Any Brazilian Blowdryers about? If so I need advice...

My hair and drizzle really don't get on, so on a mad 'fro' fuelled impulse today I went and got my first ever Brazilian Blowdry. So far me likey. It's a lot straighter and flatter than my normal do (possibly because she wasn't trying to make a packed lunch and dress a toddler whilst doing it) and feels very silky, but I have two dilemmas...

1. They said to wait 4 full days before washing it but, in my haste to lose the frizz I'd forgotten I've got a big night out planned on Friday. What should I do? Wash that afternoon (so 72 hours post treatment) or wait and hope we go somewhere very dark?
   
   
2. Should I pay the whopping £23 for the official nano-keratin shampoo they offered me in the hairdressers or is there any cheaper alternatives that won't turn me back into Sideshow Bob?
   
   Any advice would be great.

I waited 3 days with the one I used ( amazon) I used the organix range but found it was overloading my hair and making it greasy so I switched to 'naked' which I found in boots . On offer at the moment of around the £4 each price tag. The shampoo and conditioner together are fab for my hair and not having the greasy problem. Most of the range is sodium chloride free which is what you need

Thanks. Is sodium chloride free the same as sulphate free? I think that's what they said I needed (when they were trying to sell me their pricey stuff).

I am the biggest advocate of the Brazillian blow dry. My best finding is that you can buy kits on Amazon to do it yourself that are just as good (if not better!). It will look flat at the moment as it needs to be super straight for these next few days. Straighten it again each day if youcan. As for the 4 day rule, 3 days will be fine. I got told the same after my first one. I find what is most important is to make sure your hair is dead straight before you wash it. And you def need sodium free shampoo. I like Organix, but theres a cheap Tresemee Naturals one, or an Elvive one. Enjoy your blow dry!

I posted on here yesterday. Diy job in August, still smooth etc. Washed after 3 days. My big problem is the shampoo. ..its driving me mad, making my scalp so itchy (have sensitive scalp anyway) I'm using the keratin one off amazon that came with the kit. Ive also bought Tresemme keratin smooth but not tried it yet. Can anyone recommend a shampoo for sensitive types?

I've had a google and read about the Loreal ever pure range - has anyone tried that? When you say straighten every day till the first wash Jewel then do you mean my whole head or just the bits that have kinked at all?

So many blowdry questions! Planning to wash on day 3 not 4 so wish me luck.

Hi, I've had salon Brazilian blow drys and DIY (Charles Worthington) and it's not that different doing it yourself and a lot cheaper! I think 3 days is long enough to leave before washing - did you get warned about tucking it behind your ears - found that the hardest bit! Just straighten it if there are any kinks where you've slept on it. The L'oreal ever pure range is really nice, as is the Naked range so just get whatever is on offer! It'll be fine, I panicked when I washed my hair for the first time after having it done professionally but it does stay straight!

Now I'm really confused!!! Just went to Boots and looked at Loreal Ever Pure and Ever Sleek and both list sodium chloride in ingredients?! Is that what I should be avoiding? Also looked at the Organix range but was blinded by the ingredient list and baffled as to what was allowed (no sodium chloride listed from what I could see though). Can anyone recomnend me the exact brand and name that's ok? Ideally I want a bit of body as too ultra sleek doesn't suit me.

I should have spent the £23 shouldn't I :( I've been fuddled by my own tightness.

Hi, I did the DIY Brazillian and having been using Tresemme Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner and it's been good. I waited the 4 days but I didn't have a night out planned

I second the tressemme keratin shampoo and conditioner, it's much better than the Organix one and is as good as the expensive salon ones. I would wash it after 72 hours (that's usually the recommended time).

I've just looked at my L'oreal and it's the Eversleek range which says no sulphates, they are what you want to avoid I think.

Sodium chloride is the one to avoid. Sulphates are not great for hair whether it is keratin treated or not but they won't wreck your BKT. The tresemme keratin shampoo is sodium chloride free and states suitable for use after a professional keratin treatment on the bottle. You can get the shampoo and conditioner for about £8.

I use the Tresemme Naturals range. 'Lower' Sulfates and sodium chloride free.

My kit said to totally avoid sodium chloride.

Oh, and I was a total idiot and used Eversleek when I was at my mam's house without checking the small print ingredients. Definitely had a negative effect on my hair straightening.

I've been using this one. Sodium chloride free and was the recommended one with the Amazon kit I used. No problems so far, although I'm finding that I need to run the straighteners over it daily now (one month after doing it) so I think I might repeat it and hope for a bit longer than a month for the next go. I've read that second and subsequent ones last a bit longer. I wash my hair daily though, so didn't expect it to last the full three months.

That's strange Angie. I've had no problems with it, and I usually have to be really carefully about which shampoo and conditioner etc I use as I get really itchy with lots of them.

I tried the Tresemme one for the first couple of days, until the shampoo from Amazon arrived and that was ok too, but I didn't want to carry on using it as I usually have itchy skin with Tresemme.

definately sodium chloride to avoid, I use tresseme keratin smooth and also sainsburys kids shampoo in cherry almond, sodium chloride free and CHEAP! wait if you can to wash but if its grim wash.

Hello, I use the nano keratin shampoo and it is expensive but lasts absolutely ages - longer than the treatment does. I have long hair and I wash it every 1-2 days.

And I'd wash your hair before the big night out. I can never last the 4 days and my treatments last 3 months. Your hair will be fine.

Oh and I've had them while pregnant and while breastfeeding. My hairdresser told me it would be ok and my baby is fine at nearly a year old.

Rightio... I've bought the pureology shampoo and tresemme conditioner. Going to wash tomorrow (day 3 and a bit) as even though it doesn't look too bad it's starting to honk.

You need to check that advice independently. My understanding is that pregnant or breastfeeding women should not have keratin treatments and neither should children under aged 12.
The reason for this is that the heat application causes aldehyde to be emitted which is a known carcinogen and the risks are higher for babies and infants. The aldehyde stays on the hair (and in the air every time you blow dry).
Lots of treatments are advertising that they are aldehyde free, but independent lab tests show that to be untrue for every brand tested.

That's interesting about the aldehyde and independent testing. I think lots of people on here have bought and used the Amazon keratin kit because it states it's free from that. Do you have a link to your source for the independent testing?

There is some on that link, but a quick google will bring up lots of similar articles. I have used both salon treatments and the amazon kit despite being aware of the research into the products as I figure that if I took every bit of health advice available I would never eat or drink anything and would live in a sterile bubble. But I wouldn't use the treatments if I was pregnant as babies are more vulnerable to risks due to their undeveloped immune systems and fragile skin and it just isn't worth the risk in my opinion.
Obviously there are some more well known concerns with using hair dyes whilst pregnant and some people avoid hair dyes whilst others continue to use them as normal. I'm not saying that anybody shouldn't use keratin whilst pregnant if they want to, it's just about them being aware of the risks so that they can make an informed choice whilst being aware of anything relevant.
