Neighbours sitting outside my window.

There's a courtyard outside my bedroom window, it belongs to my neighbours.

They've placed their table and chairs right outside my window (practically have their heads resting on it!)

The courtyard isn't huge but they could easily place it elsewhere. I've come home today and it's been a long day and I just wanted to lie on my bed and chill ... and he's out there smoking.

I don't feel I should have to sit in the dark to avoid being stared at. Aibu?

Ayleen you've resurrected a thread from 2017.........

Ayleen · 08/02/2025 15:29

Put something like flower pots that stink on your windowsill. Put your own chair out there if possible or put music on really loud with window open when they are out there.

hellohellohellooooooooo · 29/06/2017 20:52

Me too..... come on OP

Or we will come and sit outside your window too :D

FUNM · 29/06/2017 19:04

Dying to know what happened in the end OP

TheweewitchRoz · 30/05/2017 22:03

That's really shit Op & very inconsiderate of them. Have you checked your deeds that there isn't at least half a metre outside the window that belongs to you?

Otherwise you really need to have very loud sex / porn playing with the window wide open & passive aggressively 'talk' to a friend on the phone about the pervert with the table outside your window who does nothing but try to catch you coming out of the shower. Not ideal, I know, but unless you're going to speak to them directly or check re legal recourse for distance to your window, there isn't much you can do.

echt · 30/05/2017 22:03

YABU for not having spoken to them. They don't know it's problem for you. They are not mindreaders.

Most people would rather not be nuisance to others, but if you don't speak to them. you won't find out.

Delatron · 30/05/2017 21:54

Care not car!

Delatron · 30/05/2017 21:53

Poor you OP. This would drive me crazy. Did he see you? I'm trying to work out if they don't car it's your bedroom or don't know? You need a different tactic if they do know and don't care. I would open window and play loud music. They have a whole courtyard where they can sit...

diamantegal · 30/05/2017 21:43

Isn't it just that they want to sit outside and maximise their view of the courtyard? Move further in and they feel they're staring straight at a fence. Nice round and they're at an angle where they can stare straight in to your window. Whereas where they are, assuming they have their backs to you is probably the best option.

The cigarette smoke would piss me off though. But that's the same as pub gardens. I don't like it, but the law says it's not up to me.

OP, might be time to chat to your neighbours - they probably think they're doing their best!

Theycalledmethewildrose · 30/05/2017 21:32

Smoking is a class issue? Tell that to Kate Middleton :-)

JanetBrown2015 · 30/05/2017 20:48

It is the smoke that would be the killer for me. We went to center parcs and the neighbours smoked in their garden! I don't know abnyone who smoked - only 16% of people now do in the UK and it is very much a class issue. It was dreadful. We had to shut our house up and come in but they obviously had no idea how foul and awful it was. being English and only there for a week we just said nothing but it really was appalling air pollution.

Could you put a very very powerful fan on your window ledge with the window open blowing all the smoke in their direction and hopefully putting out their disgusting cigarettes at the same time.

bbcessex · 30/05/2017 20:08

You poor poor thing.
I think you're going to have to bite the bullet.. go out and ask them to move..

Tapandgo · 30/05/2017 19:20

.....not looked back, but If you own your property invest in the reflective glass option (you can watch them, they can't see you). If you rent, get the sticky film from B&Q, that obscures vision rather than light.

Alternatively - just have a word with them along the lines of recognising you know it's their courtyard, but that you can hear your conversation, smell your smoke etc........can you just move away from the window please, for everybody's privacy.

They obviously gave the sensitivity of a rhinoceros or there is another agenda going on.

MasuMara · 30/05/2017 18:55

ARGHHHH I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Come home ... looong day and exhausting weekend. Lying down in my bed and I look up and the male neighbour is practically sat there staring at me. Turned his head an inch and he would have been!

Literally our heads are the same height.

Now I can just hear a constant mumble. I've gone over and closed my blinds. They don't give a shit.

I want to cry. I can't even lay down on my bed without a face at my window, I can't live like this

Could you open your window to restrict their space there?

iMogster · 26/05/2017 21:46

Try and sell them some Forever Living products out of the window. Go on and on about how great aloe is.

inkypinkymalinky · 26/05/2017 21:08

Where is OP..... I want to know whats happened.... hope neighbours haven't bumped her off Shock

WeirdAndPissedOff · 26/05/2017 01:06

I was going to suggest a loud phonecall about disgusting/personal things, by a violin is brilliant! Perhaps throw in a recorder as well?

And for some reason the PP who suggested shaking off a rug out the window made me think of the cake scene from the 3rd American Pie film. Think that may be slightly overboard though! Blush

GuntyMcGee · 26/05/2017 00:15

Next time they're out there ask them
very politely if they'd mind not smoking next to your bedroom window. If you get no joy, cough loudly every time they do it, play loud music, make them feel as uncomfortable as they're making you feel.

Or squirt then with with a super soaker water pistol every time they light up.

Willow2017 · 25/05/2017 23:28

Play this on your phone or laptop and leave in bedroom with window open. If they ask just casually mention its to keep the rats away Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/05/2017 22:29

"Easy Street" on a loop (it drove Daryl doolally on The walking Dead )

Syrup, randomly swirled out of your window onto their table /chairs. Just a few drops, enough to make it sticky and unpleasant. Blame bees or something Wink

OpalTree · 25/05/2017 22:10

Violin! Brilliant!!

Theycalledmethewildrose · 25/05/2017 22:00

Oh I love the violin idea!!!!!!! Genius!!!!!

LakieLady · 25/05/2017 21:33

Buy a cheap violin and start "playing" it.

It'll make the most appalling noise and they'll soon move, and it won't take up as much space as a drum kit.

inkypinkymalinky · 25/05/2017 21:17

Oh I love the pretending to be a cat idea... hows it going OP... any progress?
