what to wear with wide leg trousers???

aargh! i've bought a pair of navy, high waisted wide leg trousers- they do look good and are flattering (i think! Confused ) ,

i have to wear flats, and have a lovely pair of dark red patent ballets, but just cant find a top-

dont suit slim fitting as am an egg shaped apple short-arse-with a double chin and a crepey neck/decolletage

size 16 ( just got down from an 18 yay!)

any suggestions from you style mavens?

Nice soft cashmere jumper tucked in always looks nice. Problem with high waist is it pretty much demands a slim fitting top otherwise you lose any definition and everything can look a bit sack like. But it is also very forgiving and can create a waist where there is none. Give it a try, maybe?

I love high waisted wide legs and I'm thrilled that they're back. The bypass my thighs and make me feel a bit 1940s movie goddess.

I think the standard advice has always been to wear with something slim fitting but I've noticed that this time around they're being styled differently, with looser fitting and slightly oversized tops, or with something very casual, like a hoody. Sorry, I'm late for work so don't have time to find a link but if you look at trousers at Me and Em you'll see what I mean. They're also being worn either ankle length or extra long (like, really practical for a uk winter Grin).

I'm quite short so I'm still trying to work out whether I can pull this off without disappearing inside my clothes. I still think you can't go wrong with a Katharine Hepburn-esque silk shirt.

I wear jumpers or shirts tucked in but never have the top button fastened on the shirt.

A good quality vest top with a white shirt worn open and a long necklace

thanks for ideas, not being difficult but
-cashmere/jumper- I'm at the (ahem!) time of life that this would be too hot for me

-vest top/shirt combo- have tried before and i just cant carry this look off, or any 'layering' look

  • i was intending to wear them for nights out coming up over December, so nothing too casual- I loved the Hush Atlas wrap blouse in a burgundy colour, but its shiny and just not 'right', for me Sad

What about something like this? The ruching is very flattering and it's a lovely colour with navy. They have 27% off today, too! www.baukjen.com/uk/shop/baukjen/tops/adaline-top-winter-cherry.htm

I'd go with Flo's silk shirt idea. Something like this

Would you wear a belt too, say if you had a top tucked into the trousers?

being a soft-middled apple (if you see what i mean) a belt ot tuck in is probably not a good look on me Sad

i like that baukjen top- can an apple carry off that shape/ruching?

Plain long sleeve top v neck or high neck tucked in

Or a slim fit shirt tucked in

Anything baggy will make you look frumpy I'm afraid

I love wide trousers. Where did you get yours from? Always on the lookout. I also carry my weight around my tummy but have to find slim fitting, but not wide tops. It's not easy and I haven't bought any recently, but have had some luck with Esprit in the past. I buy cotton as I also get hot easily. I also wear boat necks or cowl necks as they balance out the bottom bit! Congrats on the weight lossFlowers

I have recommended this on here before and you'll notice it's styled here with wide legged trousers! It's a very easy shape to wear but feels smart because it's silk.

You need a ballet wrap type T shirt, but I can't find one. If anyone can, please do...

H&M have a floral blouse in navy which is elasticated at waist and has a high neck. Would show off trouser waist but not gape or look baggy. Can't seem to link from their app.

ooh, i like that jigsaw silk top, - i have wide shoulders so a slight v neck to break up the expanse of chest/shoulder looks better on me, but will order and see how it looks

am currently searching h&m

thanks all, please keep suggestions coming Smile

I came on here with the exact same question in my head! I bought some fab wide blue Cos trousers in a charity shop for £4 and am v excited, but cant think what to wear for night out.I was thinking maybe velvety wrap top but haven't seen any cheapish ones. £30 ish would be good... Apple here too, anything tucked in would need to be reasonably sturdy fabric.
So will watch with interest

I wear mine with a lace top. Vest top under lace top. Lace top isn’t baggy but isn’t especially fitted either
