What do you remember your mum wearing or smelling like when she used to go out?

Femme by Rochas or Anais Anais.

My mum didn’t really dress up (not much money) but when she did it was a black chiffon clinging evening dress or a stunning red and white and black patterned evening maxi dress (70s chick). She did have a couple of designer pieces from her previous life in advertising, just classic evening outfits, dresses.

I once went with her to buy a midnight blue silk and sequinned evening dress from a concession in Harvey Nicks but her mum had given her money for this as it was for a special charity hotel event (ball).

My mum wears the same perfume my Granny wore, Youth Dew. Even when she was far too young to do so! I haven’t quite sprung for that (yet) but I have been on a mission to find a signature scent my children can remember me for, I think I’ve settled on Chanel Coco, while it’s not Youth Dew, I’ve clearly followed my female line in their love of old lady musky perfumes!

One of my boys was at uni thousands of miles from home and one day he phoned me crying and said, mum I could smell your perfume in Tesco and I went looking for you, but it wasn’t you and now I’m sitting in the car crying.

The perfume was Organza.

Chanel no5 or este lauder youth dew. Even for gardening and dog walking! And the faint waft of silk cut.

Soft tweedy skirts, soft fitted twinsets, even with wellies. Slim, bobbed hair, not much make up. Pretty sandals/ flat shoez. Never owned a pair of trainers or coat that didnt have a belt or shape:)

Paloma Picasso. She used to have this black, velvety wool coat that she'd where out. She's never been a smoker, but I remember standing in the hallway sniffing her coat, remarking about the 'pretty pub smell' (perfume mixed with stalemate booze and cigarette smoke).

White Dirmonds by Estee Lauder. I have a cardigan and this perfume in a special box . I would love just one more hug from her while wearing this . She wasn't glamorous but wore expensive pretty conservative clothes .

When she was in her 30s (in the early 1990s), I remember her wearing a long black fitted dress, with inch-wide straps and thigh split. She always smelt of body shop japanese musk perdume oil, which got discontinued in the late 90s/early 00s. When she passed away in 2014, I bought a small bottle of Japanese musk for a small fortune from an Ebay seller. It's kept in a drawer, and i sometimes have a smell when I really miss her.

I remember my parents having dinner parties in the 1970s. My Mum used to bring me up some of the special food on a tray for me to eat in bed and she always had lipstick and perfume on.

I remember there were always after dinner mints. If we were lucky we got one of those.

Our ma wore "Je Reviens" by Worth, in a little blue bottle (not a Lalique one, sadly !) I loved to have a sniff of it.....she used to rustle in and out of our rooms, with the layers of net under whatever gown it was (the parents used to go to quite fancy things when we were very young) The smell of powder and lipstick....so glamorous 💫

Wow, I can't believe how many others have said Chanel no. 5 and Elnett hairspray! Ditto. Oh, and Pantene conditioner.

Mine was quite unconventional in wearing this magnificent, long bottle green coat and lots of hippy-ish jewellery, harking back to her 70s era.

Nowadays, actually at 70, she usually smells of dog, toast and unidentified hand cream, but I think she's very content with that 😂
