Names with strange spellings

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

Some names have different spellings depending on its origin though, and the parents may have personal reasons for choosing an unusual spelling.

I would have loved to give my dcs traditional gaelic names with gaelic spellings as a connection to their Irish roots but most English people have enough trouble pronouncing them never mind spelling them.

Made up spellings though, just make my teeth itch. I actually know a Thomas spelt Tomasz!

Marc (with a c) is the french way of how it is spelt, and where the name originates from.

Siobhan. I went to school with a chevonne and went through the next 15 years without coming across another. I read the Rebus books where his partner is Siobhan and pronounced it as it read. Si-o-ban. It wasn't until I seem Rebus on tv I realised that was the proper way to spell it and I was a Dick.

I've taught a Sharn - mum couldn't spell Sian and didn't bother looking it up. Personal favourite was Demi-Adidas, closely followed by Arry.

Jayne is a normal way of spelling that name.

Not bothered about outing myself tbh.

My names siobhan, I bloody hate it! It's so annoying to have to spell it out all the time. Even more annoying as I have an even more odd last name.

Ps- made up names are utterly pathetic- like people consider their dc as cute little toys they can mess about with and not actual people who have to get lives and jobs.

You used the normal spelling, if someone makes up spelling for their kid's name they should be prepared for the fact people will constantly misspell it.

I know a Jessycaugh and a Ysabella.

Ysabella doesn't even make sense! You wouldn't pronounce it the same way.

Why would you worry about it, op? If people choose to deviate from the more usual way of spelling a name, they can hardly expect you to be divinely inspired, can they?

If I posted the spelling of my original birth name I would immediately out myself as I am the only person I have ever heard of with that spelling, and google seems to agree with me Confused

My DD has a very commom name but people still spell it several different ways. My friend called her DS Jon I always why not the common way given that she was a teacher.
