Abortion on the 17/1 and positive pregnancy test?

Hi all,
I had a medical abortion at 6 weeks on the 17/1 this year. I had the mirena inserted on the 1/2. I was told to do a pregnancy on the 7th and the 14th. The one on the 7th was faint but there was x2 lines which to be honest I expected however I have just done the second one as I forgot on the 14th and it’s darker then the one on the 7th??? I’ve rang Marie stopes and she’s just informed me that the mirena isn’t 100% effective from day one and I should be using condoms for the first 7 days! NO ONE informed me about this and i assumed it was effective from insertion just like the Cooper one was as no one told me any different. Could this actually be a new pregnancy or is there some other reason for why the line is darker? Please any advise is welcome xxx
Ps I have attached a couple of pics the one in the brown bathroom is the test from the 7th and the other one I did tonight x

Hi OP
Just an idea to buy a digital test. It will tell you how many weeks (up to 3+) and then you can hopefully determine whether it is a new pregnancy or not.

I did this this RLOU88, but then I thought wouldn’t they both say the same at this stage anyway like 1-2 weeks as id only be around 2 weeks. Thank you for your suggestion xx

I had a medical abortion on the 30/1 and I got negative test results 11 days later. I was only 4+6 though so I would have had less hormones present than you. I would think that you should be testing negative by now though as it’s been a month. Did you have a follow up scan at all to check the pregnancy had definitely passed?
I was told that we are incredibly fertile after an abortion and to use condoms alongside any other method of contraception for the first 2-3 weeks. Did you have sex soon after the abortion? The Mirena does take about a week to be effective without the use of condoms too so I’m shocked they didn’t inform you of that. That’s terrible!

Also phone your GP and ask for a blood test to detect pregnancy. If you get it done each day over the course of 3 days they can check if your HCG is rising or coming down. If it’s rising then it’s definitely a new pregnancy. If it’s coming down then you could still just have hormones present from the abortion which are taking a while to get out of your system (it can take some women 4-8 weeks to get a negative)

Thank you purplerain, I had the abortion on the 17th and we didn’t have sex again until 3/4 days (I can’t remneber the exact) after I had the coil in so we’re talking 3/4 of feb possibly a few days after that. No I haven’t had any follow up with MS they’ve said that if the second test was positive ring them but then that’s when they informed me that I should of used condoms along with the coil. No one has told me this at all I’ve got a leaflet which doesn’t mention it either as I 100% would and would of probably not even had sex until the first 7 days was over to make 100% sure no ‘accidents’ happened. The clinic also didn’t say use double protection. Just don’t have sex for 2 weeks due to infection which we 100% didn’t. I was concerned there might be some left in me which is giving off the preg hormone? Could this be a possibility? I’m sure I saw it come ‘out’ so to speak so if any is there it must be tissue of some kind xx

There's quite a difference between those lines - it could just be different tests and different urine concentration. There could also be some placental tissue left but that would lead to the the hormones falling more slowly, not them rising again. As PP says you need a blood HCG test done and then repeated a couple of days later, either through the clinic, GP or EPU. That should help work out if it's a new pregnancy, failed abortion or incomplete abortion which will resolve itself.

Yes if you still have some tissue left behind then it can continue to give you a positive result. My friend had this and had to take the abortion pills a second time to clear the remainder out. She then got a negative result a couple of weeks after that. I think the only way to know is to have an ultrasound or blood tests. Preg tests won’t tell you whether it’s a new pregnancy or leftover tissue and the longer you leave it the more difficult the situation will get. Hope you’re ok as it must be a very stressful situation for you

My GP is fully booked today 🤦🏼‍♀️ What else could I try? I have contacted the clinic and they are getting back to me with an app date as they are fully booked also until the 28th of this month 🤦🏼‍♀️ Everything is going wrong! I’m concerned that if it is a new pregnancy won’t something bad happen because of the coil? X

Nothing bad will happen because of the coil. people fall pregnant when using coils, contraceptive pill, implants etc. None of them are 100% full proof. Is there an emergency care drop in centre near you? They could give you the blood tests. Have you told your GP that it’s an emergency and you need an appt for a blood test this week as an absolute priority? If you’re pushy with them then they’ll squeeze you in. It takes 2 seconds for someone to give you a blood test.
Do you have the funds to pay for a private ultrasound?
Not really sure what else to suggest

I’ve just got an apt for the doc to ring me today so hopefully they will let me have a blood test. And we can see if it’s going up or down. I can’t veliebe this is happening!! Thank you for your support xxxx

You’ll need more than one blood test over the space of 2-3 days. I really hope it’s going down and you just have some tissue left over. You could take the pills again if that’s the case or sometimes it just works it’s way out with your next period by itself. If you are pregnant again do you have good support for whatever decision you decide to make? Good luck xxx

Thank you, yes I have got good support here. I’m just concerned as I have been informed the coil can increase the risk of ectopic preg so I’ll need a scan to rule that out? I have been feeling feverish and originally was concerned that I ether had a coil infection or a bit of tissue was inside. But I’m not having no discharge at all which I’m sure I would get xx

Poor you - this happened to me too - I tested positive 3 weeks later and had to go back for an urgent scan. The fear is that you might have an ectopic twin growing, a secondary fear is that you have 'product' left over from the first abortion, and the third delight is that you might have a molar pregnancy which is not great. TBH the whole testing positive thing became a complete nightmare for me as I had to go back to the clinic for blood tests every 48 hours for 2 or 3 weeks, to check the rate my HCG was falling. My arms looked like I was a heroin addict. They also wanted me to take methotrexate (which is anti arthritic/anti cancer drug) which I refused (other complicated reasons). Then once my HCG had fallen enough, I had weekly bloods, then fortnightly, then monthly - the whole thing went on for 4 months and stressed the hell out of me. PM me if you need moral support to get through!

Did you get antibiotics to take?
If you had an infection you would probably be having cramps and a bad smell down there. Maybe get one of those cheap thermometers off amazon for like £3 so you can keep an eye on your temp over the next few weeks. Anything over about 38.5 is classed as a fever and could indicate an infection.
I would speak to your dr and try get a round of blood tests done for this week. I’d also book yourself a scan at the clinic even if you have to wait a week or two for it

Well today I’m feeling much better no fever or chills that’s resolved so I’m thinking possibly viral. I don’t have any discharge or any bleeding at all and no odour. I’m a nurse and dipped my urine at work which was fine also. I am having the sore boobs, headaches and slight nausea again! I’ve had bloods done and he’s aware there’s a coil. At present he just wants to do bloods which I’ve just had and I’m guessing pending results he’ll take it from there. Like you said I’ll never more blood results to see if their going up or down! I’m just so confused how I’d ovulate 14 days after the abortion I know it’s possible but you never think it’ll be you! Xx

My sister fell pregnant a week after an abortion. The nurse told me I could fall pregnant any day from the day of the abortion up until my next period as my cycle will be messed up. If you’re getting pregnancy symptoms again and your tests are getting darker then it does indicate that you could be pregnant again. Sending you a big hug xxx

If it was ectopic would the hormones go up as normal? If that makes sence? On the 12th I did have some cramp and when I wiped I did have a smear of blood on the tissue but I thought it might be normal with the coil as people usually have bleeding in the first 3 months. I have had nothing. Also if there was tissue left would jt make the levels of HCG increase? Or stay the same xx

Both could make the levels increase. Probably not as fast as a normal pregnancy would but the levels would still increase or stay the same

Hi all, I don’t have the results of the bloods just yet but I did another test today.
I have attached it. Would you say it’s darker? Xx

Doing other tests isn't really going to help work out what's happening. I'm sorry, it must be torture for you. Will they tell you your result from yesterday? Are you having more bloods soon?

Report
Purplerain101 · 20/02/2018 16:07

Yeah it looks darker but like a PP said, those cheapy tests can give varied results. I was getting darker ones and lighter ones on the same days when I was pregnant.
I got negatives with those same tests 11 days after my abortion though so I really do think you are either pregnant again or your abortion wasn’t 100% successful and you need to repeat it

I tried to get in contact with my gp surgery today but they were closed for training 🤦🏼‍♀️ It sounds daft I know but I don’t want to turn up on Thursday and then just assume I want another abortion. I know they will scan me to see if they can see any retained product but how are they going to know what’s what?

OP posts:

Purplerain101 · 20/02/2018 16:42

Well you will be about 9 weeks pregnant now if the abortion completely failed and the pregnancy is still growing and they will be able to hear the heartbeat at that stage. If the abortion was partially successful but you have retained tissue then they will be able to see that the sac has passed but there are still big blood clots etc inside of you.
If it’s a new pregnancy then they either won’t be able to see anything (as you’ll be at such an early stage) or they’ll be able to see the sac but it will be tiny. They will then give you the option to keep it or go through the process again
