I hate my hair... please help ! :(

Hi all,

I really need help on what I can do with my hair !! No matter how well I dress, my hair makes me look frumpy and it's starting to depress me Sad

I have very thick, wavy, shoulder-blades length hair... it's tends to curl when wet... I also have to deal with a bit of frizz at times...
I wish I had straight hair, but don't have the time to straighten it. A couple of weeks back, I walked into John Lewis and they had a GHD counter... I tried them but was put off when the shop assistant said that with my thickness I would need at least 45 mins to straighten the whole lot, given my thickness !Shock

I really need someone to tell which haircut would suit my face.... is there some place I can go to ... like a hair style consulting place ? or a place that will show me how to style my hair ?

The only time I like my hair is when I get a blow dry and straightening done at the salon...

on most days, I just tie my hair up with a massive clip... I desperately need a change ...

TIA ...

How long/short do you want to go? Layers? No layers? Fringe?

I might be stating the obvious :) but couldn't you ask a hairdresser you trust to thin it out - or maybe get an undercut that can't be seen easily?

I'm sure you're your own harshest critic btw, bet you have lovely hair. Also I bet there are loads of people reading this feeling jealous that you have such thick hair, it's an asset you know!

Why don't you get it professionally, chemically straightened? I've no experience myself but could be an option?

Hi all... Firstly, thanks for your replies :)

kissy I wish I could carry off that look. Also, I would break DH's heart if I chopped off my hair :)

skyler will try and put up a pic sometime tomorrow...

Chenjin I don't want to go too short... Maybe shoulder length.... I always get layers done. Never had a fringe... Too scared to try as I know I would need to straighten it... Or else it would just curl up...

voyager I have never really found a hairdresser who could advice me... Maybe that's my problem.... And I know what you mean by thick hair being an asset.... Everytime I have my hair open for a couple of minutes, everyone is always commenting on how thick and lovely it is.... But they don't know that it will turn into a mop if I leave it open Grin

ooarmehearties I have bought about that... But not sure how safe it is and will it damage my hair. Also, I need to find out what happens to new hair that grows... Will that grow straight or wavy.... My hair grows way too quickly...

I think your haircut suits your face and it's the frizz you need to sort then you'd be happy!

Your hair wouldn't take 45 mins to straighten at all! I have very similar hair to you and it takes 10 mins at most!

Babyliss big hair is also brilliant - blow dry until 80-90% then use it on ends, there are loads of youtube videos on it.

What products do you use? I would say kms moist (sorry for word) repair revival cream when wet or moroccan oil mixed with serum of some kind before drying. Use some masks overnight like espa pink clay which is lovely and smells beautiful.

You could also get a kerasilk treatment at a salon which will make it lovely and smooth.

What shampoo do you use now? Redken all soft shampoo does wonders for mine.

Also a flat paddle brush is pretty good for drying with..

Ok you are so lucky. I have fine thin straggly hair and would love your volume.

What you need is a Brazilian or keratin blow dry. It will give you smooth glossy and frizz free hair for a couple of months.

Hey OP, I get chemically straightened twice a year, have been doing so for about thirteen years (and in that time, it hasn't fallen out so touch wood, fairly safe!). The condition of it is not great but then until very recently I was bleaching it, which I can see from your pic you don't do, so you should be ok.
I had very thick, frizzy hair that could occasionally form very nice, shiny ringlets but more often than not just ended up being a massive, hot, heavy fluffball. It generally looks nice for 3 - 4 months after you've had it done (but conditioning and regular trims obvs very important). My roots start getting really bad by about month 5 and by month 6 I'll be wearing hats whilst I wait eagerly for my next appointment, but looking at your hair, I don't think your root regrowth would show up as bad (mine curls up and makes the straight parts of my hair stand up and outwards from my head. Ugh.) It costs me about £160 a time.
The only thing I'd bear in mind is that once you've had it done, you're committed to it in the sense that you can't really reverse it back to it's original state and to grow it out completely would take years - more of an issue for me with my violently curly hair that really shows up when it starts to grow out - my only option would probably be to cut the lot off and start again, but again, yours isn't as curly and wouldn't be as obvious whilst growing out.
A lot of people are always recommending the brazilian blowdry to me as a healthier option to what I have done (which is still known as the Yuko System, I think). But I've never tried it so I can't compare, but it might be worth talking to a salon about that, a lot of them do it now...

How does your hair dry if you just run some product through it and leave to dry, no brushing? Could you embrace your curly side?

I have hair thicker than that and almost waist length, take's a while to straighten but not 45 mins, I love my remingtons, go to 230deg, paid £20 for them on Amazon, always used remingtons and cant see any difference tbh. I have started curling my hair as well with barrel tongs.

Half your hair along the back horizontal, put top in a pony out the way and straighten the underneath then let the top loose and straighten that, you can also cheat put a ponie in and straighten or curl that.

Google easy updos and have a go

Your hair is gorgeous don't cut it short!
It's very dry though. How often do you wash it? washing mine less makes it much more manageable- I wash mine once a week. I use loads of conditioner I like L'Oreal ever riche.
Also if I straighten mine it only takes 10 mins though isn't quite as long as yours (I'm growing it) I always use heat protector spray. Then a bit of argan oil to finish.
Once every couple of weeks I make a hair mask from argan oil, olive oil and honey which makes it lovely and soft.

I toiled with the weight of mine for years. Up-dos were uncomfortable and heavy and never looked as sharp or stylish as I wanted them to. Leaving it down created an unflattering, ageing heaviness around my face. I had it layered, feathered, thinned out... but it always just went back to being a lump of hair within a couple of weeks. It was frumpy no matter what.
I ditched it in my twenties and have kept it short ever since. I much prefer it this way.

Am going to ask for my photo to be removed. I wanted to illustrate my hair but it's weirding me out seeing my face out here. I'm not one for internet pics or selfies usually.

Honestly, look into a Brazillian blow dry, it will turn your life around. I had hair like a lions mane before I got this done Smile

Babyliss Big Hair would work wonders on your hair.
It never makes my hair big, as such, but it takes out all the frizziness and creates bounce - and it's quick! I rough-dry my hair until it's pretty much dry, then run the BBH through. Five minutes and it's done.
