds show lots of happy people eating in their restaurants, because they know that people copy what they see on the tv!

LOL at Mrs Apron, I would be horrified and deeply depressed if I found Keith Richards or Mick Jagger attractive. It's bad enough finding people like Nick Robinson a bit of all right, I would feel my life was over if I descended to Keith Richards.

I think it's a long way from saying "this is how I feel, this is what I've done" to saying "You go out and do it too". I think I've seen enough threads on Mumsnet where people talk about their own personal experience, to accept that they don't necessarily mean to advocate that their experience is the only valid one and ought to be the template for everyone else.

And anyway, these are pop songs. Would you accuse Boney M of encouraging mothers to bring up their sons "to handle a gun" or all the other pop singers who have ever been, who have sung about sex, drugs, wanting to kill people, etc. of literally inciting their fans to do the same? Because if so, I think you're stretching it a bit.

I agree that she was a bit like Tracey Emin- working out her tiresome neuroses in public via her "art". The difference is that Tracey Emin does it in an esoteric modern art context mostly of interest to art students and old farts, while Madonna did it in a mainstream industry where the chief consumers are teenagers. Which granted does add a layer of responsibility I suppose, that Emin doesn't have and takes us into a whole new discussion about role models and the balance between expressing themselves honestly and their duty not to frighten the horses. We could do a whole other thread about that and I'm sure it would be a very interesting one.

bear in mind, this was not aimed at rational adults, but at teenage girls. 1984-85 Madonna was the main thing that wasnt awful pinstriped suits and working in the city, she was the only way you could rebel. So yes, she did have a lot of influence.

The image presented with the books were a bit naff for me but we don't have to read them do we? I must admit I only started following her doings a bit as we were pregnant at the same time during her last pg. Have to do something in your last trimester with your first baby .

I look at Madonna in the light of her losing her mother young. Some of her wildness might have been looking for love (awful cliche I know)
Maybe motherhood has grounded her a lot and made her look back on her wildness as something not quite ideal or the behaviour of a happy well adjusted person? Although I think a lot of her work had a lot of value - it was all about her wasn't it like Tracey Emin's work?

I don't think she went out of her way to get everyone to copy her, look like her etc.

On the contrary, she was very clear that she did her own thing. Young women copied her look, style etc. because they admired it.

She was fab.

Scottishthistle et al, I do not mean to 'slate' her appearance nor am I jealous of her exactly (though wouldn't turn down one or two of her millions I'm sure!) but I do think she has fallen victim to the Posh Spice type thing of extra thinness and pointless hauteur, and it is a shame. She looked so much better and more interesting in the early 80s with a small amount of fat on her body.

I think she started off as an interesting figure for women, if in the end she was too chameleonic and slick to really be a sexual rebel as she claimed to be. But now she looks to me like hollow pop royalty and I hate all the virtuous mum posturing- like that Laura Ashley getup she wore to launch her children's book. Urgh.

Just goes to show experience is usually more important than something which has only been read about!

If it's not jealousy I fail to understand why you're holding her responsible for casual sex etc etc...There are many other Celebs on the same peg as Madonna.

Surely you don't believe she actually influenced many clever teens or do you???
