Liverpool - two nights

Hello fellow Mnetters. Was supposed to be going on holiday of a lifetime to Mauritius this year...cancelled of course. So we are taking our three teenagers to Liverpool for two nights! As we are working and can't get more time off!

We are staying near the docks - on drury lane. Any tips for good breakfast spots or great restaurants that are not too far walking distance?

And am pondering whether the Beatles story or the British Music Experience would be better with our teens? ANy thoughts are gratefully received!

We had a weekend in Liverpool over Christmas (just DP and I, no kids) and loved it. We went to the British Music Experience, I thought it was quite pricey when we arrived but totally worth it, and I think the teens would really enjoy it.

Lark Lane is a short ride out of the city and has plenty of eating places.
Moose is excellent for breakfast and has two branches in the city
Bold Street is in the city centre and has lots of eating places, its a slow gentle up hill walk with the bombed out church at the top
Lots of info here

I love a mini break in Liverpool! I second the Magical Mystery Tour

Ricekrispie22 · 22/07/2020 08:19

Moose Coffee for breakfast
Love Thy Neighbour for dinner

Restlessinthenorth · 22/07/2020 08:24

Bold St has amazing breakfast options!

BarrelOfOtters · 22/07/2020 08:29

Thirding Moose cafe. It’s worth the queue. Bold street is great for food. The war rooms are good and the slavery museum. I liked the museum of Liverpool and the teens weren’t as bored as they thought they’d be.

Both the cathedrals are fab to visit, go up the Anglican one, the view is fab.

I love Liverpool it’s walkable, cabs are cheap, food is great.

allfalldown47 · 22/07/2020 09:00

My teens absolutely love Liverpool, we've been many times now, they never seem to tire of it!
They loved the Beatles Story and really enjoyed the Museum of Liverpool too.
Last time we went we did the Magical Mystery Tour bus, it's a bit cheesy but we loved it. I'm guessing that might not be running at the moment?

Liverpool is great for shopping and just wandering through, we've had so many lovely times there - enjoy op!

Uhtredswoman · 22/07/2020 09:32

So glad I stumbled across this thread - we are off to Liverpool on a short break in a few weeks!

Maybe we should wear our MN scarves OP, so we can spot one another 😂

AuntieMarys · 22/07/2020 09:34

Good restaurants on Hope St

Ginfilledcats · 22/07/2020 09:56

Fourthing moose for breakfast!!

Excellent eateries in bold street, castle street, water street.

Indian - mowgli on water street
Italian - Italian club of Italian fish club Bold street
Steak - cow shed, seal street
Tapas - neon jambon by china town
Food stall halls (amazing) duke street market (duke street) it Baltic market.

Take a walk around the docks, all the museums bar Beatles are free, all excellent - the maritime and slavery museum is brilliant and very good resource given all the BLM matters at the moment.

If the weathers nice, train to Formby pine woods and beach 20 mins away

LOVE Liverpool you'll have an amazing time x

Crystal87 · 22/07/2020 10:04

The tavern on Smithdown Road does breakfast till 2PM and the food is amazing. There are so many good places to eat in town but not sure which ones are still shut.

SoddingWeddings · 22/07/2020 10:05

Mowgli in Bold Street - there's another one nearer the docks, but this is the better of the two IMO. Amazing food.

HarrogateMum · 22/07/2020 11:51

Wow thanks everyone! I had actually stumbled on the Moose cafe website from Tripadvisor - there's one in Crosby too so I might book that for breakfast on our last day before we go and see the Anthony Gormley statues! Loads of great ideas here, thanks again!!

If you want an amazing English fry up try Shiraz.
I fourth(fifth?) Mowgli.
For a vegetarian treat, try One Fine Day.
Go and see the gardens around the Anglican and investigate Christ the King's crypt if it's open.
In fact I would call ahead for all attractions to check if they are open. We went to a few which were closed even though their websites said they were open.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/07/2020 21:30

Yes, Mowgli is gorgeous.

Personally if I was only here for 2 nights I wouldn't bother going out of the city, there is lots to see. Southport etc can wait for another visit! I

Not sure if the ferry is open as normal at the moment, but lots of people like to do the "ferry cross the mersey" bit.

Lunya is nice for tapas.

What do the teens like? There are a couple of escape rooms, although I guess they mgiht not be open at the moment. Damn virus.

World Museum is nice for a free wander around, and the Tate Liverpool is free too, and always good for a laugh if you like to gawp at conceptual art and wonder what the hell the artist was thinking. The central library is actually quite interesting - Picton Reading Rooms are superb, reminds me of Hogwarts, and the new staircase is architecturally amazing.

As others say it's a small city centre so you can travel on foot and see loads of places. It's lovely on a nice sunny day.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 28/07/2020 21:32

The Tavern on Smithdown Rd is local to me and we go there fairly often but I wouldn't say it's worth a trip out of town.

Kez0777 · 29/07/2020 08:40

We've booked to go to Liverpool on a Wednesday in August for one night. We've been a few time with DD's (now 10 & 8) does anyone know if the museums will be open?
They would happily spend their day in Primark (much bigger than our local one!) but need something else to do as well Grin

PaulaSmith1 · 29/07/2020 09:27

Tate Liverpool has a psychedelic floor that we thought was fantastic.

crimsonlake · 29/07/2020 10:53

I agree as it is a short visit stay within the city unless part of your plan is to view Anthony Gormleys statue's.
The Tavern these days gets very busy, think queuing out of the door on the street and do not think it is worth the bus journey of say 40 mins out of town on a bus that goes around the world to get there.
