When will this stop?

The biggest crime Michelle Obama has done is being the First Lady. The flack she gets for her looks is immense while her educational achievements and other things that she does are ignored. Feminist who fight for change should fight against the image being portrayed. Am not even going to bring racism into this because with black women they are both intertwined.

In hindsight, what they are saying is for the First Lady to be great, she has to be sexual (media standard of what it means to be one ), being well educated is pointless and please don't be black woman because that won't make you classy. For goodness sake the woman carries her self with grace. She is astute. What more do people want?

I would understand if they wrote about her failures of things she didn't get right. For example never doing what she has promised the public.

That is one of the worst things I've seen in a long, long time. It's wrong on many. many levels.

That pic comes from the Trump camp. I wouldn't take that as a serious view of how anyone views Michelle Obama. I think consensus of opinion is that she is intelligent, classy and elegant. I don't think there has been any criticism of how she has conducted herself as first lady.

This is not the first time Michelle Obama has been depicted in this manner. I can think of two others. The first one by the newyorker during their first campaign and the second one in her husband first term as a topples slave on the cover of a Spanish magazine. Hmm the fact that they let the publication go through says a lot.

It's really not worth worrying about. It's a crap cartoon by a crap cartoonist supporting a crap politician who doesn't have a chance of being elected and if he does won't have any power all will be assassinated.
What would be really upsetting would be if you had any friends who'd shared it. How did you find it?

DoinItFine · 16/05/2016 22:11

It's just racist misogynist shite.

Pretty much what you'd expect from the Trump campaign.

Ugh.

Neither woman deserves that.

It's really not worth worrying about really! Black women are fighting this image everyday. I have to bring up my daughter not to worry about things like this. To not see herself in the way Michelle is being portrayed.

But quencher it's a tweet. No reputable outlet would publish it- it's just been publicised as a 'look how crap the campaign is'. It's ridiculous that it's been picked up on and that's the result of 24 hr news.

"It's a crap cartoon by a crap cartoonist supporting a crap politician who doesn't have a chance of being elected"

I thought he was considered to be a good bet to be elected, which is horrifying really. The Trump campaign has attracted some really horrible people.

And yes that cartoon is really beyond terrible.

That is appalling.

But ironically, Michelle Obama is really lovely looking anyway Confused.

It's has been picked up, the problem is lots of people actually agree with it. The angle they are taking is how they don't even see the sexism or racism. How can a person not see that ?

I am American and even most conservatives I know like or at least grudgingly admire Michelle.

This isnt how most people see her. What an asshole that cartoonist is. I'm gonna tell him so.

Actually after seeing his Twitter I'm pretty sure he's a bored little troll.

Melania Trump doesn't deserve to be portrayed that way any more than Michelle Obama does.

It's vile to both of them.

People who "don't see" the sexism and racism don't believe there is sexism or racism.

Just black people and women trying to steal the things that white men deserve because they are so amazing.

I haven't seen his tweeter feed. I found it on a black news blog. This sort of image gets to me. How did it even become so popular?

That's just nasty.

The Trump campaign has allowed some really horrible aspects of American life come to the fore and it's so sad to see. I might do a straw poll among my relatives to make sure none of them will be voting for the odious little creep.

Just wait. It will get worse when they go after Hillary, with veiled suggestions that she is too old. Trump has already started it with talking about her being "low-energy." Of course, she's younger than Trump, but what they mean is that she is too old for a woman. The intersection of misogyny and ageism is a very ugly place.

I think consensus of opinion is that she is intelligent, classy and elegant.

That's what I thought too - everyone, media included seems to love her.

It's horrible, and the racist and sexist abuse that Michelle Obama has been subjected to throughout the Obama presidency is disgusting.

But it's worth remembering that she is enormously popular, hugely admired on the whole, and has had something around an 80% favourability rating in national polls consistently, which is very, very high for a first lady. This is not a representation of how Americans see Michelle Obama, it's just representative of one particular (awful, and worryingly robust) segment of society.

Melania Trump has been spoken about and represented as nothing more than a sexy object by her husband, his supporters, and the media since the campaign began. That is also horrible.

The Donald himself retweeted a "my wife is prettier than your wife" meme about Heidi Cruz just a couple of months ago. And his popularity only rose.

I had assumed press and public were generally, if not sympathetic to Michelle, not actively hostile.

I googled images of her and cartoon images. Most of what I found , even in cartoons, was not obviously hostile ( try the same googling Cherie Blair and see the difference).

However , Googling, as it inevitably does leads one on. I found one truly appalling cartoon. Much, much worse than the one here which led me to a racist forum which was so horrible I could almost believe the excuses of Pete Townsend et al that they were not deliberately looking for porn but simply could not believe what they were seeing.

I've cleared all cookies and history and feel like dipping my phone in disinfectant.

What more do people want?

It's not about wanting more. This racist, misogynist crap is about wanting less. Less brains, less to say, less blackness, less education, less self-confidence, less of a threat to what they are supposed to find sexually attractive. Less of a woman in their face.

oliviaclottedcream · 17/05/2016 09:02

I don't get racism or misogyny. There's a group of loony types, that seriously believe Michelle is a man. This silliness is probably aimed at those people.

Report
ApocalypseSlough · 17/05/2016 09:13

It's a revolting cartoon that says more about its creator and fans rather than the state of the world today.
