Leather dresses - yay or nay?

freddiefrog · 21/05/2013 20:48

I was in TK Maxx yesterday and saw some leather dresses

It was sort of matte black leather (not shiny), just above knee length, sleeveless shift dress style

I tried it on and really liked it, I have a night out in a few weeks and it would look fab with some black heels.

A bit like this, but longer and not shiny

However, DH made some wisecrack about needing a whip and handcuffs Hmm so I put it back

And, are they all hot and sweaty?

Erm....it's not my cup of tea and I think it does look a little fetish-night for my liking.

If you are whipcrack thin then it will probably look lovely. But it does look more like underwear than outerwear, even if it is a shift dress.

Looks great on models but really really hard to pull off in real life.

Try sitting in a leather dress for an hour. You will get the worlds sweatiest thighs. I've been there!!

Fab for winter, not so much for summer.

I'm 8/10, 5ft 7, not blessed in the boob department think ironing board with 2 buttons sewn on the front

It did look really nice on but I can imagine it will be hot and sweaty, although the event isn't going to be in a hot bar or club or anything, and given the weather lately I'm probably going to freeze

I'm a bit of a nightmare with certain items of clothes, once it's in my head, I get a bit obsessive so I might have to buy it and then take it back when I realise how silly it looks Grin

Is it good quality looking / feeling leather? A simple, not massively tight, highish necked shift, right?

As long as you got the balls to carry it off then go for it! You've most certainly got the figure Envy

Yes, it was a lovely soft leather, finished just above my knee cap, fairly high necked so no cleavage showing (not that I have one to show), fitted but not tight, but not baggy bin liner either. Quite simple (didn't have the exposed zip the Oasis one has), no bells and whistles.

I thought I had the balls, until DH made his whips and handcuffs crack, nothing like shopping with my DH to dent your confidence Grin. He doesn't mean it nastily, it was just a joke; just an ill timed one.

I quite like the idea of a nude, lighter coloured one though

Now I've got leather dresses on my radar, l have to have a hunt around

Thanks

Yes, go for it. I have one that I love. Just make sure you don't wear knee high boots with it, leather boots or fish nets...

as is this. Would date much better too.

But, if you love the TKmaxx one just get it. You'll not find a better bargain - DP was most probably just having an attack of hormones. Ignore.

Oooh! great in either colour. Exposed zip will (eventually) date though.

Oh, I like the last one. I like the first one too, but the courting of the last one I think would suit me better

I quite like the colour of this one (but not the price tag!!!)

That TFfG one is so pretty! will date damned quick though even if it was affordable. Nude as a shade too I think. Exposed zips as well, obviously. Think they'll still be ok on really classic shapes though, at a guess.

It's an investment buy by it's very nature, unless you're made of money it needs to be an excellent cut with a wee bit of somethign special.

x post. The grey is excellent. Model is 5'11" so, what, 3 or 4 inches longer on you?

I think I might actually be in love with that Tom Ford one, but alas, I am not made of money, not even my little toe is made of money Grin

I've got to go into town tomorrow so I'll pop in to TK Maxx and have another look, the fact that I'm still thinking about it means I really liked it

Sorry, xposted again

That's a point, I hadn't noticed the model's height measurements so It would be 4 inches longer on me

Mmm, I don't know now

Leather is great to wear. Stick to black, and as long as you're 8/10,you'll look lovely.

Em, where exactly would you wear a leather dress?

I have my eye on a lovely leather and chiffon dress in warehouse.

Only the top is leather though. Not sure I would be comfy in a full leather shift dress.

If you like it that much, invest in it- I personally think leather items are ones to keep hold of and wear year after year, unless they're a fashion fit it doesn't really date, and only gets better with age. DH might make jokes now, he won't when you get ready for a night out in it, leather dresses are hot!
