We have a "gross" toilet and everyone refuses to use it

So how does it end up in such a state??

We have 3 bogs in our house - one downstairs, one en-suite and the main bathroom. The main bathroom was decorated when we first moved in to a "nautical" scene - pastel blue, sea shell canvas, blue stripey bath mats a seagull and fishing boat ornament on the window ledge.

I loved it.

A year later the carpet is stained with god knows what, the bathmats are stained and stink (no matter how often I wash them), the walls are sprayed with piss and the toilet is full of shit stains and just reeks. No matter how often I bleach and scrub it it ALWAYS looks like this within an hour of cleaning.

Now, DP refuses to use the "shit hole room" and so do the kids. So if nobody uses it - how the fuck is it in such a state????? It's ridiculous. The whole rooms stinks like a blokes pub toilet.

Get rid of the carpet. Carpets have NO PLACE in a bathroom. Of COURSE it stinks, if it's permanently impregnated with the urine. What did you expect? Confused

if your bathmats and loo mats smell you are either not washing them often enough or not washing them hot enough.

If you loo is permanently caked in shit you need to teach your family to use the loo brush after them.

If the walls and the loo seats are permanently splashed with wee you need to teach your family to be more careful and to clean up after themselves.

It's not that difficult to grasp, really. Confused

Honestly, an antibacterial wipe around the rim and the seat once a day,(about 45 seconds) a good go with the loo brush with some bleach down the bowl once a day, (about 45 seconds) a clean mat every other day and a weekly spray and wipedown of the wall (about 45 seconds) - how hard can it be? Confused

Royalsighness · 29/12/2014 18:33

Actually sitting here CRYING!!!! At this thread and the responses!!! Get them all in there with a brush and some bleach and say there's a shitting ban unless they use that toilet! As for the bathroom fabrics, bin them, bin anything that can't be bleached!

BertieBotts · 29/12/2014 18:27

Coke works for taking grime off old keys and coins too. Anything grained on like that.

foreverondiet · 29/12/2014 18:11

Carpet in bathroom? No wonder its vile. Need to tile the walls around the toilet and also the floor. Throw away bath mats and buy new and wash - regularly. My 8 year old DS1 often in the night just wees everywhere - walls and floor - so end up cleaning around toilet every day.

chopinbabe · 29/12/2014 17:45

Does cola work? I thought its only other use was for cooking a ham!

Discopanda · 29/12/2014 17:21

Get the cheapest bottle of cola you can and chuck it down your loo, it'll clean it right out. And for the love of God get rid of the carpets.

OriginalGreenGiant · 29/12/2014 16:41

Sorry op but that's rank. There's just no excuse.

I have two little boys and one big boy (dh) all of whom appear to have trouble aiming.

My bathroom isn't like that. DH cleans up after himself if his aim goes wrong. The kids give the seat a quick wipe but I generally give the toilet, nearby wall and floor a wipe with antibacterial wipes before bed if needed. Get rid of your carpet and start cleaning more.

Piss covered walls and a shit stained toilet with mats that pong just doesn't happen if you're/DH are cleaning enough.

BingBongMerrilyOnHigh · 29/12/2014 16:33

We have carpet in our bathroom. Same carpet for over 6 years. It's still fine. This is because we don't wee all over the place. I also cover the floor by the bath and in front of the toilet, with appropriate rugs, which are periodically replaced.

Mind you, I've no idea what the landlord was doing, carpeting it in the first place, but that's another story...

ithoughtofitfirst · 29/12/2014 16:22

I recently peed on the bathroom floor by accident.

You can have that one for free MN.

You're welcome.

Theoretician · 29/12/2014 10:39

I had a cream carpet on the bathroom floor in a new-build flat, that I lived in on my own. Despite being a man, it still looked new(ish) ten years later when I left. I like clean but I don't like cleaning, so I tend to avoid making a mess.

Having said that, when I moved into my current flat, I replaced carpet in both bathrooms with single sheets of vinyl. The existing carpets were (a) grotty and (b) coral pink. Also the floors would be damaged by water, so wanted something completely waterproof, with tiles (ceramic or vinyl) there could potentially have been gaps for water to get through.

Vinyl off a roll is probably the cheapest (and least posh) flooring you can get, but I think it is the best thing for bathrooms. (Actually, given the variety of choice available, I think it's also the best option for improving the look of a bathroom.)

Actually, this reminds me. In my first job, in the headquarters of a megacorp, a purpose-built building far posher than anything I've encountered in London, the toilets had ankle-deep long-pile carpeting. The designer-lighting was so dim that you could barely see your hand in front of your face, so it's possible the sense of luxury would have been dispelled if you could actually see the state of the carpets.

83yr old client won the Star Prize at her Club's Christmas Bingo, a candy pink and blue striped Bathroom Set, comprising bathmat, pedestal mat, toilet seat cover and ta-da!, an elasticated cover to fit round the lav sit-upon part. Height of grossosity, that last one. (Like my new word?) bloody thrilled with it, she is.

Morloth · 29/12/2014 10:16

I live with three males.

No wee on the floor, no skids in the loo.

It is because they don't expect someone else to clean up after them. THAT is your problem.

donkir · 29/12/2014 10:07

I had carpet in my bathroom because that's all I could afford.
My ds also had trouble aiming due to medical condition that needed corrective surgery.
Although the carpet looked clean when we came to redo bathroom it had seeped through to the floorboards. All of which were rotten and stinking and needed replacing.

FatJerseyPostXmasSpud · 29/12/2014 09:54

Boark. Just.....boark.

gazouille · 29/12/2014 09:48

We use a bath mat but only near the bath when we have baths. I find lino manky too; it's tiles all the way from bitter experience. Lino and male urine are not even competitors. Op is allowed to have a theme if she likes (although I wouldn't) but there are many grannies with hideous carpeted fluffy furry loos who manage to keep their avocado toilet bowls and pink tiles walls pristine. OP do you have a bathroom cleaning phobia? It is worth getting a cleaner for an hour a week just to keep on top of the three bathrooms - first clean would have to be a post tenancy one though lol.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 29/12/2014 09:43

It's not just piss; water from showers and steam from hot baths can also give carpets a damp smell.

JudgeJudyKicksAss · 29/12/2014 09:31

I haven't read the whole thread so this may have been suggested before.

We had the exact same problem, we have 3 DS and the main bathroom was carpeted when we moved in. Despite fairly regular cleaning, air freshener, reminders to the boys to wee in the toilet, carpet cleaning etc the smell problem continued.

One day I came home from work, the central heating had been on all day, and the smell of piss hit me as I walked through the door, it was disgusting. Enough was enough and I ragged the carpet up off the floor to discover the pee had soaked through the carpet and spread/soaked by about a foot and a half diameter into the floor boards. The stench was horrendous and there must have been a about 2 years of pee there, so you can imagine how bad it was.
Result: my hubby has put new floor boards in, vinyl ( well sealed around pedestal) has gone down and I was an absolute Toilet Tyrant for about 3 weeks afterwards making sure that if the boys "spilled" they cleaned it up immediately (turned out it was my hubby and the oldest boy with the messiest habits).

Vinyl remnants can be had from a carpet shop for around £50, and ply wood for new flooring is around £20. Good luck!

Salmotrutta · 29/12/2014 09:26

My MIL has one of those furry loo lid covers ShockShock

Salmotrutta · 29/12/2014 09:24

Never mind the pee!

I'm more interested in the fact that the loo seems to have indelible excrement stains.

Is the enamel surface damaged thus causing permanent staining?

Carrierpenguin · 29/12/2014 09:20

I'm not a hygiene weirdo but I don't think carpet is a good idea in a bathroom, it gets damp from all the water and then smells. Tiles and a bath mat for stepping onto from the bath would be a better idea.

Unescorted · 29/12/2014 09:14

Just a thought - if they are all saying they don't use it it could be damp. Has a very similar smell to piss when the backing on the carpet starts degrading.

For years we thought my gran pissed in the hall.... until she died and we realised it was the damp carpet when we stripped it out.

CatsClaus · 29/12/2014 09:08

what is it with all this devil may care pissing everywhere?? Make the pissy mingers clean it up!!

god knows I am not house proud but I seem to have managed never to have a pissreeking toilet.

Brummiegirl15 · 29/12/2014 09:03

I've just moved into a lovely sparkling new build. Which came carpeted - how lovely.

But it also included carpet in the downstairs loo!! FFS! Cheap money grabbing builders deciding it's cheaper just to carpet everywhere rather than put tiles in bathroom.

Ripping up the carpet is our first job!

EmilyGilmore · 29/12/2014 01:26

Do people not teach their sons to wee carefully? DS is 4 and knows to hold his willie and point directly into the bowl - and how to shake the drips at the end. I don't remember my father or brothers having trouble with it either.

EmilyGilmore · 29/12/2014 01:24

My MIL has carpet everywhere. Bathrooms AND kitchen. It's so weird and quite grim.
