to be unhappy at a child peeing in the pool?

In the pool today, a toddler stood up, pulled down his swimming costume and peed in the pool. His mum just smiled.

Ok, I know the pool is full of pee, fine. But come on! This is just not on, is it?

No No No!
Very Wrong!
Not Nice Mother!

DarrellRivers · 10/05/2007 22:12

Maybe she couldn't work out quickly enough which face to put on at that particularly embarassing point in time.

jenkel · 10/05/2007 22:10

Got to admit that its not something that I would like to see.

But, if you dont want to knowingly swim in urine, never visit a swimming pool!

NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2007 21:57

I know urine isn't actually a medical risk, but I don't want to knowingly swim in it.

I didn't expect her to shout or hit him. I just expected her to look less proud. (She really didn't look embarassed. I'm sure of it.)

Would definitely have told the child that it was wrong to wee in the pool!

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 10/05/2007 16:13

can understand the childs logic but you'd think the mother would say something along the lines of 'oh well done for realising you need a wee wee but it needs to be done in the toilet, remember toilet for wee wee, swimming pool for swimming' not reprimanding as such but making the child aware this is not the place

although we all know they do it, we still could discourage it!!

excuseme · 10/05/2007 15:34

The mum should have reacted and told him off. Mnd you I prefer wee in the pool to the time I went swimming and a child was sick and some went in the pool

lyrabelacqua · 10/05/2007 15:31

Madamez, urine may be sterile but the parts it comes out of usually aren't...

chocolattegirl · 10/05/2007 15:22

I think the sea is worse than pools for being polluted with urine etc.

I'd guess that the mum was embarrassed but then I've seen people use the loos before swimming and not bother to wash their hands after 'as we're going to get wet in the pool anyway'.

madamez · 10/05/2007 15:14

BEar in mind that urine is sterile (unless you have an infection of some sort) and pools are full of chlorine so the amount of wee in them won't actually do you any harm.
Also, it's possible that what you thought was a smug smile was actually a rictus of embarrassment on behalf of the mother. And some schools of toilet training suggest that if you reprimand a LO too much for doing it in the wrong place it sets up further problems...

MarthaM · 10/05/2007 15:14

I remember being shocked when my niece asked to go for a wee and my sister told her to do it in the pool! Someone once said that the urine free section of the pool is like the none smoking area of a pub.

americantrish · 10/05/2007 15:07

EEeew. his mom definitely didnt handle that well. blaming her, not the toddler.
yep pools are full of pee, but seeing someone do it, well, it'd put me off!

SoupDragon · 10/05/2007 12:23

Accidental peeing, fine. Deliberate peeing, also fine. BUT Reaction of mother, absolutely not on. You can't blame the toddlers for doing it, you have to blame the mother for not reacting properly and teaching her child not to.

marieg76 · 10/05/2007 11:48

this reminds me of a notice I saw at a swimming pool years ago; "We do not swim in your loos so please don't pee in our pool"

helenhismadwife · 10/05/2007 10:43

ewwww thats nasty

Lyra

my dd is being a bit of a nightmare to potty train and came in from the garden yesterday and proudly announced she had done a pee (cant say wee wee here its french for noddy ) when we said thats good where she said in the garden hope the neighbours didnt see

NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2007 07:46

No staff saw it, I don't think. There was only one lifeguard I could see, and the peeing boy had his back to the lifeguard. (And it was a very short wee - I think the boy was doing it for novelty, his mum had taken him to the loo just before, as I ran into them in there!)

At any rate, I don't think any staff saw. I don't know what they would have done.

Oh, I don't think peeing in the flower bed is at all the same. I'd rather my DS peed somewhere a bit more private, but a flowerbed would be ok.

Yes, I did wonder whether this little boy might think pooing was ok, too? I didn't get to find out, luckily.

If they can make that ind of effort they can go to the toilet like we have to! I know they all do it, and DD1 was scared to go in the water at all 'in case a bit of wee comes out' after I told her that if she needs a wee we will get out of the pool, go to the loo and then come back, as peeing in the pool isn't very nice. We were swimming once and the whole pool was evacuated because someone had pooed in the pool. That's what those nets on long poles are for!

mylittleimps · 09/05/2007 22:47

sorry I meant they're not their

mylittleimps · 09/05/2007 22:46

young ds's peeing in flower beds - i think is acceptable as there's always the excuse they've been caught short and used their initative (!) (and i don't think other mothers would have been as mortified as you felt) , just look on the bright side, by the time their 18 and at birthday parties there could be a lot worse ending up in the flower beds!!!

ChasingSquirrels · 09/05/2007 22:39

see i think toddlers weeing in the flower beds in fine - in the compost heap is better....

powder28 · 09/05/2007 22:36

Lyra

lyrabelacqua · 09/05/2007 22:34

DS2 went to a birthday party in a friend's garden and i was talking to another mum when someone called my name. I looked round to see ds2 with his trousers round his knees peeing into the flower beds, watched by all the other mums. I was mortified
I tried to stop him but it was too late. i agree the mother of the pool boy should have done something.

mylittleimps · 09/05/2007 22:29

oh my goodness, i mean the mother not indicating it's not acceptable practice, and the child knew enough to take his pants down...
I know boys will do all sort of things that you really don't want them to do in public but mine if they do, are immediately told of any anti-social behaviour. I mean you don't have to chastise a child to point out something is not acceptable.

didn't any staff see this? what were the lifeguards doing?

bettythebuilder · 09/05/2007 22:21

eeew- had this on holiday last year, when a Mum actually took her little boy to the filter bit round the edge of the pool so he could wee in it. It may be a russian thing, though, because a little Russian boy also weed in dd's toy truck on the beach
Yanbu (eeew again)
