Trust Xenia to bring a sensible aspect

3andnomore, you're excused, you being a furriner and all .

Actually, it's embarassing how germans and dutch people often speak better English than native speakers!

3andnomore · 20/04/2007 14:42

So "Aitch" is the correct way...proper english and haitch is dialect/slang???
confused?
Cut me some slack please...afterall I am german, lol!

Judy1234 · 20/04/2007 14:31

Key class divider, by your aitches are you known. By all means stay on the divide with which you're comfortable but realise what others think.

3andnomore · 20/04/2007 14:29

OH god...we better never meet up, that is how I pronounce my Haitches....am sure that is how I learned it at school...hm...and we were meant to have learnt Oxford English...wouldn't surprise me if they got it wrong though!
The stuff they teach ys, lol....

DrDaddy · 20/04/2007 14:26

Haitch....Choo! (Bless you!)

Also, the correct pronounciation (pro-nuns-ee-ay-shun) of yesterday is meant to be "yesty", or so I heard....

Mind you, I live in Brissle in Wescunry. We all know crek waiter's peak down yer!!

ViscountessPetitLapin · 20/04/2007 14:18

My sister, who is a southerner born and bred, still says "newcassel" rather than "newcarsel", just because she went it uni there!

I used to love going on the Metro - "Mind the doors please!" sounds so much better in broad Geordie!

We have that battle too. Plus "up" and "oop".

Ahem, there is NO R in the "southern" pronunication of bath!! People always write it like that to make it look as if they are doing a phonetic rendition, but if you listen to the long A, that' all it is - a long vowel sound.

Lovecat · 20/04/2007 14:14

Weirdly, my mum is Irish and my dad South African, and they both say 'Filum'... so there's no hope for me.

Currently the battle in our house is whether dd will grow up saying 'bath' (good solid northern pronunciation) or 'barrth' (soft southern wimp pronunciation).

I hate Haitch too, btw...

ViscountessPetitLapin · 20/04/2007 14:06

I reckon you can get away with anything in an irish accent though, I love "filum" .

Mum got stopped for speeding in Ireland once; the Garda said to her "Now madame, you were doing tirty tree moiles an arr" and she got the giggles... he was not impressed.

"Haitch" is such a bugbear of mine...my DS has even started saying it because his teacher at school does!!!

UnquietDad · 20/04/2007 13:55

Another one is "ecksetera".

I've never forgiven that supposedly erudite user of the English Language, Steven Patrick Morrissey, for lapsing into it on "Sweet & Tender Hooligan". And on "A Rush And A Push" he sings "people who are uglier than you and I", which is also swful.

UnquietDad · 20/04/2007 13:52

Supremely irritating and you have every right to throw bricks at the TV. No excuse for it.

aquasea · 20/04/2007 13:52

OMG! my DH says haitch and it drives me crazy. I can't keep correcting him though or it might eventually be grounds for divorce! I have to just let it go. It's like nails down a blackboard for me though.

RedLorryYellowLorry · 20/04/2007 13:36

She tells me I don't speak properly. Err I wonder why Mum?

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 13:33

RedLorryYellowLorry · 20/04/2007 13:23

I say ARRRR and Mums says ORRR (like Oar of a boat). She has loads - Filum (Film), Lather (ladder) tree (three) Tree (tree), Shore = drain, Press = cupboard. I can't go on as I'm feeling mean and disloyal now

majorstress · 20/04/2007 13:23

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 13:20

majorstress · 20/04/2007 13:13

dd2 asked me how to spell HAITCH today. And when I try to tell her, AITCH, AY, I...she interrupts - no mummy, HAITCH.

I'm American. I can't pronounce HAITCH.

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 13:13

pinky's head explodes trying to guess how else you'd say R............. BOOM!

RedLorryYellowLorry · 20/04/2007 13:11

My mum is Irish and says Haitch, NeckLACE and Or for the letter R. She then moved to East London and had a family. We all talk proper so wots boverin u innit? I personally love people mixing up lend and borrow as in can you borrow me a tenner? Er No

Hopeitwontbebig · 20/04/2007 13:10

People who say everything like it's got a question mark at the end............ My DS1 does it occasionally grrrrrrrrrrrrr
