What kind of carpet? Quick poll!

Sorry this is a really boring question DH and I are going to look at a new carpet for hall stairs and landing tomorrow

He really wants wool
I like wool BUT we had an absolute nightmare with wool carpets in our old house once moths got in and we never got rid of them. I said never again.

so wise ladies of mumsnet, what do you recommend for your hall stairs and landing carpets.

(Agree that carpets are not strictly speaking necessary at all but I am putting my foot down that I want something nice and soft underfoot especially since we got rid of all the carpets downstairs)

the carpet shop claims to sell a moth proof range of natural carpets but I wonder if it’s just a con.

i’d go down the road of really good thick underlay (dampens sound) and a reasonably priced poly carpet. Then change it in a few years rather than a dear carpet and you want to get your moneys worth so rug doctor and scrubbing it and complaining it doesn’t look ckean….

rug doctor work well on these cheap carpets.
wet wool carpets not so much as they STINK.

id rather replace after a few years if dirty and the rug doctor no longer works to remove stains as too deeply ingrained. Plus decor and tastes change too so maybe a new one would match the new colour scheme of choice by then better anyway.

if you buy a dear wool carpet youll want to keep it for a decade…..

We have a wool carpet on the stairs. It's nearly four years old and still looks great - no flattening at all. I do find those white larval cases in undisturbed corners and sometimes see small moths on the wall, but no holes so far. I'm not sure if our carpet has been treated to be moth-resisrant or not - I don't think that was mentioned when we bought it.

We had 80/20 wool blend from Cormar. Destroyed by moths within 3 years, even in high traffic areas, not just in hidden spots. Just had them all replaced and every shop we visited said to get synthetic - even the anti moth treated wool ones are only guaranteed for 2 years apparently. I'd rather easy clean slightly compressed carpets than munched ones. We used to joke that when we redecorated we'd need a colour called "squashed moth"!

We’ve got 80/20 wool and it is hard wearing but I found there was much less choice. I went with it as I had heard that wool will smoulder in a fire whereas man made will catch really quickly. I’m not sure if I’m being paranoid as no one else has ever mentioned it as a thing though.
i also found man made tends to get tracks on it on stairs, so the area that gets walked on tends to flatten more noticeably.
So a bit of a trade off with less choice and probably more expensive against safety and longer lasting.
Obviousiy unless you’re completely demented like me, don’t buy cream because you think because you no longer have children at home it’ll be fine. Then get a dog 🙄

I could have written this post. 80% wool light beige carpet work a sort of subtle slightly darker beige herring bone pattern in it. Looked beautiful for two days. Then the dog was sick on it and the stain never fully came out, even with a rug doctor. I’ve no idea why it thought a light carpet was a good idea for such a high traffic area.

Yes 80/20 wool. Flecked. Decent underlay. NOT BLOODY GREY.
Sorry if you love grey. I bought my house as an ex rental and they had recarpeted the entire house in a lovely quality carpet in wet concrete coloured grey so I am having to live with it and I hate grey so much.

I got 80 percent wool with 20 percent synthetic for our hall stairs and landing. No moths. It’s been great so far.
We had all synthetic before and it wasn’t as hard wearing in my opinion.

I wish some advice had appeared for you.

I'm in the same position. Need carpet for stairs and landing but very concerned about moths.

We had wool many years ago and no moths however there seems to be more mention of them nowadays.
