"Ginger boys are just ugly"

Just wanted to rant Angry

Had 32wk consultant appointment today, sat in tiny waiting room with about 15 other people all crammed in and there's two women sat opposite DP and I chatting to each other, conversation goes something like "have you ever thought that your baby could be ginger" "oh god no don't say that, I wouldn't mind so much if it was a girl but ginger boys are just ugly, yuk"

DP was sat next to me and could hear the whole thing, he is ginger and so is our 14 month old DS. How rude can you get?!
DP wears a cap constantly when he's out because he got teased in school about it.

What difference does it make what colour hair you have? It's just a colour the same as brown, blonde, black are colours! Thinking about it now it's really making my blood boil and if I could turn back time I wish I'd have said something to them instead of staying quiet because I didn't want to cause an argument.
Idiots Sad

I well aware that ds has been patronised for his hair colour

but by far he gets far more compliments, it is quite an unusual colour its very golden. a girl of about 14 came up to us the other day and said look same hair ds was not impressed he does not want to look like a girl Grin

My friend married a ginger man and was desperate to have ginger babies. Her two ginger boys are so gorgeous it's not true. I love their ginger curls.

I do not understand why people feel free to slag off someone else's natural hair colour. It's daft, imagine saying 'I don't find blond hair attractive' or 'I don't find brown hair attractive'. It's far to broad a category. There are ugly people who happen to be ginger and there are beautiful people who happen to be ginger.

Amazed to discover Ewan McGregor is considered ginger though, I think that means I am as well.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 30/10/2015 23:22

Oh god, OP that woman is mad. There are so many gorgeous ginger boys and men out there. It's a totally ridiculous thing to say.

When I was a teen I had an absolute obsession with a boy with red hair I used to see at the swimming pool every week. He was so gorgeous - and did fabulous dives off the high board Grin

But there's no denying it that there seem to be a large proportion of twats out there that see it as something to pick on. I saw a very good program on the BBC about people with red hair - they covered various things, eg. they got a top advertising company to design an ad to improve the profile of red hair. They came up with "Winner : Loser"

Winner: Winston Churchill vs Loser: Hitler

Winner: Boris Becker vs Loser: Tim Henman

But you only have to look at people like Prince Harry, Damian Lewis, Eddie Redmayne to know that 'gingerism' is only perpetuated by utter twats.

no not the same as racism but the same sort of ignorant hatred is there, the sort of hatred that lacks any sort of intelligence. In that sense it is the same.

I remember in primary school my teacher showing us a video a lady called Jane Elliot in America, and her blue eyes/brown eyes test to demonstrate racism or just plain discrimination of any sort. I was young but I recall thinking this is heart wrenching stuff, and why would any human treat someone different because they had blue eyes as opposed to brown? Of course it was to demonstrate the sort of unfair treatment African black Americans received at the time i.e segregation.

Well the same reasoning can be applied to the idiots who seem to hate ginger hair. Not liking particular hair colour or eye colour is one thing but despising it, and mocking those who have it now that stinks of ignorance and stupidity at its highest level.

I certainly wouldn't class it as racist, but many of the vile comments about red hair I've heard since I've lived in the UK are definitely associated implicitly with anti-Irishness, like the incredible prejudice against certain Irish male names you get on the Mn baby names forum. I don't think the two prejudices are unassociated.

(Possibly anti-Scottishness, too, but as an Irish person (though without red hair) I heard less of that.)

funny so many folks against red but its a really popular colour when women go grey or in their teens they all want to dye it red to stand out ironic huh

I don't think dyed hair and naturally ginger hair are the same really.

I think as a PP said, it's often the pale skin, freckles, ginger eyelashes and eyebrows that accompany natural hair that some people don't like.

I don't know why people have to be rude about it though...it's just a bloody hair colour.

Mind you, I don't know why some people get so 'gushy' over it either because again...it's just a bloody hair colour.

Not even slightly ugly!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 30/10/2015 23:18

Just need to add Michael Fassbender among the hot gingers.

Onedayinthesun · 30/10/2015 23:17

OP they were rude and ignorant and I too would have been so angry.

My DD is a ginge and has grown into a beautiful, confident teenager who loves her hair and is comfortable in her pale skin Smile

Moths to a flame is my experience when it comes to people complimenting her on her hair.

Oh and Ginger boys are NOT ugly! What vile people to have a conversation like that anyway. Dismiss them, don't waste your energy on them.

mudandmayhem01 · 30/10/2015 23:17

It is not unreasonable to have a type but is horrible to declare everyone with a particular skin/ hair type ugly. Good call on the xenophobia rather than racism though.

So beautiful!

HairyLittleCarrot · 30/10/2015 23:15

Hey shit:
I bet a lot of the people who secretly slag off red haired people are actually quite unattractive themselves.

Of course, it can't possibly be the fact that I just think carrot ginger hair IS ugly.

Well yeah, possibly, but my money's on theory number one in your case.

I don't like it, personally. You might, others might, I don't. What is wrong with that?!

What's wrong with that is that you expressed that opinion to another person, you muppet.

Gabilan · 30/10/2015 23:14

My usual response to this kind of comment is along the lines of "well it's better than being a boring, brown-haired cunt". Or, if I'm feeling less imaginative, I tell them to fuck off. As a child, I just hit them but apparently if you do that as an adult you can get into trouble.

Being a redhead does influence my outlook on life. Mainly I've realised that an awful lot of people are dicks.

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 30/10/2015 23:12

I cannot believe that people think it's ok to say things like that. Certain colourings may not be to everyone's taste (not so keen on blond looks myself) but that kind of negativity is appalling. And it legitimises the bullying that sadly does happen disproportionately to redheads.

Look at those gorgeous pictures scatter posted! How could anyone not think they're beautiful?

HopefulAnxiety · 30/10/2015 23:12

Ginger hair is not equivalent to being black, no, and anti-gingerness isn't racism.

However anti-gingerness is rooted in anti-Scottish and anti-Irish prejudice in England, so it is xenophobic.

SurlyCue · 30/10/2015 23:12

It was never apparent to me until secondary school that ginger hair was anything other than a hair colour exactly the same as brown, blonde and black. Oh and grey! My primary school class had 5/6 that i can think of with red/ginger hair. It was just hair! Nobody made any mention of it.

AdjustableWench · 30/10/2015 23:11

I have three kids and NONE of them are ginger Sad. I blame my DH for his lack of ginger genes despite having Scottish ancestry. Ginger (of all hues) is beautiful!

FlowersAndShit · 30/10/2015 23:10

I opened this thread to see how many posts it would be before someone said it was racist. 7, if anyone's interested.

Gingerist/Gingerism? Grin

Haha August, I'm going to be like one of those women who keeps trying until they get the desired gender - but only for a ginger baby!

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 30/10/2015 23:06

I had a mate with long ginger dreads and a ginger beard and he was smoking hot.

Seriously. Yum.
