Daddy and daughter date nights?

How long has this been a thing? An advert for a local Daddy daughter date night has just popped up on my Facebook. Seems a bit bizarre.

Anyone who is "Wise beyond their Years" should probably know better than to resurrect a 7 year old thread 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️ 🙄

Actually it's more important than ever (or 7 years ago) that a father pursue his daughter's heart given the climate of the country and everything happening.

English please?

It’s from 2018!

I think any father who wouldn't spend intentional time with his daughter is a failure. Get over the fact it is called "daddy daughter" date - it's the idea behind it, nothing more. Sick people.

It's disgusting. My father and I don't have a good relationship. I don't feel comfortable being around him.

That's a different thing. Assuming the father is loving, kind and intentional, he should be pursuing the heart of his children, boys and girls alike. Taking his daughter on a "daddy daughter" date models the kind of man she should look for in her older years and is a fun and important time for a young girls heart to be with her dad.

mummyhaschangedhername · 02/05/2018 14:32

We do them, I certainly have never called them dates though.

I guess both of us (my DH and I) were raised in a fairly conservative church, although neither really active now, so perhaps that's why as others have shared. Although, I've never called them dates or treated them as such.

We just like to do one-on-one times with the kids, we have four children, we sometimes both go out with with one (for example we went to a concert this week, we knew one of our children would love it and last minute managed to get an extra ticket so he came along on OUR date night). But we regularly take one of the children out to various things, I think that was normal? No?

I do think it's weird in the generalised stereotypical gender roles some people described, but surely just asking a child out for a treat isn't that weird, is it?

ShaniaTwainAndTheRubyKitKat · 02/05/2018 14:13

ush those photos WTF

Slarti · 02/05/2018 14:06

It's like purity balls. Where a father takes his young daughter, in a white dress, so she can pledge to stay a virgin until marriage. Because her sexuality and body aren't her own. They belong to her father.

Maybe I've missed a huge detail, but how is it anything like that?

Aeroflotgirl · 02/05/2018 14:03

That's horrible, date night would imply something sexual, I hate that phrase used in relation to children going out with their parents.

ushuaiamonamour · 02/05/2018 14:01

Some more of those very alarming photos in one place: www.featureshoot.com/2014/04/david-magnusson-purity/. How the families and the photographer could fail to see the overt suggestion of incest is utterly beyond me.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam Indeed. Eartha Kitt made that crystal clear when she sang the final line ''Cause my daddy treats it so well.'

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 02/05/2018 13:22

Men trying to police their daughters sexuality really turns my stomach

Yep. My best friend had a baby daughter two years ago, and her partner made plenty of comments about 'she's not dating until she's thirty' and 'any future boys will have me to answer to' etc. I'm not sure if he genuinely does mean this deep down, or whether he's just parroting stuff he's heard other dads say about their little girls, but it is sickening.

AngelsSins · 02/05/2018 12:19

If it's all so innocent and normal, why don't we hear about father and son dates?

Men trying to police their daughters sexuality really turns my stomach, even the small comments like "she can't date until she's 30" - they'd never say that about their sons.

SenecaFalls · 02/05/2018 12:07

the purity stuff referred to here is part of a tiny minority and highly regional to boot. Most americans wouldn't know what you were talking about

Exactly. I love in the South, a part of the country known as the Bible Belt, and even here this purity stuff, for those who have even heard of it, is considered creepy and very much outside the mainstream. It belongs to a tiny minority of fundamentalist Christians.

bringincrazyback · 02/05/2018 11:17

Yuck.

Laiste · 02/05/2018 11:09

Oh those photos! The droopy eyed dad's wearing suits and clutching their young daughters to them who are wearing ... well, wedding dresses basically.

The imagery is none too subtle.

YOU belong to ME.

ToastyFingers · 02/05/2018 10:21

Ick. I hate the use of the word 'date' here.

DH takes our daughters out. We usually call it 'going to the park/beach/duck pond' or whatever.

I often spend 1-on-1 time with my dad. In fact, he's helping me run some errands tonight, and we'll probably get some food afterwards. It is not a date of any sort.

OrchidInTheSun · 02/05/2018 05:13

School? Son!

OrchidInTheSun · 02/05/2018 05:12

Except there aren't Daddy School n date nights. It's sexualising the relationship. It's grim

Italiangreyhound · 02/05/2018 04:47

I think it is fine. In this event 'date' means a time, it's an Americanism.

Agree with @LittleLionMansMummy "If it makes any difference I'll be having dinner dates with dd too when she's old enough. Date is merely a marker in the diary for me"

It shouldn't be just about girls and their dads and boys and their mums, that does sound kind of creepy. But any child and their parent, quality time, together. A great idea.

Like a play date. No one thinks the 7 year olds on a play date are actually 'dating'.

pallisers · 02/05/2018 03:30

date means something very different in the US - like Seneca and others say, people use it to mean appointment or arrangement or day out.

That said, my dh would never ever use the word date with his daughters. He regularly brings his children (all late teens/early 20s - 2 girls, 1 boy) for brunch/lunch etc but he would say "meeting tom for breakfast tomorrow, anyone else want to come?"

the purity stuff referred to here is part of a tiny minority and highly regional to boot. Most americans wouldn't know what you were talking about (unless they read the daily mail).

IamSerena · 02/05/2018 03:03

Nice idea but the phrasing gives me the boak
