Dear MNHQ could we have a new Topic please?

We'd like a Survival/Prepper topic please, if that's possible. Somewhere where we can discuss prepping, techniques, exchange ideas, etc. Not just for the Zombie Apocalypse, a serious topic where we can collate our plans and ideas.

Many thanks

Lots of love

Stratters Wine

Pretty,pretty please.

Prepping isn't just about the inevitable zombocalypse or us going dark, its also about being ready for powercuts, bad weather, and lean times.

I think a Survival board is potentially an excellent idea because I feel from the boards that many MNers are concerned about the way we live and I believe that such a board could also mutate to encompass many things other than prepping - eg sustainable living, parenting for the future, environmental maintenance, skills maintenance etc etc etc.

I'd have to remember not to be Doomandgloompersonified all the time of course.

It's very relevant for a parenting forum, we should be aware of the possibilities of something happening, and have at least basic preparations in place. Parents will have a particularly difficult time, if anything ever happens, and it's no bad thing to raise awareness in advance.

So many people think it's silly, and over worrying, yet both the WHO and the CDC have admitted that we are well overdue a pandemic, particularly flu. And a blackout, or particularly bad winter is another very real possibility. Not to mention the unrest in many regions of the world. Who knows what could happen.

It would be great to have a little place of our own, to discuss things sensibly.

Oh - and here's the thread which started all this. (A former Discussion of the Day.)

It'll be empowering,and a valuable resource.

And very relevant during austerity.

Actually sounds quite a good idea, Stratters.

There are too many topics already.

That's why every bloody thing ends up in AIBU.

Because all the topics are "too quiet".

If we had fewer topics, there would be more activity in each topic.

Or people could use Active like a pro.

Let's get rid of AIBU, that would solve the problem.

I suppost the idea of a survival topic, sounds interesting.

I'd agree with that Trills although I suspect that some of the topics would have to be combined (where possible) in the first instance to allow for .....personal interest..... from MNers.

Suggestions would doubtless be welcomed by MNHQ - in particular, I suspect, by Tech. I hate to think of the size of Tech's bucket list.

This is a great idea IMO. A pandemic is pretty much a certainty isn't it? The question isn't if, but when?

Mumsnet could be an invaluable resource in a pandemic or other natural disaster, why not start talking about it now?

^^ while the computers still work, of course!

I think it is a brilliant idea, but how well supported it would be is debatable.

Everyone and their uncle posts on chat or AIBU for 'traffic'.

Having said that, it would mean that interested people would find it and post, making it good to read.

Great idea!

Def a great idea. We are bobblehatty enough to have dinnertable conversations about surviving a variety of catastrophes, so a whole Mumsnet topic to steal ideas from consult would be wonderful.

And batteries I hope Olivia.
Might I suggest some solar/wind up options too, plus oil/parrafin lamps...

Plenty of gin will do the trick, Olivia - at least short term.

Shock Yes,prepper forums aren't really on the same wavelength as your average MNetter, are they?

RosesAreOverated · 21/03/2015 14:17

Sites not sights.

Awful idea. Please, no.

There are enough other forums around for such a niche (and ridiculous) topic.
