To dummy or not to dummy??

I can't decide whether to get my 3 week old a dummy. DC1 never had one but we did get into a difficult-to-break habit of her needing to bf to get to sleep and I wonder if this would have been avoided with a dummy. I'm reluctant to introduce something that will be hard to take away later but want to avoid previous pitfalls.
Cake/eat!!
What's the dummy consensus??

I'm a big dummy fan. Both my children had them from birth, eldest only had it at night time from 12 months and threw it in the bin herself at 18 months, my youngest is now 10 months and only has it for naps and bedtime but if I have problems getting rid of it later on I will call on the dummy fairy :) Maybe I've been lucky that neither of them are bothered about having it during the day. Much easier to get rid of dummy than break a thumb/finger sucking habit, my niece has only just stopped finger sucking age 6 as people were making comments at school :(

I would use the dummy. This is because I didn't have one so sucked my thumb instead, and ended up needing 4 different braces to fix the delightful Confused sticking out teeth that resulted. It took until I was 15 to fix.

Ds didn't have a dummy until 8 weeks when hospital staff asked if they could give him one. He had it 24/7 for the 11 days he was in and did love it for a few months after.

Now at 17 months he only has it to sleep and at some point in the next 6 months hopefully it will go altogether!

My 3 (all bf) all had dummies and they were an absolute lifesaver. I hated dummies and had thought that 'no child of mine.......', but when DD1 howled and howled non stop I cracked and got her one and then all was rosy. I found them totally invaluable for getting the babies off to sleep (although I used it just as an aid to get to sleep then popped it out once they had dropped off so they didn't get used to sleeping with it in and wake up when it dropped out). All mine stopped using the dummy at around 4 or 5 months as they became avid thumb suckers and the dummies were spat out in favour of thumb (so I'm afraid that they were no help for us on the risk of sticking out teeth!).

Same as Nelly.
I never thought I would use them. But they are life saver, just gives immediate comfort for my boys, they just relax and drift off to sleep. Just weaning 21 month off during daytimes.

My 11wo has had one since about 3 weeks. She only has it occasionally - when she's tired in the day and won't quite settle herself. She doesn't need it to get to sleep at night as bedtime routine has fixed that (previously she cried every time she lost her dummy), and she doesn't seem to want it at other times. I usually give her the dummy when she is ready for her daytime nap and take it out just as I put her down in her basket.

As long as you don't just bung the dummy in all the time then I don't think you need to stress about it.
