Should you wear eyeliner after 50?

Looking for ways to update my makeup and keep it looking flattering and fresh. I've always used a black or dark grey eyeliner on my top eyelid, but have been reading that it's not recommended for more mature women as it can make your eyes look smaller.

What do you think?

I wear it and I am 57. I think it looks fine, if it down;t my DDs would soon tell me! I don't do heavy eyeliner but I think it defines my eyes better.

It totally depends on lots of factors. What is your colouring? What other sort of makeup do you wear? How large or small are your eyes? Do you wear natural makeup apart from the eyeliner or do you wear full face? What is your overall style like? There are no rules, it all depends. If you feel your eye makeup is looking too harsh, then try a softer liner - grey or brown, and a smudged rather than harsh line. Or try tight lining rather than a thicker line over the lash line. I definitely wouldn't say that women over a certain age should 'never' wear eyeliner.

I think a softer colour is more flattering tbh.

Clinique have a taupey colour called Smokey Brown which I use which is much nicer I think.

You'll have to prise eyeliner out of my cold dead hands, but I don't like anything harsh.

But there is so much you can do with eye liner,I wear it and without it I look as though I've just crawled out of bed

Can I ask folk what eyeliner they used. I have Bobbi Brown gel which is god but unfortunately hardens with time. Mine is 1 year old and getting hard to apply. I’m 53.

My core body temp is always hot so mine always melted. I had it tattooed on - not a hard black a sort of charcoal colour. Best beauty thing I've ever done !

I'm another who is over 50 but will keep a hold of my liner till I am too shaky-handed to apply it. The only concession I've made is switching from black to a soft brown, but I'll be doing flicky wings in the care home (hopefully). I don't wear lipstick often, and never wear blusher, but I feel slightly naked without my eyeliner.

I've just bought a Nars pencil eyeliner, it seems to stay on pretty well. It comes in about 6 colours, including a few browns.
All the women I know of 50 plus, some into their 80's, wear some sort of eyeliner , and most also have their lashes dyed.

I look washed out without it. So yes.

Only on the upper lid, and wouldn't be seen dead without it.

Over 50 and always wear it though rarely black unless it’s evening. Usually wear a smoky grey or brown (Bourjois though they are being discontinued in the UK apparently)

Same as Elspeth - the Clinique taupe / brown is great. I gently smudge it in.

Absolutely no bloody way I would go without.

57 here and never go without my eyeliner. I've always worn it on my lower inner eye and have switched to charcoal grey which seems to suit me better these days. Black makes me look even more knackered then usual! Grin

50 and I’ve no intention of stopping.

Absolutely! I'm nearly 73, my hair is a beautiful silver, and I wear full makeup so I don't disappear. I wear a silvery eyeshadow that tones with my hair, and a sooty black powder eyeshadow used as eyeliner applied with a tiny wedge brush, which is softer than a liquid or pencil liner.

Yes. I don't really get why older women always want pale make up (and beige clothes).

I'm 50 this year and have worn grey for years. I wear black for BIG nights out.

Powder is less harsh too.

I think eyeliner is great and won’t stop. I wear a lovely dark green from Urban Decay... love their eyeliners

I love eyeliner and I’m over 50. Just wear it if you want imo.

My mum is 62 and still rocking her eyeliner. She looks washed out without it imo. Though to be fair to her, she doesn't look her age. Hope I've got her skin!

I'm not 50, I'm 35, but I recently had a similar worry as my dark grey was looking too harsh. I took advice from the internet and found a gorgeous Urban Decay pencil liner in a kind of goldy green khaki colour. It looks way better than what I was wearing before!
