Scrolling issues

For the last few days/ weeks when reading thread via talk the page has been so slow to scroll. Some of the long threads 200/300 plus posts can take ages. It's not happening on other sites or on the shorter threads. Very irritating.

Hi Isthiscorrect!

Thanks for flagging.

At the top of the thread, you should have the option to control how many posts you see per page.

If your settings are showing quite a lot of posts per page, this will slow the site down.

The fewer posts per page, the faster you can scroll! Grin

Do you want to have a play with this and let us know how it goes?

I had trouble scrolling yesterday (laptop). It has resolved itself today.

Oh thank god I thought my iPad was fucked.

So sloooowwww.

Thanks Lorna. For a while ever and ever I have always had all the posts on one page, with the newest at the top. I like it like that and it works well for me.
It's only been the last few weeks maybe? maybe less, that it was a problem but boy was it bad. Sooooo slow. It seems so much better today (thanks very much Techie) but I would say it's 9/10 better as opposed to how it was before, but hey I'm much happier in the meantime and mightily releived that my iPad isn't knackered. I'm having scrolling problems too, on an iPad.

It's been happening for about 4 days, it's making the site very frustrating to use, so I'm not staying around much at the moment.

I'm having this too on an iPad with safari. It's really annoying and makes looking at longer threads unbearable. It's fine on my iPhone with chrome and laptop with chrome. It's only started doing it in the last couple of days. What's going on?

JaniceBattersby · 13/05/2017 21:51

Same problem here. Ipad and safari. Threads with anything more tan 100 posts are unbearable and I really don't want to have to go back to having less posts per page due to the larger number of posts that are deleted just as I'm getting through the pages.

Same here, using iPad on safari. Can't even scroll 'active' without going and making a coffee while it loads.

Actually I'm struggling again. Yesterday it was better but today, back to nothing happening. Chrome and iPad for me as well.

It is a massive problem, and not confined to long threads either. It happens on quite short ones too, but I can't replicate it, as it varies a lot. Sometimes, I go from threads I'm On and the thread is a nightmare to scroll through, and then the next time I try thesme thread, it's fine.

It's definitely a problem. It is rendering MN almost unusable.

IPad, safari, software up to date.
Using dt site, not mobile. Threads set to show all on one page (and always has been).

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for letting us know this is still an issue and do keep the details coming, we're really sorry it's making using MN frustrating for you all.

We'll chase this up with our Tech Team now.

WayfaringStranger · 14/05/2017 21:24

Just another one adding that I can't see long threads either. Short threads are ok but ones above 70 odd posts take ages to load.

Report
Jux · 14/05/2017 23:13

N fact, I can't scroll down TIO now. It's really slow and jerky, and it was fully loaded - or it had apparently stopped loading.

Hi all,

Can we check that you're showing 25 posts per page only?

This has a huge effect on how the site runs!

Report
Fluffycloudland77 · 15/05/2017 14:24

No, I like to scroll down looking for ops posts.

It's not been an issue before.

Report
WicksEnd · 15/05/2017 15:15

25 posts per page would be a right PITA. Why so few? I also have it set to highlight the OP's posts. I've never had a problem before now either.

Report
PenguinOfDoom · 15/05/2017 18:31

No, I've always had it set to 1000 posts. It's been fine until the last few days.

Report
Isthiscorrect · 15/05/2017 19:31

Struggling again today. Have always and stil have got it set to 1000 per page. It's just not viable to run a team 25 per page, if you are skimming a long post that would be ridiculous. Please don't get tech to fix it li,e that.

25 posts??? That would be seriously problematic. I have all on one page, so I can see op's posts quickly, and find other posts easily.

At one point, I had to switch to 500 posts or something. I nearly gave up MN altogether then.

Report
AuntPol · 15/05/2017 22:57

Seriously, MNHq, your solution is to only show 25 posts per page? That would be seriously annoying, especially on the longer threads. I probably just wouldn't bother any more.

Like PPs, I've been having problems scrolling through threads on an iPad. I've always had my settings to show 1000 posts, and it's never ever been a problem until the last couple of weeks. But lately it's been so bad that I've just given up - pages take so long to load, or don't load at all.

Pleeeease fix it and make it work like it used to!

Report
Jux · 15/05/2017 23:07

It won't help, anyway. I'm having problems scrolling on this thread! At this rate it'll get down to you telling us to have one post per page and it still won't work.

Report
SilverBirchWithout · 17/05/2017 10:14

This thread currently has only 22 messages, still jerky and slow when scrolling!!

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback. We're afraid that most devices just simply aren't able to withstand loading such a large page - there's nothing tech can do about this one, unfortunately. We know it's not ideal for you, but the 25 posts per page is the best way to ensure a smooth page load; though you can of course choose a higher post-per-page setting if you prefer.

Report
WayfaringStranger · 17/05/2017 11:31

Up until now, every device I've used has easily loaded hundreds of posts. This is recent. I'm not having an issue on any other sites. Has something changed?

Report
Jux · 17/05/2017 11:58

This isn't a large page, and doesn't even have 25 posts yet. None of these posts are particularly long and there are no pictures.

Why is this page hard to load, and hiw wouldmswitching to 25 posts per page help on this thread?

I am really not convinced by that solution, when it won't work on this page.
