For being like Miranda in Sex and the City

I think i'm like Miranda in Sex and the City, even my sister told me i am. I don't get the whole "mum" world. People say i should make friends with other people with babies as i only have one friend with one. I find it a bit sickly if you like about the whole thing and am becoming more and more sinicle everyday. I can't stand the thought of sitting round with other peoples babies talking mums talk. On the other hand i wish i could change my attitude and be social with mums. I need some of you to try and help me do that as my attitude only makes me unhappy.

Miranda Carrie and Samantha where the only
normal ones although Charlotte was a sweetheart she would have been so insufferable as a partner how she pulled
rich men I don’t know lol

No way - I don't have ANY friends with babies, apart from one, whose wife recently had their baby.. We dont really talk about the babies though!

i'm like you - not into the whole 'Mum' scene!

I LOVE my DS, but i have NO interest in spending my time chatting about children! Sometimes i'll tell my friends little stories of funny things he has done, but thats about all. My time with him is when I focus on him - when i am not with him i actually find that talking about babies just makes me miss him [overly sentimental emoticon]

Never been to a mother and baby group.
Never taken DS to any sort of baby class thing.
He goes to a childminder and she takes him to play centres and things so he doesnt miss out, and I dont have to endure it!

I certainly wouldnt rule out a mother as a potential friend - I am very loud and outgoing and make friends a lot, often, and easily, but on the same hand I wouldn't go out and search for someone to befriend just because they were a mother.

You sound quite sad to me, and maybe a bit lonely? How about getting a babysitter and going out with your Parter for a night out, or get a local bar that you like and feel comfortable in - once you've started going a lot for a few weeks you'll find that other 'regulars' will start to talk to you and you'll make friends that way (doesnt have to be a bar BTW, a cafe works too)

I hope things get better for you.

I will keep going to under 1s cause its good for my baby to be around other babies.

kks I felt exactly the same as you did in those first few months belive me. I kept saying that I wanted to have 'normal' friends not just 'mums friends' and that I was bored talking about kids etc. I did know that probably all those other mums were thinking the same but for some stupid reason I did't really believe it. and yes going to playgroups might make it worse at times as you feel an outsider and is full of boring conversation at first.

Now, 12 months down the line I can see that those other mums with babies were exactly like me. They were there to make friends and talking about anything but babies but didn't know how to do it and were shy. and the ones with older kids - toddlers might often seem to be the ones in a 'clique'but in hindsight are just more relaxed about the whole thing, know more people and don't have to keep asking 'is she walking yet' to start a conversation.

persevere and give it time. It does take time to adjust to being a mum. I rephrase it: it does take time to learn to be a mum while still being yourself.

trust me it comes from one mum that never believed she would love to talk about her DD all day.

kks, is it just the mother and toddlers group that are getting you down, or are you feeling unhappy in general?

kks · 08/03/2007 17:22

Whereabout is England? Are you remote village or London / city?

KezzaG · 08/03/2007 16:38

the more you write the more it sounds like this is more than the HV annoying you about going to baby groups.

Are you happy at the moment? What would make you happy? Do you enjoy being with your baby or would you like some adult company in the day?

sorry I sound a bit Trisha but I hate it when someone sounds so miserable when they should be out and about and enjoying their baby.

Im off for a bit now so wont reply for a while.

kks · 08/03/2007 16:33

I did go out down town last month and i just didn't enjoy it. I found the whole seen boring and since having the baby my view of certain stuff have changed.

KezzaG · 08/03/2007 16:31

kks you sound really down. If you dont fancy the whole mum and baby thing fine, but if you have willing babysitters could you just arrange a night out so you can remember what it feels like to be you again?

TeeCee · 08/03/2007 16:30

Where in the world are you kks?

kks · 08/03/2007 16:29

Bored, yeah i am.

kks · 08/03/2007 16:28

TheDudAvocado · 08/03/2007 16:27

kks · 08/03/2007 16:26

yes i am boring but i never said mums were boring

Hmmm...I think you feel lonely and a bit scared so are being aggressive to cover it up. It's normal to feel as if your confidence is a bit dented when you have a baby and to find it hard to make new friends. Remember, you are a 'mum' - are you boring?
