Anyone planning on buying a wind up FM radio?

As part of the Be Ready campaign https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwd094x57p32o

households are advised to have basic supplies in, in case of any disruption. Which brings us inline to quite a few other countries. Most is pretty normal and easy to get or we have in already.

Except for a wind up FM radio. I don’t have one of those. But I do love a gadget. Anyone have a wind up radio or planning on buying one?

Wes Streeting walks in front of the Downing Street building facade carrying a binder that says 'Secretary of State for Defence' on the front, in September.

Streeting: Prepare for supply chain disruption from cyber or climate emergencies

The defence secretary says the UK needs to be ready for scenarios including impact to essential supply chains.

@AnnaMagnani wrote "I can't really think of a good way of covering cooking and heating without spending £££ on stuff that will, hopefully, never be used"

Those costs and storage for things I will rarely use are part of why I'm reluctant to start gathering survival "hardware".

I've nearly sorted back ups of prescriptions (one medication remaining). Longer lasting basic food is being purchased slowly. Without a heat source in mind choices are limited.

we have a gas bbq. Use it as intended in the summer and if we had to in winter could use it in the garage. Also we have a gas hob in the kitchen so with matches it is useable if the electricity goes out.

tbh we have been looking at log burners for a few years not so much for prepping but more as we like them and live semi rural with a lot of places locally to source wood cheaply so saving money as well. But that’s a monetary investment probably more than most would want to make although would be useful for other reasons.

also considering a plug in solar panel for the shed roof and air con for the summer. Less about prepping and more about building in resilience to our everyday lives and the house going forward.

TBH if you have a garage or even a small covered area just outside the house you could use disposable BBQs or a small cheap one. Have it in as a backup for these preps and then get use out of it during the summer.

Can you find a link for that please as it is concerning and the complete opposite to what I have read:

https://www.facebook.com/timesandsundaytimes/posts/the-chancellor-john-healey-will-unveil-billions-of-pounds-of-new-defence-spendin/1582005390623518/

The Times are reporting that the current Labour Government are increasing defence spending.

I said I believe defence spending is going up and that's what that report says? It's pretty much the same as what I read. Unless you meant to quote another poster.

So sorry, I did quote the wrong poster, that was meant for @FairKoala .Can I blame lack of caffeine?! Apologies again.

take a bit of time to wash the film - its available across the country at different venues - or you can set up a showing yourself for local community

its really useful to know what small things we could all be doing to prevent some of this actually happening

National Emergency Briefing

A 50-min film centred around the National Emergency Briefing. The frank facts, but also the huge opportunity if Government steps up and leads a WW2-scale response. Designed to be watched by communities together with their MP. Due for release 7th April....

No worries! I thought it might be my lack of caffeine reading it wrongly! 😅

Currently sitting in bed hoping my feed machine will last no power since Saturday and will be at least tomorrow before it goes on. All the food we grew and froze for family for the the winter ruined . 2 freezers worth This happens every time there is a storm and I’m getting phone calls about installing fucking fibre broadband. This country has its priorities all wrong . And I’m never stock piling anything again.

Springtimeinsunshine · Today 10:08

If it happens with every storm then it might be time to invest in a (second hand) generator or solar panels. I believe one of the energy companies are doing loans so you can pay monthly rather than in one go.

Gettingbysomehow · Today 10:29

I like to have a wind up radio, power bank and so on as normal because in this part of Somerset we get a lot of power cuts. I always have a battery powered radio too because Id go nuts with nothing to listen too on a cold winters night in a power cut.
The power bank and fast charger for my phone is essential too because I need to be able to keep in touch with my employer.

I'm so sorry - I grow and freeze too and it's a labour of love as much as anything else - the growing time, the processing time - it's a huge effort! It's an amazing skill to have though so I really hope you won't be too disheartened.

We have an electric dehydrator - again it takes a long time, but dehydrate some of our apple rings for instance so that they are not all in the freezer. It was only about £30 I think - just basic, but very low running costs.

We are thinking about getting a Jackery Power Station precisely for this reason. They are very spendy!! Quite an investment at about £800 for the power we would need to run our freezer for a couple of days full time, but with the way things are going we are seriously considering it - as you can combine it with keeping the lid closed and hopefully recharging the Jackery at the same time - I'm hopeful we might get 4-5 days grace before it all spoils.

None of this helps you presently though... just giving you a bit of solidarity!

One of the most used and useful items I have is a 10 year old solar light much like this one. I keep it on the window sill summer and winter and its always ready to go.
I cant find this particular one any more but Ive linked a similar one.
I use it for reading when the power is out but also going into the garden after dark and walking to wherever the car is parked.
Its completely eco friendly and never runs out of batteries like torches do.

I’ve recently got one that is also a torch.

I do tend to go into panic mode about these sort of things. We’ll probably never use it.

I’ve also got 2 huge bottles of water. Food wise we’d be ok for at least a week and I always have tons of toilet roll.

The one thing I do worry about is prescription medication. We both take various meds including anticoagulants but I can’t stockpile those.

I certainly do. My GP allows prescriptions to be filled every two weeks because some pharmacies take ages to fill them.
I found a pharmacy in the next town who does them in a day so I have a three month supply of vital meds now.
I keep it at 3 months no more.

oh come on they have been banging on about Gaza and Kyev since they first kicked off

"Gaza and Kyiv" are not the same as having someone attacking the UK, which is what they want you to prepare for.
Just today, there's been an article about people stocking piling because the defence secretary or what his title is said there will be a war before in the next 1000 days is up.
I find it very interesting that it suddenly ramped up.

user1471556818 · Today 12:31

I was brought up in countryside with limited public transport and got snowed in every yr or so it felt as a child .We always had extra food batteries candles etc so its not new, its just folks have to be reminded of something that was just the norm .
Weirdly I have moved to somewhere that a couple of yrs ago had no electrical supply following a storm for several days.
I have bought a calor gas fire purely as a precaution,
I already have some extra tins candles batteries keep some cash at hand and dh has wind up radio for allotment .Will buy some bottled water .
Its just sensible

Gettingbysomehow · Today 12:52

Me too user. Where I Iive in Somerset the power is always going out and there are floods every year, luckily I live up a hill, but I still need a canoe sometimes to get out of my village. So I have all this stuff anyway including a suitable power pack so I can work from home if I cant get in.

Kepler22B · Today 13:03

My gas fire works with out electricity (battery spark) so if the power goes we can stay warm.

Food wise. Cold food would be fine for a few days, longer than that might have to use the BBQ in the garage with the doors open. I might invest in a kettle that can work from the car as not having tea would not be good - for me or my loved ones.
