What to wear with long dresses in the winter?

Just that. I am small and don't like chunky boots say, tho I think they can look cool on others. What do you wear with long winterish dresses? Thanks!

I got brogue lace up boots last winter (snail by Carvel's). I love them. The sole is a little chunky but as the boot is lace up it's more fitted than a Chelsea type boot.

Jumbojem · 17/09/2020 22:20

Carvela not Carvel's. Apologies.

I wear leggings and black boots a bit like these www.tkmaxx.com/uk/en/women/shoes/boots/ankle-boots/coffee-buckle-ankle-boots/p/39057923.

DM monkey boots (Church), or black Vejas or Stan Smiths. I do have some really nice Chelsea boots but prefer them with short skirts/dresses.

nitgel · 17/09/2020 22:55

Soft suede knee high boots

Heygirlheyboy · 18/09/2020 06:08

Thank you all, the Snails and the DMs are too chunky for me, I think I'll just see big feet and nothing else! Chelsea boots with a bit of chunk might suit me better. On the Stan Smiths is it the all black you go for it? Do they look a little like a child's school shoes?!

I have some chunky boots and some more delicate flat shoe boots depending on the look I’m going. I got a great (and cheap!) pair at Dune last year. If you want black trainers also check out adidas sleek. I love my Stan smiths but prefer the look of the sleek in black.

You know, you're probably mistaken about how you look in a longish dress and clumpy boots. It's a style people are entirely used to seeing, and I doubt that anyone makes any judgement based on the height of the wearer.

Maybe break down which bit you think looks wrong on you?

The leather? Choose velvet maybe, or some other more fragile looking material.
The width? Find some that are cut to be narrow.
The sole? To me a very chunky sole emphasises the delicacy of the rest of one's silhouette. And of course you can choose whichever heel suits you best.

I'm only disagreeing with you because there's such a danger that any other type of footwear, worn with a long winter dress, is going to look dowdy. (Unless you want to spend the entire winter in white trainers?)

Snag tights absolutely great in different deniers and brilliant colours!

Sostenueto · 18/09/2020 09:39

Here's a link also size and shape ranges brilliant

I have all black Stan Smiths but with white logo etc.i have very small feet so perhaps they do look like school shoes, but i don’t care! I also have Continental 80s which I really like too.

FWIW I completely disagree re Snag tights, I found them completely rubbish!

Heygirlheyboy · 19/09/2020 14:15

Thanks, appreciate the input. I definitely wouldn't be white trainers with a winter dress!! I saw nice Chelsea boots in Dune with a chunky sole so they might work. To me they look clodhopperish on my feet which are probably bigger than I am tall iyswim. I'm used to years of wedges, heeled boots etc so flat feet plus chunk looks big to me. I will also look again at Stan Smiths as I love a comfy, dress down option. Any other ideas would be great. Like the velvet idea also. Don't know if suede high boots would like a bit Kate Middleton!

Yes snag tights snagged terribly for me - a very apt name unfortunately

Lockdownhairdontcare · 19/09/2020 14:39

I wear with a mix of chunky suede ankle boots, leather and suede block heel boots and Chelsea boots.

Goingdooolally · 19/09/2020 14:53

70s style knee high boots?

anon444877 · 19/09/2020 15:11

Yes nice knee high suede or leather boots. Brora have a lot of dresses styled with various boots for inspiration

Heygirlheyboy · 19/09/2020 21:29

Thanks, will take a look. Have a lovely long emerald green and navy dress coming my way and would like to have the right shoes to go.

I did wear DM bubble toe and brogues as a teen so perhaps I need to try a few chunky styles.

Yay or nay to these? Too high?

The dress I ordered arrived.... It didn't suit. After all that!! Grin

Rollerbird · 23/09/2020 20:07

I used to have boots like this in about 2007 from tkmaxx
They were SO comfy.
It makes me want to buy them again!!!

homemadecommunistrussia · 23/09/2020 20:17

How about something like these Chelsea boots with a heel?
Those wedge ones look old fashioned to me.

Heygirlheyboy · 23/09/2020 21:11

Thank you. To me those are nice but a bit leathery! Grin I agree the ones I posted were perhaps too high and tipped into the past but yes, look really comfy!

pickingdaisies · 24/09/2020 07:52

OP I like those boots, but then I have issues with my feet, so my first thought is, could I walk in those! I wore flat brogues or Mary Janes when I worked, but I was under no illusion about setting any trends. Just getting through the day.
Sorry about the dress, I was excited for you!

Imtoooldforallthis · 24/09/2020 09:24

What about something like these.
