Are there some things that you cannot learn?

I don't mean things like how to be a morning person, or to change your life, or think like a rich person, or any other such bollocks. I mean skills that should be learnable, things that have a right way and a wrong way, like, for example, Blender.

I'm WFH now, so I have more spare time in the evening. I decided it would be fun to learn how to make animations - nothing serious, just funny little animated people doing silly things.

After two hours of trying to turn blobs into something that vaguely resembled a human, I realised you can download free people-shaped blobs. Three hours into trying to get my people-shaped blob to move like a person, I realised you can download special control rigs. Another hour later, my people-shaped blob was no longer people-shaped. Poor Blob was a distorted smudge across the screen.

It then occurred to me that Blender was not going to be one of the things I could learn while doing and by reading online tutorials, and I should probably start from the basics.

I've spent two and a half hours tonight trying to flatten a cube. In spite of spending two and a half hours on this, I am only 20 minutes into the course because I have to keep going back. The lady from the video course is making me feel stabby, and it is no longer fun; it is the opposite of fun, but I will not be beaten by a software that a primary-aged child could master.

Is it me? Is it Blender? Are there just some things that some people will never be able to master no matter how determined they are?

How to braid hair. I know how to do it in theory, but my hands just can’t do it. I am in awe of how others can to it so neatly and seemingly effortlessly while I feel like I’ve got the fine motor skills of a bull elephant.

I’m learning Greek and think the alphabet makes sense in terms of how you then pronounce the words! The first sound of the letters “name” is how you pronounce it in the word….in the main!

Yes but the letters themselves are something I can't get my head around. "G" is an upside down L and pronounced like a Y. P looks like an N, R like a P. I spend winters in Cyprus, can just manage to recognise place names by spring, and have to learn them all over again when I return in autumn.

I can’t read music. At school I felt like the only one who couldn’t. I’ve tried as an adult and I can’t do it

Me too. And I'm in a choir, faking it week after week. The notes on the page only make sense to me after I've heard the melody played, but I rely on my ear.

Arts and crafts. I have so many great ideas in my head, and enjoy following interior design accounts on Instagram, but when I try to do something myself it looks like it was done by a drunk 4 year old. I can’t crochet, play the drums (I can’t get my hands to do different beats at the same time), clarinet (I was asked to give it up after 2 years), or tell my left from my right. I’m very left handed (do everything with left hand and left foot first) so I wonder if that’s got anything to do with it.

Zumba and any dancing that isn't ballet. I just do not have the coordination to do it, and with zumba, definitely not at the speed they go at. I simply cannot do it no matter how much I try. I can't learn some choreography at all, and none at speed.

I use the 'L' my thumb and fore finger make to remind me...HTH...

I do that to work out which of these symbols < > means "more than" and which means "less than". I never can remember.

I could do a forward roll (not that I've tried to for many years), but never could manage a backward roll, even though I first tried in Reception. I always felt as though I was going to pull my own head off.

I'm terrible at hitting a ball, catching a ball and throwing a ball. Although I was reasonable at hockey because the ball usually moves in 2D, not 3D.

I've never studied Greek but I have studied basic Russian and think the Greek alphabet looks very similar to Cyrillic. I think studying Cyrillic gave me a bit of insight into what it's like to be dyslexic. I mix up letters and I can recognise very few words as a whole - I have to (imperfectly) decode them letter by letter and hope that the resulting string of sounds is recognisable as a word I've heard before.

We only had to learn up to the 10 times table in the 70s and did 2x1=2, 2x2=4 etc.

When I taught in England not only did I have to learn the 11 and 12 times table but had to say them all the other way round.

I never learned to drive. I had a series of lessons in my late 20s and hated it. I never really felt confident or in charge. I used to have to take valium after a lesson. Eventually I gave up. Ive always been fortunate enough to live in a large metropolitan area with good local transport links so never needed a car. There are some advantage to being a non driver because you can get away with not going to places. Also people don't know you are in because there is no car there.

The times table. Never did master although I was in top set at school for maths.

Came to say times tables I’ve tried and tried but I cannot learn them. Even though I’ve helped my own four children learn them I haven’t improved at all on the ones I know.
I’m embarrassingly bad at maths though, my brain seems to seize up when numbers are mentioned. I took four attempt to get a C grade in GCSE. Even times and dates I get muddled with, I have to write appointments down instantly or I can guarantee I’ll write the wrong time.

To love exercising. I just can't. I'm one of those people who get seriously depressed before, during and after exercise. I don't feel good after, I don't get a dopamine hit, and I hate sweating.

To make my job and work life a priority. I really don't care about my employer, I just work to make money. I can't be bothered to share my ideas and I'm clocking out on the dot - and then won't talk or think about work until the next morning when I clock in. I wish I was more bothered in a way - or that I could learn to be more passionate about work. But it's just not important to me aside from the money.

I can't crochet. I tried doing squares for a blanket but for some reason I couldn't get them to be flat- they rose up in the middle like some sort of woollen willie warmer.

Post this on dadsnet and you will be very popular 😄

Ice skating. So many people have tried to teach me and my brain simply will not understand. Also roller skating.

Me neither. I could go along in a straight line ok but couldn't get over the fear of falling over. Inever mastered how to stop.

I can read a paper map but useless with Google maps. If I'm walking somewhere I end up going in the wrong direction and turning my phone upside down.
I've no idea how to use a sat nav either.

It’s interesting seeing how many of you have referred to not being able to crochet, but you can knit.

I managed to teach myself how to crochet during lockdown, and I was so happy after trying a few times (unsuccessfully!) over the years.

However, I can’t master knitting 🤯🧶! It’s far too tricky for me 😫☺️.

I tried to learn Japanese during lockdown on Duolingo and I just couldn't progress with it. I couldn't tell the symbols apart adequately. Odd as I can read music fluently, draw accurately and read a bit of Greek, so it's not lack of visual awareness.

I found the same. I gave up with Japanese when I realised I was never likely to be able to do more than recognise individual symbols and a few very common words on flashcards.

I cannot navigate using a map and compass. I just can't. I've read books and been on field trips to learn. I'm married to a man to whom it's as easy as breathing and who is happy to show me what he's doing. I listen to or read the details of how to do it, I understand, then within hours the information might as well never have entered my brain.
