Anyone planning on buying a wind up FM radio?

As part of the Be Ready campaign https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwd094x57p32o

households are advised to have basic supplies in, in case of any disruption. Which brings us inline to quite a few other countries. Most is pretty normal and easy to get or we have in already.

Except for a wind up FM radio. I don’t have one of those. But I do love a gadget. Anyone have a wind up radio or planning on buying one?

Streeting: Prepare for supply chain disruption from cyber or climate emergencies

The defence secretary says the UK needs to be ready for scenarios including impact to essential supply chains.

I have a battery one. Somewhere.

What do you do about using the toilet? Put a carrier bag in the toilet and poo in that?

Why use the loo if not a receptacle for the immediate disposal of human waste? Better off shitting in the garden surely? Or if in a flat - straight in the bag and out the window. Don't turn your house into a biohazard.

I got this one. It’s got a torch and you can charge your phone from it. 13 quid! I’ve also got a battery radio so the wind up one really is for emergencies.

Have you used it? Is it any good?

The cognitive dissonance must be strong in this government. “Prep for emergencies that will become more frequent due to climate change!” vs “Yes we have just gone back on our promise and approved more drilling for gas in the North Sea!”

I must be reading different sources. It's preparing for disruption caused by grid instability, cyber attacks and attacks by foreign powers.

Allowing drilling for gas has increased my respect for the government. Rosebank next please.

I've just bought a couple of long handled lighters & gas so I can light my gas hobs in the event of a power cut & I'm saving glass jars to put tea lights in so I can use them safely. I've got loads of tins & packets in my cupboard & a full freezer which will last me until it defrosts, the only thing I don't have is water but I don't drink tea or coffee so probably 5 litres would last me 2 or 3 days, in the event of things looking dodgy I would fill my bath up for flushing the loo & washing in preparation. I have a fully charged powerbank & am considering buying a large one that you can plug in mains appliances, the one I'm looking at will power a microwave or air fryer for an hour if needed & charge a mobile phone 12 times.

We live in London and have approximately 35 (no exaggeration) places to buy water and non perishables within half a mile of our house so the only thing we do is make sure we have a some cash in the house in case of a cyber attack that effects banks and paying by card - after an unpleasant experience in Spain a few years ago when you couldn’t pay by card anywhere or use ATMs for several days and we had no cash.

Treehorns · 23/10/2026 12:22

I bought a couple. Rechargeable ones. Sound is ok. For storms as much as anything.
My in laws were without electricity for a week a few years ago after a storm, so good to have. Solar, wind up ones.

In emergency (etc) situations, communication is extremely important and often underestimated.

Is it though? I'm not sure rolling brown / black outs count as a genuine emergency situ. If the shit genuinely goes down - one's two wind-up radios would be best employed as clubbing instruments.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 23/10/2026 12:20

No. Just get on with your life and stop listening to this crap. Qué, sera, sera. Too much anxiety nowadays.

Surely if we're in the 'oh dear my primary wind-up radio is buggered - best get the reserve out' territory, the only thing that will save you is guns or a predilection for violence?

@Constantrunner yeah in the intervening 30 years things have deteriorated somewhat on parts of the Thames Water network - in our area of SE London alone we have had three seriously major pipe bursts in the last two weeks (serious enough to close roads and take out water supply for a day or so)

Sorry to hear that. I live in another city now and in thirty years have had water out for two hours once unplanned and once for the morning planned with leaflets through the door warning us. I never keep bottled water just in case. Power and water have always been secure.

I will prepare this weekend, but I dislike being told this is normal. It really isn't.

If one goes, you still have one. In prepping, they say, "2 is 1 and 1 is none".

As the name says I live in the sticks although not miles from civilisation. We do get frequent power cuts lasting a few hours every winter so I already have a power cut box. However I think it needs a good refresh.
I have a radio that works on mains, battery or wind up. I have a light that can be charged by solar, mains, usb or battery.

The main thing I really need to do is get the solar panels linked to a socket. It's so frustrating when the power goes off we can't use solar.

This sort of thing is sadly a rather regular occurrence in London - so we are well used to having bottled water available.

I lived in London in the nineties and never had bottled water. Water outages are usually very short term. A few hours at most.

TonTonMacoute · 23/10/2026 12:03

I think most people who live in fairly isolated rural areas are pretty well prepared already.

We do have a radio/torch which winds up and also has a solar cell. It's made by Midland.

Yes, it makes me weep. The folly.

This! I'm also being targeted by Use Less Water ads as AI usage massively ramps up

Because it’s not about Climate Change. It’s about Russia. They just added the climate change and weather bits to try and avoid panic.

If the shit hits the fan to that extent, people need a group plan, because realistically, you'll get what you've stocked up, taken off you. Plus the women will need enough men around them, who will defend them.
I'm not sure why a solar powered radio needs a phone charger on it, for this prep purpose. I doubt anyone could concentrate to play, downloaded, off WiFi games. Of course if it makes you feel better, prep, but if it's got bad enough to need bottled water, you need light weight machetes, petrol powered tools, to fight with, nail guns are effective. On a daily basis I have power banks fully charged, only because 'my chair' isn't by plugs.

We needed bottled water a few years ago when the weather was bad, there was some mechanical failure and the local processing plant started to overflow into a local river so processing had to stop. We were without running water for a week. The problem was widespread and local shops and delivery services ran out of bottled water. No roaming gangs, no machetes and no fighting. Since then, here in the south, there have been shorter numerous water outages for various reasons and a few longer ones. Do you not watch the news?

Sherararara · 23/10/2026 11:55

Just buy a battery one and have spare batteries. If disruption is so severe you run out of and can’t buy any new batteries then a wind up radio isn’t going to save you.
