One that could not be down to cold reading. For example, giving out very specific details such as exact dates, unusual names, basically precise facts that cannot be fished for or guessed and are not vague?

As an atheist (and scientist), I am reasonably OK with the evidence that prayer works to improve medical outcomes.

Of course, I don't believe that the mechanism is god answering those prayers.

Here's the other side of the coin to that last link.

Hakluyt · 14/05/2015 17:10

" The thing is with atheists they'll argue till the cows come home and have an answer for everything."

But that's the point- I don't have an answer for everything. Because nobody does!

Seriously Rose, why do you think your Australian doctor man didn't go straight to the most eminent cardiologist he could find and get him to review the records- because if it really is a medical miracle, it would change the world forever. Forever. But instead he runs a home made website with citations from other Christians- and sells hand crafted pens.

*Without any beliefs your lives are meaningless, I actually feel sorry for you.

How arrogant!!!

TTWK · 14/05/2015 16:54

There are about 25000 gods throughout human history, and Roseforarose is an atheist in respect of 24999 of them. Zeus, Thor, Aztec sun gods, the Nigerian giant ant god, she rejects them all as total nonsense. I just believe in 1 less god than she does.

Roseforarose · 14/05/2015 16:53

Oh just forget it. The thing is with atheists they'll argue till the cows come home and have an answer for everything. So easy isn't it with all the odds in your favour., when you say you'll only believe with proof. Just keep coming out with all the usual "people suffering, disasters, earthquakes, so easy to blame God. Who do you thank for all the good things in your life.
Without any beliefs your lives are meaningless, I actually feel sorry for you.

Hakluyt · 14/05/2015 16:51

Incidentally, you do know that the Bible has some pretty strong things to say about psychics, don't you?

Hakluyt · 14/05/2015 16:50

Rose- I'n not going to deny your link. But I'm also not going to belive it actually happened that way just because he said it did. I would need an independent medical person to look at all the records and see what they thought. You would have thought he would too...............

www.nytimes.com/2006/03/31/health/31pray.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

This is a link to a NY Times article on actual medical research studies showing no difference between patients prayed for and patients not prayed for in a controlled trial. In fact, one study showed patients who knew they were being prayed for had more post-surgery complications - some of the research suggested they may have had a form of 'performance anxiety'.

Lipsync · 14/05/2015 16:37

Rose, is the best you can muster in terms of evidence for divine existence really some internet guy's random blog claiming he was healed of his illness because his lawyer friend spent two hours face to face with God on his behalf and God said he was healed? Nothing else, throughout all the centuries of Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc?

Wouldn't it be liberating to recognise that Christianity is one meaning-making myth among others - the dying and rising again God figure recurs again and again in Greek/Egyptian/Norse myth, to mention only a few - and let yourself off the theological conundrum of how to justify human suffering and apparent divine indifference to it? Because the 'free will causes human suffering so God sent his only son etc etc' argument doesn't work.

And even if we accept for a moment that blogger man was actually healed by God following an intensive prayer session by his friend, why him, and why not any dying child whose parent hurls desperate prayers at any deity they think will listen? Was the lawyer friend particularly persuasive?

TTWK .it wasn't an effort for God, so why was someone saying its time he put some effort in. I used this as an example as earthly effort. Just read the above and I'll await all the so predictable denials.

TTWK · 14/05/2015 16:20

Why would anything be an effort for god? He's god!

Could god make a boulder that was too heavy for him to carry? (that normally confuses the omnipotent god brigade?)

Roseforarose · 14/05/2015 16:18

Who do you want to spend eternity with then mengog.....just give over with your blaming God for the worlds suffering.

Roseforarose · 14/05/2015 16:13

was creating the world a lot of effort for god? He's god. I've never understood why it took him 6 days. Why didn't he just click his fingers and pow, we have a world
I made the point of the creation of the universe because someone said "it's time he put some effort in" or words to that effect. I mentioned the universe as an example of effort. If that's not seen as effort I don't know what is. What else would that poster like to see him do?
Mengog why do say he causes all the suffering? I'd say most of it was caused by man. But apart from that if as you say he causes all the suffering, who is responsible for all the joy and beauty. You can't have it all ways and twist it to suit yourself.

TTWK · 14/05/2015 15:44

It's like saying you want him to turn the sky purple. He's not a circus performer

Well he used to be, up to a couple of thousand years ago. Tricks galore then. Kept everyone entertained That parting of the Red Sea would have been great to see, although closing it up again on thousands of Egyptian soldiers, who would have been teenage conscripts, was a bit mean.

But he seems to have given all that up, which is a shame now we all have phones with cameras and video facilities.

Mengog · 14/05/2015 15:44

There are a number of reasons why, internally, someone may have healed, all perfectly reasonable explanations. Growing a new limb, would be a miracle, which is why it never happens.

He's not a circus performer, as in my opinion, he's not real, but if he is then he will understand my non-belief.

In all honesty a god who created a world with so much suffering definitely isn't one I want to spend eternity with.

Hakluyt · 14/05/2015 15:38

"Btwmengog internal healings have been verified many times by doctors"

No they haven't. I'm really sorry, Rose, but they just haven't

And, seriously, do you never wonder why miraculous cures are always of things which are difficult to diagnose or which spontaneously go into remission? Or which only have anecdotal accounts? If a cure is miraculous then it's miraculous. Why is growing a leg any more of a circus performance than shrinking a tumour?

TTWK · 14/05/2015 15:31

Why was creating the world a lot of effort for god? He's god. I've never understood why it took him 6 days. Why didn't he just click his fingers and pow, we have a world.

And having taken 6 days, he needs time of to rest??? He's meant to be god. The idea of god taking a break because he's being overdoing it a bit makes me think there must be a limit to his abilities, which isn't very godlike at all.

Roseforarose · 14/05/2015 15:17

It all depends on what you believe. In my beliefs he's already put a hell of a lot of effort in, in creating the world. He also let his only Son die on the cross for us.
If people start to take the piss out of my beliefs that says more about you than me.
Btwmengog internal healings have been verified many times by doctors. Don't look for things that you think he should do. Why are you so determined to look for things to suit your satisfaction. God works in his way, it's arrogant to think he should do things to conform to our own understandings. It's like saying you want him to turn the sky purple. He's not a circus performer.

TTWK · 14/05/2015 15:11

Yes, these miracle cures are always disappearing tumours and the like.
Even a bloody newt can regrow severed limbs, and that's pondlife. Surely God to grant that ability to at least one poor sod with a missing limb.

Mengog · 14/05/2015 15:04

I know many people who say praying for someone has healed them.

The proof I would need isn't a man who can't walk, walking. It would be a man with no legs having his legs regrow or arms regrow. That would be a miracle. Yet for some reason it's always internal issues that can't be verified.

fackinell · 14/05/2015 14:56

Interesting reading from a religious point of view. Thank you for that, Rose. I'm open to all systems of belief as I certainly don't know everything. I don't go to church but I certainly believe that beings of a much higher consciousness than us exist.

I live my life in the way many do as Christians. I try to be kind, gracious, charitable and tolerant. I do this because it's a good way to be but I may have some previous religious experience to validate the way I live. I do also pray if I feel I need support. I'm definitely not a 'non believer.' I am a spiritualist but when it comes to traditional religion I guess I'm more on the agnostic side.

Religion used in the way it was intended can make a society a much richer place. I'm sure it was never meant as a set of rules to do harm or control a society, that IMO is extremism. There is no harm in regular church goers going about their normal business and worshipping.

Unfortunately there are people who like to bullshit other's beliefs and consider themselves superior in the process.

KidLorneRoll · 14/05/2015 14:46

Why not, Rose? If God wanted to make believers of us all, why can't he put some effort in? If he came down and did a miracle or two I'd believe the heck out of him then.

TTWK · 14/05/2015 14:45

If atheists base their conviction that there is no God on lack of evidence , well I think they'll have a long wait. What sort of evidence do you expect

A great big finger coming out of the sky and a booming voice saying "I am god".

That would do for me, and Richard Dawkins too I expect. And why not? He's god after all. Why the big game of hide and seek?

Roseforarose · 14/05/2015 14:37

If atheists base their conviction that there is no God on lack of evidence , well I think they'll have a long wait. What sort of evidence do you expect. God and his angels looking down from a fluffy white cloud? If it was that easy we might as well all be in heaven now.
