We moved to Norway at the beginning of April and he had his first day in Norwegian school on the 7th. He started in a class mix of year one and year 2. He spoke some Norwegian then, but very clumsily and with no grammatic sense. But today I had a word with his teacher. He is at the same level as the Norwegian Year One children, and is racing ahead in reading. He now reads almost as well in Norwegian as in English, getting the pronounciations right, and even has three more letters to contend with! He is ahead in maths too.
The original plan was to keep him back and do entire year 1 from this automn, due to his lacking norwegian skills, but he has come along so well that he will be moving on to year 2 together with his current Year 1 class and get his lessons with them!
He is 6 btw. They start school at 6 in Norway.
Hurra!
