Names with strange spellings

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

Let's hope little Quym doesn't take up hairdressing and open her own place. 'Quym's Trims' would give out totally the wrong message.

Oi! I'm a "Jaime" and I think it's a lovely name :) It's the feminine version. You wouldn't complain about a girl named Olivia would you?!

But I think some people take it to the utmost extremes. I know so many children who have utterly appalling names. It's like the parents opened a dictionary at 5 or 7 random points and went "there we are, that's the name!"

Mathew / (and a few) Matthew's
Natasha / Natacha
And a bit more obvious, Mollie / Molly

It's just horses for courses isn't it?
What about Barbra/Barbara or Debra/Deborah?

I have come across the name 'Ripleigh' which yes I'll admit I liked the sound of, before I saw the spelling Confused

Can't decide whether YABU or not. The names you highlight are perfectly normal spellings; on the other hand, I hate being caught out making that kind of mistake myself. I'm especially bad at remembering which Jayne to apply. Jorja-level names are another thing altogether, and serve as a signal to hoik them judgey pants up so far that they disappear up our arses.

Okay, naming your kid Unique regardless of spelling is just stupid. It is a stupid name.

We know a Jazzmyne, which always makes my eyes hurt a little when I see it written down.

And a Jorja.

In September DS will be going to school with two girls named Unique and Uneeque.

I love creative spellings of names although I wouldn't use one My favourites include: Souixzanne, Elyviya and Emmer-Leigh.

The spelling of my name is incredibly annoying. I wish it was just plain old Lucy. It just gets spelt incorrectly all the time and it's very annoying. Pointless. Don't know what my mum was playing at.

lurker The name Lindsey has about 20 different ways to spell it - lindsay, Lindsey, linsey, linsay, Lyndsay, lyndsey, lynsay, Lynsey, Linzi, lynzi, lindzi, lyndzi....adding ie or z or removing the d, too many variations!!

My dd is Catherine. We call her Catey. It's traditional In our family, and I refused to call her Katy. If I'd wanted to call her Katy I would have used Katherine!

But some aren't doing it to be awkward, some are actually accepted alternative spellings:
Jane / Jayne
Gemma / Jemma
Allison / Alison / Alyson
Catherine / Katherine

Therefore YABU.

I think it's massively small minded and petty to get into a flap over this!

I have a very traditional English name which is spelt with one letter different to the norm. I've disliked my name at times in my life, but I've never disliked the spelling of my name as it's always made me stand out, in a good way :) I am the only one who I have met although there are a couple of moderately well known ones sharing my spelling.

My eldest DS also has the non-standard spelling of his name. He has what turned out to be a v popular name in our area for boys his age, but he is the only one with this particular spelling.

Rachael is NOT a misspelling. It's an old and completely legitimate variation of Rachel. People don't seem to know the difference between variant spellings and kre8tiv spellings.

The worst one I have ever seen is Geccika for Jessica. I thought it was some awful fad thing but no- her parents spelt it like that. WTF.
My sister had a teenage phase of spelling her -y ended name with an -i. She has long since grown out of it but our dad still signs birthday cards to her Love Daddi :)

Tomasz is polish, same as lukasz. Both pronounced very similar to Thomas and Lucas.
