Just wanted to rant Angry

Had 32wk consultant appointment today, sat in tiny waiting room with about 15 other people all crammed in and there's two women sat opposite DP and I chatting to each other, conversation goes something like "have you ever thought that your baby could be ginger" "oh god no don't say that, I wouldn't mind so much if it was a girl but ginger boys are just ugly, yuk"

DP was sat next to me and could hear the whole thing, he is ginger and so is our 14 month old DS. How rude can you get?!
DP wears a cap constantly when he's out because he got teased in school about it.

What difference does it make what colour hair you have? It's just a colour the same as brown, blonde, black are colours! Thinking about it now it's really making my blood boil and if I could turn back time I wish I'd have said something to them instead of staying quiet because I didn't want to cause an argument.
Idiots Sad

Next time this happens, have some sexy Ron Weasley photos ready to show them how desirable ginger men are.

(Yes, there is a BIG Ron Weasley fan base....)

Notagainmun · 31/10/2015 07:49

Flaming spellchecker. Badgers

Notagainmun · 31/10/2015 07:48

My DH and both DS are different shades of ginger and gorgeous. None of them were teased in school any more than any other child. Kids will always fined something in others to take the piss at. Having been bullied in school myself I armed by sons with comebacks and techniques to (hopefully) avoid being bullied themselves.

DH is going grey in a very sexy way. He is just sort of fading from ginger to grey all over. Unlike his mates who have patches of grey and look like bashers ;)

Can't believe we are on page 9 of this thread and no one (unless i have missed it) has mentioned Max Martini.

I have had so many men fall at my feet and the one thing they all had in common was the reason why and that because of my long flowing ginger locks. Both my ex and my husband said the first thing they noticed about me was my hair and how they fell for me just on that alone. My brother is exactly the same he has women chuck themselves at him because of his gorgeous ginger hair. Unfortunately neither of us have ginger haired kids which is really sad, my son was born a deep auburn but it went bright blonde after 6 months. I still love him though Halloween Wink
I absolutely love my hair and ginger hair in general it's so vibrant and I especially love men with long ginger hair Halloween Grin

daisyswirl · 31/10/2015 07:15

My eldest son has the most gorgeous fiery red hair and green eyes. He hated his hair colour when younger and was bullied for it. I told him these brainless nomarks were just jealous because they looked ordinary. Hes never had any problems getting girlfriends because hes a lovely handsome man. It helped with the bullies that he grew into a 6ft 3 strapping lad though! Grin

Flashbangandgone · 31/10/2015 07:03

Lots adamant that anti-ginger comments aren't racist... Legally they're right, but surely having a prejudice against someone because of their hair colour is hardly different from having a prejudice based on skin colour. They are equally wrong, it's just that skin colour has (rightly) been made socially unacceptable as racism.

But actually, ginger hair is a racial characteristic (eg Celts) so I think there's a good case for recognising this as racist too.

ahbollocks · 31/10/2015 07:01

Ginger is gorgeous. I work with a girl who has the most gorgeous ginger hair, nearly all my exs have been ginger and handsome

It's a shame anyone thinks that way

InternationalEspionage · 31/10/2015 06:58

Love ginger. Particularly with pale Celtic skin. This anti-ginge thing is British, weird, and aesthetically wrong IMHO. I find ignorance like this regarding any aspect of personal appearance quite sinister and disturbing actually.

Also, gingies can wear blues, greens, purples etc and look almost breathtakingly stunning, in a way that is almost impossible to replicate in blondes and brunettes.

Just my opinion.

ThursdayLastWeek · 31/10/2015 06:57

Both myself and my DS have auburn/strawberry blonde hair. People love to reassure me that we're not really ginger.

The thing is OP, if you're still here, is to try and make sure your son doesn't become ashamed or his hair like his own father is.

At school people attempted to pick in me for my hair colour, but I didn't give a shit, so it didn't work Grin. I hope you're able to give your children a similar type of confidence to know idiots for what the are.

tobysmum77 · 31/10/2015 06:44

I find it Confused that people are just so bizarrely rude. I had never even noticed before that Harry has red hair, a friend and one of her ds's also have red hair and it didn't register with me until she pointed it out. I would just love luscious thick hair whatever the colour Smile

Surely the only possible negative is the annual sun cream bill?

If some twat wants to bully you they can always find something regardless of hair colour etc.

allnewredfairy · 31/10/2015 06:31

I'm ginger and my daughers are ginger. Although I've never encountered any teasing or bullying I was pleased that sons got the mousy brown hair. I do feel that gingers can look pasty but as women we can use makeup to look less...ethereal. (My eyes look like wee holes in the snow withouht mascara)

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 31/10/2015 03:21

Well I'm climbing over several thousand non-ginger blokes to get to the divine Damien, so it think we can safely say the stupid woman is wrong.

Plus I personally would love to have been born with red hair.

MikeSpilligan · 31/10/2015 02:39

Oh hello flowersandshit, how lovely to see you again- I have two beautiful ginger dc who I bf IN PUBLIC Shock - how do you like THAT?!

mathanxiety · 31/10/2015 02:33

In the US otoh, being Irish is considered something to be congratulated about. There is a corresponding lack of anti-red sentiment. It would be interesting to see if redheads are treated badly in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

mathanxiety · 31/10/2015 02:31

It is racism Trollkonor.

What you encountered was anti Irish prejudice. It doesn't matter that your family has no Irish heritage. Red hair is assumed to be Irish, and that is fair game in Britain.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 02:14

More power to Ed Sheeran but he's no matinee idol. Not that he needs to be! But when people say he's gorgeous I do think.................no.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 02:09

Can't wait for the beard fashion to die tho. Come back squeaky clean Ed as in thinking out loud vid or puppet Ed, or Lego Ed, or class a Ed, etc lol
Sorry xxxxx

JassyRadlett · 31/10/2015 02:08

Gabilan, funnily enough I was just about to post in response to the more goady posters that being thick as mince isn't an ideal state of affairs, but they seem to be coping with it admirably. But then I reflected that it would probably get me deleted.

I'm with Pacific. I'm an immigrant and the English thing about ginger hair is both bizarre and frankly pretty pathetic.

Mermaidhair · 31/10/2015 02:08

I don't understand why people don't like ginger hair. I'm wondering if it is because it is more unusual and there is jealousy? I think it is gorgeous and sexy.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 02:04

Hey worra why does this situation not represent where you live?
Pretty sure it would more than most, e.g. in my local catholic primary in year 2 about 70% of the children are ginger.
I presume ginger bashing if it takes place would be regarded as a bit ridiculous given the majority are ginger.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 01:59

Irishdad, holy shit do not diss the glory of Ed sheeran. OK a lot of people may look past his amazing hair and focus on his talent but the point is that he is all round to die for!
I accept earlier post saying Mick hucknall, ugly ginge and would be still ugly with dark hair so I don't reckon all gingers are good looking for the sake of it. Good voice but still never good looking.
But hey Ed, check out photograph video and basically all his others. He is hugely talented with good looks on his side.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 01:53

This fella is my favourite ginger man.

Skiptonlass · 31/10/2015 01:48

LOVE red hair. Love it. Pale, pasty and red headed is absolutely my thing. I'm auburn and dh is blonde - lots of red heads in my family, I was secretly hoping ds would be an adorable little day walker (he's not, alas.)

Ignore the idiots op. I bet your son is gorgeous.

(Waves ginger pride flag...)

trollkonor · 31/10/2015 01:19

It isn't racism, from my south of UK point of view. I'm not saying it can't be very damaging or there isn't history to the hatred, in some cases maybe tnere is an argument? I didnt understand the depth of hatred until the internet and hearing shit from those mentioned in the OP.

I grew up in the south knowing that I was ugly but not just because of my hair. My hair is brown with a reddish tint. I have freckles and glasses, even worse I had to wear an eye patch for a while, my red hair tint didnt help. It wasn't until I looked back on childhood photos that it dawned on me that I wasn't a hideous troll and the girls with the straight blond hair were in no sense better than me. Not that anyone should be judged on physical looks. In my late teens I started to get attention despite the odd person wanting to remind me I was a red haired freckled freak. I dont naturally fancy blond guys but I wouldnt go out of my way to insult them, or completely discount someone who had blond hair.

One of my sons seems to have an all year all round tan, blond hair and a few frecles. The other brighter red hair, paler skin, many freckles, but like me he goes dark and freckly quickly
.
After looking back through family trees on both sides of my family we are mostly, german and or jewish immigrants pre second world war, with the odd scot and northern english and a handful of southern english thrown in. Highly likely more eastern European than modern day germany.

My son with the paler skin and redder hair seemed like fair game from all segments of his former very multi cultural secondary school. Its like society has said yes its fine to taunt him day in day out. Yes he had to prove he has no soul to many sub cultures in that school. I don't think it would have been any better in a less multi cultural school. Luckily for him he is on the taller side of average for his age and bites back. I don't think it has or will affect either of us long term like racism. My other golden skinned son, blond haired son just hasnt go through the same.
