Names with strange spellings

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

Which name do you reckon has the most variations on spelling?

Madison/Madyson/Maddison/Madisson are all ones I know.

Jamie/Jamee/Jayme/Jayime are all ones I know. I wonder if there is actually a singular name that has the most variations?

Tomasz is most certainly polish Blackholes my polish grandad would agree.
and I pretty sure lurking ysabella is spanish (Ysabel definatly is)

The DDs have a friend called Rachael. I get it wrong every time as I spent 7 years in the same form as a Rachel.

Cathryn/Catherine/Kathryn/Katherine I've met them all and Jayne/Jane.

And of course there is Isabel/Isobel/isabelle/Izzy/Issie who are just put on this planet to drive you completely mad.

see! after time names and spellings change, doesn't make them any less personal or mean less

imagine someone had a baby and called them a made up sounding name, loosely based on a music term, you wouldn't expect the child to go far in life, a name like maybe Condoleezza...

I saw Elaurna on a form the other day. i rang the lady up and it turned out she was called Eleanora!!!

Common names have multiple spellings but to the person who thinks Rachel should be spelt Rachael you are wrong, that's the misspelling, probably because people think it should be like Michael.

There is a lovely comment in one of the Jeeves and Wooster books from an aunt about the horribly modern spelling of Kathryn and how common that is. Some of these misspelling will go on to become more standard themselves. None of the OPs examples were particularly bad. The worst example I ever saw of a 'creative' spelling of a standard name was Abbey-Gale. Very classy.

I have this problem with my 2 DCs. I tried to give them slightly unusual names but with standard spellings to make life easier for them (they have a very common surname so wanted first names to be a bit unique) but people still get the spellings/pronunciation wrong.

It doesn't really bother me but I have friends who go absolutely ballistic when people get the spelling of their DCs nanes wrong!

I do admit that the unnecessary unusual spellings are a bit pointless though.

My DD has a very commom name but people still spell it several different ways. My friend called her DS Jon I always why not the common way given that she was a teacher.

If I posted the spelling of my original birth name I would immediately out myself as I am the only person I have ever heard of with that spelling, and google seems to agree with me Confused

Why would you worry about it, op? If people choose to deviate from the more usual way of spelling a name, they can hardly expect you to be divinely inspired, can they?

Ysabella doesn't even make sense! You wouldn't pronounce it the same way.

You used the normal spelling, if someone makes up spelling for their kid's name they should be prepared for the fact people will constantly misspell it.

Ps- made up names are utterly pathetic- like people consider their dc as cute little toys they can mess about with and not actual people who have to get lives and jobs.
