Embracing my natural wavy hair without the frizz help....

Fed up with blow drying my hair straight and using irons as it is damaging my hair. So I've been allowing my very thick hair to dry naturally over the hols and have discovered that actually if I could tame the frizz and keep my wild hair under a bit of control I quite like its natural wave. Are there any products on the market I could use to encourage the wave and tame the frizz keeping my Barnet natural but tame???

Loreal extraordinary oil followed by Frizz Ease Secret Agent finishing cream .

Frizz ease mousse is good. I second the hair oil recommendation (I use a Shu Umera camellia one which is lovely).

I ditched all products and just wash it with water. Let it dry naturally. Looks fantastic!

Curly girl method.
Or aveda be curly after silicone free wash and conditioner.

To be honest, there isn't really a guaranteed way. The minute you walk outside it's a matter of crossing of your fingers and hoping for the best...

stargirl Everything?? Did it take your hair a while to get used to it?

Ooh, sorry to hijack but, stargirl, tell us more.

I have similar hair to OP and can never get the natural look right sans a halo of frizz. I've never been brave enough to ditch everything even though part of me thinks it's ridiculous to be shampooing out my natural oils and then adding back in fake ones via conditioner.

Do you not find your hair a bit greasy then? Is it easy to brush??

The whole story...I hate my hair, always have. I have tried everything! Every product! Nothing actually really worked and often left my hair looking greasy as it's frizzy and fine.

Sooo, about 4 months ago I ditched everything. No shampoo, no conditioner, nothing. Just a vigorous wash under the shower with plain water. There was a transition period where it was weird but it looks great now. Lots of friends asking what I have done. It NEEDS washed every single day - can't skip a day. It feels lovely, smells neutral, no frizz and glossy, shiny, wavy locks.

I wish I had tried this 30 years ago! I actually like my hair for the first time in my entire life! Grin

I also stopped shampooing my hair a few months ago. I 'co-wash' which means using conditioner to wash. It can take a little while for your hair to adapt but, no, mine doesn't get greasy as my head has learnt that it doesn't need to keep producing extra oil to replace what I would have previously shampooed out. I now have proper curls rather than the ball of fuzz I have lived with for most of my life.

Love frizz ease, very curly thick hair. Always struggled to manage it. Till I discovered frizz ease dream curls, never blow dry can't stand the noise.
Until recently had very long hair too got great compliments how health and soft it was.

How have you managed that transition with going to work, for instance? There is no way I could leave the house with wet hair as I have no idea what the end result will be (wide and frizzy) and if I sleep with it wet, it's still wet in the morning.

I'm tempted to try it stargirl but I've recently had my hair cut short so I wouldn't even have the fallback of tying it up to hide any disasters... Hmmmmm. Very tempted.

Apologies for the hijack OP!

Thanks Stargirl. I recently watched a documentary on chemicals/plastics and it was really unsettling. I'm reading the labels on everything now and it's an eye opener. I really think I might try your method!

Ah, well, I'm on mat leave so the transition phase was unnoticed by everyone bar DH and MIL.

How long was the transition period stargirl?

I have afro hair. John Frieda has a new product called Air dry waves. It's a foam rather than a mousse and is brilliant. Boots had it in offer for £4 per tube/can. Scrunch it in whilst hair is still quite wet. No crispiness. I love it. I also use Aveda curl cream and it's great but quite expensive at £18.50 per tube.
Good luck

I find that using a conditioner (for curly or dry hair) and NOT rinsing it out makes it far curlier and not frizzy. I have also started using the salt spray on it as well for that slightly messy look.

I can never understand why you would put conditioner on your hair and then wash it off. You don't moisurise your face then rinse off with water do you?

Mind you not rinsing the conditioner out means it takes ages to dry if doing naturally.

I have no idea but am watching this thread with interest.

I find a lot of the 'curl' products leave my hair crispy which I hate! my bathroom is littered with products which didn't do what it said on the bottle Hmm

GreenShadow · 07/08/2015 20:48

spooky - you should be able to get rid of the 'crispyness' by scrunching the curls once the hair has completely dried.

Report
spookyskeleton · 07/08/2015 20:51

I have tried that - it stays crispy all day and I just want nice soft waves!

Me too re curl products leaving hair feeling crispy. Leaving conditioner in makes it feel greasy - like when you've been out on deck on a cross-channel ferry. Horrible.

And sea salt spray just makes it sticky and then stiff and/or crispy. I want different hair.

Me too with the curl products, either crispy or dull and lanky. I've concluded that mine is best if I wash, condition, comb through then don't touch again till it's dry, problem is that's a good couple of hours, I tend to blow dry the top only and leave the lengths to dry naturally as a compromise. I went on the school run like it once last winter and got home with icicles for hair though.

I am also interested in how long the transition period was. On leave for a few weeks over the holidays, tell me it doesn't take too long?

I can swear by mixed chicks leave in conditioner. It's amazing. I wash, condition, wash out conditioner, then apply that. It's pricey though but I promise you. .......

Alternatively, my cheap version is herbal essence conditioner, the orange, blue or green ones for dry, frizzy, damaged hair. I apply it to my hair. Not too much so it's greasy but I work it through my hair, making sure I don't miss a patch. Then your hair is so bouncy you'll love it.
