To publicly denounce Santander as evil scumbags?

I called them for a CLOSING balance so I could CLOSE my account. I asked them to confirm there were no 'live' standing orders, direct debits etc. They confirmed this was so and told me what was outstanding. I paid it. End of.

Apart from while it was clearing, they took a £7.20 overdraft protection payment and decided not to CLOSE my account after all but to start making charges for my 'unauthorised overdraft' of, er, £7.20.

Today I received a letter telling me I owed them £106 + charges. Sadly, they concluded after an hour long ranty phonecall, it is not within their power to waive any of these charges and if I do not pay them, they will keep right on adding to them because it was MY MISTAKE for not checking that the CLOSING balance was zero. Fucking scumbags. I am so angry I have turned to drink.

I tried to transfer money to revolut and they blocked it saying it could be a scam. I pointed out having identified myself that nobody was telling me to move the money. They wanted to know why. I told them it was my decision because revolut has better service. Still not satisfied.. they had to know why I wanted to transfer the money. I told them that I could fund my crypto account from revolut. Big mistake. Coinbase could be a scam they said!! I can't even close the account until they unblock it!! Bloody hell. Those people are impossible. When you give them money no problem, moving it out to a legitimate bank and they don't let you. I shall never recommend Santander.

HSBC are a joy and have been with them years

Yes Santander are rubbish. Only DS2 had an account with them, but we have closed it.
Should have known at the beginning when we said we wanted our names on DS's passbook and the woman said "Are you sure? It makes it much easier for me if you don't" as if we were there for her convenience. When we closed the account he was asked "Don't you want to save money any more?"
Yes, we do, but not with you.

zlist · 13/06/2012 14:47

They made it ridiculously hard for my elderly father to get the few hundred pounds out of his late wife's account and close it. If he hadn't had his family to help (including drive him to a main office - apparently they had to see him in person) by chasing the up/filling it many forms/challenging them then he wouldn't have been able to get it. I think that was the whole point. It took newly 6 months and many man hours our end to get it sorted for him.

maddening · 13/06/2012 14:34

good work! now check your credit file incase they have filed adverse information

EmmalinaC · 13/06/2012 14:07

I had to come back to this thread to say that this morning, unbelievably, the collections department refunded all the charges and allowed me to close my account!

I think the change came when I offered to pay all the charges to get the fuckers off my case but made it clear that I would still be making a formal complaint and going to the Ombudsman if necessary... (I had been reliably informed that any bank gets charged £400 by the Ombudsman if a complaint gets that far so it really wouldn't be in their best interests).

The Lovely Sue then found a way to refund each charge, one at a time, leaving me a closing balance of £30 which I paid with something close to joy.

Oh happy day! Grin

BUT I stand by the statement that they are evil scumbags (with the notable exception of Sue in collections who is a shiny star and deserves some kind of award Thanks).

Yes I do get that feeling Grimma, which then of course means I never CAN close the account! Gah.

Rosa · 13/06/2012 10:48

DO they not record all phone calls for 'customer service training' .. Ask to have it played back , do it all in writing, recorder mail etc etc . This kind of thing drives me insane... Agree scumbags..

GrimmaTheNome · 13/06/2012 10:44

Excellent customer service. I've never been overdrawn or tried to close the account though...

I think they must be something like 'fair weather friends'. Fine if you've got a continuing account in credit. But if you've got something else... in particular it seems when dealing with accounts for elderly and deceased relatives when any decent institution would try to to its best surely, they seem to specialise in making things difficult.

All the more kudos to GoingToThePark's manager for being a decent human being in this organisation!

I am still bitter about the shares issue. My mum had an account with Abbey National in a sole name. She than added my dad to the account. His name was put on 1st. Sadly he died before the shares were issued.
She didn't get her shares because she didn't qualify.
Have boycotted them ever since.

Catinthebox · 13/06/2012 09:28

I had to deal with them when my mum died.

They 'lost' bank accounts adding up to several thousand pounds, would ask me to get a solicitor to contact them and refuse to deal with me direct- when they needed some of my personal details.

I was told that an investment bond had been closed and was now in a holding account so to just move the money. It hadn't, it had about a week left to run, but on their advice I moved it and lost over a thousand pounds in interest.

When I tried to make a complaint I had the phone put down on me and was generally given the run round. It wasn't the best time to be dealing with it and I gave up.

But yes, evil scumbags sums it up Sad

GoingToThePark · 13/06/2012 09:27

Banked with abbey then Santander for seven years, about two years into my account my bastard brother stole my card and ran up six hundred pounds worth of charges by taking me overdrawn when I didn't have an overdraft facility on that account.

I wept with the bank manager and she waived all the charges then and there.

So, I'm sticking with them for now.

Natwest on the other hand, walked in at aged 18 asking for a 100 pound overdraft, walked out with a two grand loan I didn't need or want and loads of ppi!!! Robbing cunts.

summerintherosegarden · 13/06/2012 09:16

Wow I'm really surprised to read these, another one here who loves Santander. I was with HSBC for years and had one problem after another...for the last 3 ish years Santander have been brilliant. Excellent customer service. I've never been overdrawn or tried to close the account though...

Longdistance · 13/06/2012 07:55

Yes. they are theiving bastards!!! I left them as the service was getting even more shoddy, as was an Abbey customer, and as soon as Santander took over they rapidly went to the dogs.
After banking with them for possibly half my life (18yrs), I closed my account and moved to Nationwide. So far so good.
In fact, been writing to Santander about PPI's, as they owe me thousands. Will gladly take that back Grin
I agree FOS is you best bet. Good Luck x

balotelli · 13/06/2012 07:26

Been Banking with Santander for some years both business and personal accounts.

Sorry to say I have never had any problem with them. They have always treated me well and never over charged me.

Just had to bring some blalnce though I know I am probably in the minority.

Bennifer · 13/06/2012 04:49

That is pretty bad and I sympathise. On the other hand, I'm in love with Santander right now, they're paying for me to go on a big long holiday!

SofaKing · 13/06/2012 04:41

Abbey nearly ruined our wedding by cancelling both our debit cards the week before by mistake. We left after that but it was so much trouble to cancel our account that we left it open with a balance of three pence.
They still have to send us a statement every month so being obstructive when trying to close an account is costing them lots, we've left the account like that for four years!

CouthyMow · 13/06/2012 00:05

I gave up trying to close my Cunting Santander account. I have just stopped all money going into and out of it, and am hoping that after a year of that, they will close the bastarding thing.

I always used to think that Abbey was bad. Until they were taken over by Santan-fucking-der.

Cunts.

TheCrackFox · 12/06/2012 23:58

One of my friends is having a terrible time with Santander - they really are a bunch of cunts.
