To be annoyed when disable badge holders use parent and toddler spaces

Well i probably am being unreasonable but i find this more of a cheak than anything. Me and my dp and dd luckily found a parent and toddler parking space (quite rare that happens) so i was happy about that. When i was loading dd into pushchair, someone went leaving an empty space and straight in was a couple with a disabled badge even though there were normal spaces free too. When they got out of the car i said to them 'you know these spaces are for parents with babies and pushchairs'. They said to me all grumy 'there isn't any disabled spaces'. I asked if they had been downstairs as there is always spaces and they said no we haven't, we are fine here'.

I felt very annoyed because if i can't find a mother and child space, i find a normal space and wouldn't even consider parking in a disable spot for obvious reasons plus they all kick off at people who do so why should it be different here. This couple walked straight into the shop we were next to and thats when i realised it wasn't about finding a disabled spot for them, they just wanted to park right outside the store for their own selfish convinience meanwhile some parent is struggling in a normal space to get her kids out the car with a tiny gap.

i have to go and get the standing frame and gaiters that ds2 gets for free in a minute

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:19

oh right - ok - well you said that "i have never said i SHOULD have priority and i HAVE said that if i don't get a m&t space, i happily park elsewhere AND i have said i don't have a problem with disabled people in general" so exactly what is the problem here? You're jst a bit peeved at someone with a disabled badge who parked in a M&T spot, even though you had been able to park in one as well?

sniff · 08/05/2007 16:19

UCM I have never read this AIBU topic before so I was shocked, I usually dont read them at all but I thought at first it must be a wind up,

I have hardly ever got involved in the arguments either

to the lady who wrote the OP it could have been my dad!! he has cancer which has killed of the nerve ending in his left leg you cant really tell when he walks he is just slow but if you look carefully he has what might be mistaken for a "beer belly" but unfortunatly its a growth

and he parks where he wants!!

expatinscotland · 08/05/2007 16:18

I wish I never had to fill out a DLA form.

I wish my daughter would one day potty train.

I wish she didn't have dyspraxia.

I wish people would stop telling me, 'She's so tall and pretty, it's such a shame' or 'What's wrong with her?'

I wish, oh, I love her, but sometimes I wish she were NT.

That's never, ever going to happen.

LazyLine · 08/05/2007 16:18

Nobody is "stereotyping" you, Icing. They are responding to words that YOU posted on a thread that You created. Read those horrid words. YOU wrote them. Remember?

lou33 · 08/05/2007 16:18

i bought a lovely home made cake for ds2 today, as he did so well swimming today, and i went to get it out of my car (not a free one that's coming on thurs), the lid opened and it went splat on the car mat

i scraped the dirty bits off and he hasn't noticed

niceglasses · 08/05/2007 16:17

Think Icing probably gotten the old message by now. Yes unreasonable, yes you got a bit of a hammering, but hang on in - it does have its good points!!

PeachyChocolateEClair · 08/05/2007 16:16

Me too littlesarah, DS3 won't go anywhere unless he is carried now and I an't manage ds1 and ds2 and carry ds3 alone, so tis internet when DH on shift. And I am grateful for it! (even though with gluten free it can take 3 hours )

There are ways around everything if you look hard enough. The existence of the blue badge is an exampe of that- its a way to get people with disabilities who might have been housebound (and a lot osf peolpe are- I am in the holidays and its horrid) out into the world.

LittleSarah · 08/05/2007 16:15

(However they did give me lemon grass instead of lemon thyme in the substitutions this morning, which did seem a little mad, still I got a random pack of stir fry veg which mollified me somewhat).

tubismybub · 08/05/2007 16:15

ok haven't read all the responses so apologies if i'm repeating but Icing you keep saying that there were normal spaces close to the shop so why didn't they use those as they didn't need a wide space?

Sorry you have to be a contortionist to get in and out of cars in those spaces if your young, fit and able christ knows how the elderly or less able are expected to do it, especially if the tosser next to you parks real close. It's not just about walking distance you know or wheelchairs.

i wish i had never found mn

I know that carpark well, actually, and I think that for people with disabilities it would be much harder to park downstairs. All the shops are upstairs, so they have to negotiate a lift or moving walkway to get into the shops. Which might be accessible, but if your issue is that you can't walk far, then it's much much harder.

You're not just being unreasonable, you should be ashamed of yourself, frankly.

LittleSarah · 08/05/2007 16:13

Ach, me?! Thanks TC and gess, you've been working so hard so this thread I figured some light relief was in order.

But, honestly, I was literally amazed to see the title, I thought it might have been a joke! Ah, if only!

You see I can't drive, so I used to walk and push the basket around the supermarket floor using the buggie and then load it up and walk home... and you know what, that was a bit of a PITA, so now I Shop Online. Tis a miracle.

IcingOnTheCake · 08/05/2007 16:13

well you asked me what i was annoyed about

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:12

Icing - sorry, what bit are you whatting at??!!

Can't belive I just typed that! LOL!

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:11

Exactly MB - I suggested ages ago that the OP could retract her statement at any point but no, instead there's been a lot of justifying.

lou33 · 08/05/2007 16:11

i'm hoping that i can get a blue badge for me when my back finally gives out from lifting ds2, i will be doubly blessed then

IcingOnTheCake · 08/05/2007 16:10

TC what??

OP posts:
lou33 · 08/05/2007 16:09

i'm back, did i miss anything?

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:09

Stop showing off Peachy! xx

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:09

So Icing - exactly what are you annoyed at then?

Blandmum · 08/05/2007 16:08

at the risk of paraphrasing John Cleese, 'we didn't start the argument, YOU did'

You asked AIBU, what did you expect?

Yes you are being unreasonable and selfish.

And utterly lacking in tact re the title and OP.

If you want to change you mind, fine, we'd all accept it.

Otherwise, you are being unreasonable and selfish.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 08/05/2007 16:07

TC I'm obv far luckier than you- not only do i have 2 of the disbaled ones, get- wait for it- to fill in another DLA form this month!!!

YAy!!!!

Ah the pleasures I have, life is so, very very sweet

ThomCat · 08/05/2007 16:07

LittleSarah - I think I love you! What a great post. You're top class!

IcingOnTheCake · 08/05/2007 16:06

yes my op was harsh, maybe too harsh on my account but in my other posts i have never said i SHOULD have priority and i HAVE said that if i don't get a m&t space, i happily park elsewhere AND i have said i don't have a problem with disabled people in general. i think you may be stereotyping me abit here. that or you just wanna pick an arguement with someone, well thats fine i don't mind
