Hair!!!

Okay, I'm pissed off with hair colouring. Advice would be fabulous.

I have naturally ginger/red hair. I hated my colour when I was younger and dyed it all sorts of colours. However, now I am going white (not grey) I mourn my ginger locks.

What I want is to keep my natural colour but JUST dye the whites. They are increasing rapidly!!

I thought that if I dyed my hair lighter than my natural colour then it would just disguise the white.

I have just used Olia Rose Gold and was gutted to see it did NOTHING. Waste of money and damage to my hair to no avail.

Any tips to just dye the whites so that they blend in with my natural colour?

Can't afford hairdressers once a month and my hair grows fast

What were you expecting from the Olia colour? Box colours dont lighten hair. To go lighter requires some sort of bleach

I just want to dye the whites so they don't stand out against the red.

This was the bit that made me think you wanted it to make your hair lighter! Did it not cover them at all or are they just a different colour to the rest of your hair?

No, my hair is exactly the same colour and the white is still....white

I want to keep my natural colour but just make the white less white, even if that's blonde or pink or whatever, just not white because of the contrast x

I have really dry hair so am a bit weary of bleaching. I don't want frazzled hair.

If you want purple highlights use a toning silver shampoo.

I’m not sure why the dye didn’t take. Maybe it wasn’t left on for long enough, I assume that your white hair is lighter than the shades of hair on the back of dye box? So it might need longer to process, as the instructions on the box would be relevant for those shades pictured.

To be honest, box dye seems like a wildcard in terms of results. I would personally leave it to a salon to sort out. You shouldn’t need to place the dye throughout all your hair, just on the white strands.

There isn't a product that will just dye the whites and not chemically treat your natural red hair. If you use a permanent dye it will lift the hair before depositing the colour. This also applies re semi- perm ones- they all contain peroxide as a developer.

One product you could try is henna but it can make white hair very bright and sometimes takes on a strange hue. Also a major faff.

I would suggest you read up on Majirel on here and look at buying salon quality dyes to do it yourself. They do an excellent range of red/coppers too.

You can't use chemical hairdyes after you have used henna so keep that in mind. X

I'm a redhead too. With a few white greys coming through.
I use L'Oréal Recital Preference. I mix a 7 and 7.3 together half a bottle of each.
It's given me the perfect red for me.
No one is aware I color my hair myself. Get loads of compliments.
Please try it before you go the henna route.

@whitebowls what sort of redhead are you? I'm asking because I have the same problem, my hair has faded to a sort of light golden brown. My own colour was like Jane Asher's. I'd quite like to recreate it but don't want to pick the wrong shade!

You sound exactly the same as me.
The colours I've mentioned are both dark blondes but because we are redheads originally it comes out a beautiful Jane Asher red.
My hair is longish and I have fine hair, but lots of it making it really thick.

Ooh I didn't know you couldn't use chemical dyes after henna. Must consider this before using the henna! Thanks for the heads up (pun intended!)

Does the L'oreal cover all white whitebowls?

I am a kind of dark ginger, but definitely ginger. Dark enough for the white to really show though.

You just need to find a dye that works on grey as close to your natural colour as possible.

If I remember rightly the number 4 indicates copper tones so you need to pick your base colour. These go from 1-11 1 being the darkest and 11 the lightest then the box colour should be that number. 4. I reckon probs 6.4 or 7.4.

To be on the safe side you might want to try 7.4 first as that's the lighter of the two and once you go darker your stuck with it.

Yes, the roots show as the hair grows. I redo mine every 3/4 weeks as it grows quickly and before the roots show .

Just washed my hair and went to use the conditioner from the Olia dye I used the other day......except it wasn't conditioner at all, it was the developer fluid I was supposed to put in the tube! No wonder it didn't work.
