WIBU to say that choirs full of people who can't sing (Rock Choir) are awful?

Honestly? I love singing, I think everyone should sing, and sing in groups - it's great. But why all the performances, crap choreography, shitty leaders who also can't sing and are presumably failed musicians. Why can't the ladies (and men) - very few of which can actually sing or understand rhythm, harmony, pitch... - just do it for fun and leave it at that? Why do they think they're amazing singers and their performances are great. From what I've seen they are largely outside, with shit backing music, crap acoustics making the whole thing even worse. AIBU?

This is what we were learning before Christmas. It was great fun! Looking forward to finishing it this term.

Strongmummy · 21/01/2017 22:45

What a horrible attitude you have OP! Music is there to be enjoyed by everyone. If they're enjoying themselves and are uplifted what's it got to do with you. I speak as s musician and opera singer and can pretty much guarantee my ability is far superior to yours. Stop sneering

Zhx3 · 21/01/2017 22:44

I joined Rock Choir in September. I had discovered the joy of singing through work (school) and am missing it since I left!

The members are very friendly and not the type of people I'd meet in my normal life. The director has endless enthusiasm and makes us laugh. You need to do a bit of work outside of the sessions but it's no way as onerous as playing in an orchestra, for example. I have found there to be a distinct lack of pretentious people, to be honest!

Music enhances my life. I love going to Rock Choir!

PeachBellini123 · 21/01/2017 22:44

Ouch. My MiL is part of one of these. It's been great for her self-confidence and she's made loads of friends.

I don't think she's under any illusions about her voice but it's made a positive difference to her life.

glitterazi · 21/01/2017 22:42

How sneery.....
I was thinking of joining. Am middle aged, can hold a tune - just, and thought it might be a fun evening. Something different to do, especially at this time of year when it's so easy to just be at home in front of the TV.
You've made me feel pretty old, boring and crap. Thanks.

Go for it! Don't let some internet windbag take the joy out of it for you. As you say, it's something different to do and it gets you out doing some fun.
I have a couple of friends who do it (separate choirs) and they love it.
Looks really sociable and great fun.

5foot5 · 21/01/2017 22:41

I have never heard of Rock Choir but I agree with SurreyBlah and others, your post sounds sneer and offensive. How dare women of a certain age go out and socialize and have fun like this Angry

glitterazi · 21/01/2017 22:40

the performances I've seen are pretty cringe-y. Like Glee on HRT...

Charming. Hmm
So, in your world, if you're over a certain age singing, you're a cringey embarassment and Glee type singing should be left to the youngsters.
As older people are all HRT'd up and should be at home sipping cocoa and doing age appropriate things, presumably?! Hmm

atheistmantis · 21/01/2017 22:38

I'm tone deaf and I'm in a rock choir, I love it. YABU.

SarahLinden · 21/01/2017 22:36

No, I don't work for them. I'm a member and very proud of it.

I just think a thread like this is so catty and uncalled for.

If you don't want to listen to a performance, then don't. No one's forcing you.

glitterazi · 21/01/2017 22:36

Oh wow, how rude. It's not for you, but others love it.
If it gets you out and it's something you enjoy doing, then why bring it down for people?
I've never been to Rock Choir, singing's not my thing, but I'd never slag off anyone's choices.
Find something that does interest you instead of being so miserable and joy sucking.

Twatternatter · 21/01/2017 22:35

But they DO just do it for fun.... It's lovely, uplifting and a great way of meeting new people in your community... What's not to like? No it's not professional or "good" but as long as they're enjoying it then so what!

And it's not so expensive, £10 a session is equivalent to most clubs, classes and groups

Katymac · 21/01/2017 22:34

There have been two mems on FB recently which express my feelings on the matter

I would give my eyeteeth to be in a choir!!

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 21/01/2017 22:34

Then don't watch them. Or listen. Move along. Piss off back home and leave others to enjoy themselves.

MintChocAddict · 21/01/2017 22:34

You sound lovely Hmm

FWIW a number of these 'tone deaf middle aged women' will have had negative experiences like bereavement, divorce, serious illness and the feel good factor of mass singing should be on the NHS in my opinion.
Performing in public is a confidence booster and at an age and stage where confidence can often take a battering I say good luck to them!
Mean spirited thread Sad

PleasantPheasant · 21/01/2017 22:32

Glee on HRT - love it.
SarahLinden, do you work for Rock Choir??

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 21/01/2017 22:32

I'd love to join a choir - I'm no Charlotte Church but I can hold a tune.

But round here there's the choice between Choral Societies, and Rock Choir. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. I don't want to sing po-faced Latin church music, but neither do I want to be rocking through the Queen back catalogue in a black teeshirt.

Isadora2007 · 21/01/2017 22:29

They let anyone in as it is so expensive so they're happy to take anyone regardless of ability.
YANBU as the performances I've seen are pretty cringe-y. Like Glee on HRT...

SarahLinden · 21/01/2017 22:29

YABU. Rock Choir gives tens of thousands of people (of all ages, men and women) a chance to become part of a community, to gain better mental and physical health through singing and to raise over a million pounds for charity last year.

No member is a professional singer - and no one pretends to be. It's all about having fun, supporting each other and making friends.

If that's not your thing, then fine but it's a strange way to react to a cultural movement which is so positive, in today's world of crisis, racism and misogyny.

Haven't you got anything more 'worthy' to get upset about?

PleasantPheasant · 21/01/2017 22:28

Waiting for the rock choristers to come out in arms...

I have nothing against singing for all, and some of the singers are very good. I'm not sure how they manage to keep on with a smile on their faces while the tone deaf ruin their performances actually. Good on them.
Don't think it's ageist or sexist. It's an observation. The choirs are predominantly female and most are "middle aged" to the older side of middle aged. The key part was "who can't sing", otherwise there would not be a problem!

OP posts:
WyfOfBathe · 21/01/2017 22:28

YANBU, there are groups which always perform at any local festival or event near me. There's always one or two good solos, and then the rest of the songs sound like a karaoke night.

I've never seen them fundraising either - but as far as I'm aware the ones around me aren't part of the rock choir brand, just local "Town Mixed Choir" or "X Social Group Choir".

HardToDeal · 21/01/2017 22:28

Ah, now, you see, I can't sing and I know it, so something like that appeals to me. But I wouldn't be labouring under the impression I was any good or that we were performance-worthy - it'd be the equivalent of singing into my hairbrush, but with the advantage of getting out of the house. If they perform in public that's a no for me!

Vandenessa · 21/01/2017 22:28

Middle age women are just scum.

Destinysdaughter · 21/01/2017 22:26

If I could sing I'd love to join a rock choir, think it would be great fun! Sadly I don't think I could bear to inflict my horrid voice on anyone...Grin

Vinorosso74 · 21/01/2017 22:23

One of my friends does Rock Choir and really enjoys it, I slightly cringe when she tells me some of the songs and choreography. She is 42, a good singer and in another more traditional choir too likes both but finds the Rock Choir more fun.
