Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Sorry I was at work earlier so did not have time to post much.
I am also a sugar addict, I would join you but I am about to go on holiday so it's not great timing for me.
If it's ok I will follow your progress and cheer you on and may join you in a few weeks when I am back from holiday.
I hope your first day has continued to go well Smile

First day surprisingly not bad. I had to stop myself snaffling some of the chocolate buttons we're using to bribe DD for potty training quite a few times but otherwise ok. Today was low on temptation though. Tomorrow I have a hospital appointment, and have been in a bad habit of getting treats from the Costa outlet there, that'll be a tough one to resist.

Hello, I am Chris Pratts face... and I am also a sugar addict.
I hate being sugar free. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.
Best of luck OP.

Are you giving up fruit too? I keep thinking I should give up sugar, but would miss fruit so much.

Are or you just giving up the processed stuff??

I hated it too ChrisPrattsFace but I did like having a flatter stomach, better skin, more energy and no PMT. Sigh.

Littlepig for now I'll allow myself small quantities of fresh fruit but no dried fruit.

Good Luck - I'll follow with interest, as I am also a big fan of sugar and often toy with the idea of giving up. Perhaps after my holiday............

@OuchBollocks well you've inspired me to take veg sticks rather than fruit to work tomorrow. I'm not sure of the sugar levels in veg, but it's a start (hopefully)

Fruit in normal portions should pose no issue, but avoid fruit juice. I was sugar free to the extents I only drank water, ate meat and veg, and ate fruit.
Some people would argue that is still a heavy natural sugar diet, but I ate nothing processed or refined.
Now I'm a pig and could sit and eat sugar with a spoon

Good luck! Stay strong. It's good that you're reading labels to check for hidden sugars. Avoid especially if sugar in top 3 ingredients. Depending on how well your body regulates blood glucose, you might start feeling weak/jittery/low energy after a few days off the sugar. Just hold fast, don't reach for the snacks. Your body will re-adjust as your liver releases stored glucose back into your system.
Be careful of high-sugar (starchy) carbs, e.g. potatoes, carrots, beets, peas, and corn.
After a week or two you will be feeling amazing again.

To possibly inspire you slightly, I did the same for 7 days (last week) and lost almost 3lbs without doing any additional exercise whatsoever, whilst keeping a very small portion of sugar per day. Mainly my sugar intake is liquid (terrible sugary drink fiend), I was having up to 900 calories a day just in drinks Blush it's so easy to over consume sugar.

One thing to keep in mind is that you will likely get headaches, which are awful. I found that having just a little bit of brown sugar (half a tea spoon) in a cup of coffee in the afternoon helped a lot. At the same time I also started drinking ice cold water with fresh lemon, so my brain went "ohh, this is new!" so in a way I distracted it from thinking about all the glorious sugar I was missing out on Grin

After 2 days of going back to sugar, I feel bloated and shit again. Definitely try and stick to it if you can, even if it's just for a week - you will feel the difference massively.

I'm shattered, and it was hard to not reach for the baked goods right by the entrance or the cold fizzy drinks right near the tills when I popped into the Co-OP. Sigh. But I was strong.

I would bloody love a coke.

Good luck! A bunch of us did this back in January and had a thread for a while. I completely dumped "junk" sugar (still ate fruit, pasta, small amounts of bread etc) for 6 weeks and then added in a Saturday night treat plus the odd biscuit at the weekend. I've dropped about 2.5s and I do think the kicking the sugar addiction really helped. I now have the odd sugary bit of food but need to be really careful because if I have too much I find myself really craving more.

Well both my children are being horrendous today, but I managed to resist buying anything sweet in the M&S after DD's hospital appointment ran over and both DC had synchronised screaming fits but I'm fit to drop. At least DD has managed a day without wee or poo accidents.

I will start tomorrow I am completely addicted and I'm now realising that the only way to get control of it is to quit all together. I'm never going to be a one square girlBlush
I've tried before and done ok but it would be good to have someone share the struggle with?!

I am going to join you as well. I have made half hearted attempts before but never stuck at it. I am really addicted to chocolate and want to stop!

Apologies if this is a dumb question but do nuts have sugar? They are my go to alternative snack Blush

I quit back in January. It was hard but is second nature now. I find sweet things horribly sweet now, even fruit

If it helps, I gave up sugar almost exactly one year ago and lost 2 stone. Feel so much better and have lost that 'I MUST EAT' feeling I used to get all the time. I rarely eat bread, pasta or couscous now and only have the odd bit of potato at the weekend for family meals. It was a slow process but now its just normal for me. I do think it was harder than giving up cigs initially because people will keep 'pushing' sugar you...

I prob need to do this but as I'm still bf I'm not in the right place to do it now. If I can I'm just aiming to reduce the 100g plus of chocolate I consume daily!!
Best tip I was given when pregnant and being monitored for diabetes, is fage 0% Greek yoghurt. I could eat a massive 500g pot and it would keep you really satisfied as it is high in protein.

I'll mark my place because i've been no sugaring on and off since 2015. More off than on recently, but i'm ok with that. I needed the total quit at first to break the addiction and i've never gone back to eating as much as I used to. But when you eat more, you do crave more so i will keep it on the radar.

Best of luck! I found it helpful to not deny myself something, but to say, oh I'll have that on my birthday or some other cheat date. Brush your teeth after dinner to prevent sugary snacking too.
