For those worried about debt there are ways to cut back. Our nanny is brilliant, most non consumerist person I've ever met - it's wonderful to watch. She'll make the children walk half a mile to save a 50p parking charge.

I agree with Xenia - spending within means in unrelated to income but somehow it seems worse for those on low income.

I wish I was boring and careful with money! If I could go back 6-7 years ago I would have changed so much. I would be in a better position today and not struggling all the time!

Some people earn very little and over spend. Some earn very little and try to live within their means. Same with high earners. It's almost unrelated to your income. Some stupid women aren't interested in money and their husband disappears adn they can't even say what pensions or bank accounts or share he has they are that thick! Those types of women need a good shaking. Also it's interesting isn't it? I'd rather rather fill in a tax return than buy a dress any day.

I think people who piss their money away and run up loads of debt and then have to struggle for years or boring and very stupid! Better to be boring and have a somewhere to live and food on the table, than struggle everyday and cause yourself stress!

I've got a friend who prides herself in having no debt, no credit cards, no nothing. Her fav phrase is 'everything in our house is paid for' - so f'in what!!

Her and her husband never go out, they shop at cheapo clothes shops, her kids don't go to playcentres, she won't come out with me to see a show or go to the zoo with kids etc etc BUT her settee is payed for - well whoopy f'in do!!

My theory is, you only live once, life is for living and (within reason),what's a few debts if you're both in good jobs and have a steady salary coming in.

Should add they earn over £40 grand a year!

Depends. If they're forever banging on about how they budget carefully and use teabags twice, then they may well be pretty boring. If they claim that it's easy to live on a low income but forget to count the fact that they bought their home 10 or more years ago and therefore are paying far less a proportion of their income in housing costs than most people who are either renting, trying to buy or have just managed to buy, then they are annyoingly smug. If they come from a comfortably off family and have always been in regular, properly paid, more-than-minimum wage work, then it's no wonder they are "good" with money as they have never been without a safety net. Boring, maybe, smug ignorant fuckwits, definitely.

I personally think people who have £1000's of debt incredibly boring because they're always wining about money!!!

If you go to the clearance sections of T K Maxx, you can buy stuff (new with tags) much cheaper than the charity shop.

if you are really poor, buying a garment in a charity shop is a treat that is beyond your reach most of the time, let alone a real shop like TKMaxx.

well newlife, at the time, I WAS poor, though not deeply in debt - we had just been on benefits, and I had the usual 2 jeans, 2 t shirts, a few pre-baby clothes wardrobe.

I didnt say they were wearing expensive clothes, just that they were very well dressed!

I have given up being more than the bare minimum of responsible with money.

The curious thing about Aitch's thread yesterday was that many people assumed that those who were good with money had loads of it.

I couldn't see the connection then, and I don't see it now. I earn less in a month (SAHM) then many people spend on a pair of jeans, but I still manage to save some of it.

I'm well dressed, very deeply in debt but I shop in Primark mostly.

not sure about boring, but I do remember seeing a tv program about people who were deeply in debt, and couldnt help noticing how well dressed they all were! Evidently those store cards had been put to good use.

I'm responsible with my money, generally always have been. I have even saved up for things like a new kitchen or a car!

I have had loans in the past though but avoid store cards and always (mostly) pay off my credit card every month - only spending what I know I can afford.

I'm definately not boring - far from it. I have financial freedom, no money worries or stress and will be able to teach my kids a valuable lesson in life by example.

And, once the kids are grown up and left home, think of all the fun I will be having spending all the money I have on me!
