do you think?

ds2 wants to buy one with his birthday money...

MerlinsBeard Sun 25-Feb-07 14:34:45

yes

assuming u mean the shuffle rather than the nano or video.

kittylette Sun 25-Feb-07 14:35:53

just get him an mp3 player for £30, hes only 8 not 18!!

sauce Sun 25-Feb-07 14:37:08

no, I don't think so. My dd (6) loves mine, although I have to "set it up" for her. She has a Nintendo DS, as do all the other little spoilt brats in her class so if they can figure those out, they can handle an ipod.

I wouldn't buy it for an 8 year old, but if it's his money and that's what he wants, I'd let him. At least it should last him a good few years (if he is good at looking after things) rather than him wanting a better one next year.

tescos do a really good basic mp3 player for £5, ds1 who is 7 has one, its ideal for when we go out in the car, i wouldnt spend much more then that cos he's likely to break it or lose it.

he's had an mp3 player before, i think he means the nano.

i thought he is too young but he is going on and on, insisting it's his money he can buy what he likes

Yes, I think he is too young for an expensive and fragile iPod. Other MP3 player, fine for occasional use.
How much money did he get cheeryface Ds is lucky if his runs to a copy of the Beano and a slab of chocolate !

cheeryface Sun 25-Feb-07 14:48:15

i have a lot of very generous relatives, he actually got £150 !

Marina Sun 25-Feb-07 14:52:19

He is very welcome to buy me an ipod I will take good care of it

Part of me thinks yes too young, but then it is his money and if he loses or breaks it then it's a painful lesson learnt and you'll have ammo for the next big request.

ipods to youngsters are just part of their world I think. The only thing I would really worry about is someone taking a fancy to it and physically mugging him for it. Don't kids get this happen with trendy phones?

MerlinsBeard Sun 25-Feb-07 14:53:47

thats a ridiculous amount for an 8 yr old to get.

When i was younger, if i got any money i had to put half in the bank

cheeryface Sun 25-Feb-07 14:55:45

good point tinygang.

cod, it's alot of money but people want to give it, none was from me. i bought him the england strip and a lightsabre!

Soapbox Sun 25-Feb-07 14:57:35

I think it is too expensive and the risk of losing/breaking it as his age is too high!

What is wrong with his MP3 player?

Both my DCs have cheapie MP3 players with audio books downloaded on them, to keep them occupied while on plane journeys/at the airport and that works fine

Soapbox Sun 25-Feb-07 14:58:31

Open a bank account for him instead - let him keep £20 and save the rest - he'll thank you for it when he is older!

cheeryface Sun 25-Feb-07 14:58:45

he's crying now

i should have done the bank account idea from the start. i have always just let him spend it

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh he's driving me mad!

TinyGang Sun 25-Feb-07 15:04:16

Any cheaper deals second hand on Ebay maybe?

Do all his friends have them too, is that part of it?

I don't know about 8 being too young but I'm 42 and I think I'm too old. Saw one being demo'd yesterday and stood there like a wally open mouthed at all the pretty lights

cheeryface Sun 25-Feb-07 15:09:01

his older bother has one.

dh thinks he should have it.

there is serious tantrumming going on in the cheery household i can tell you.

TinyGang Sun 25-Feb-07 15:16:32

Oh dear

I'd be wavering towards yes, but it depends I guess on how good he is at looking after his stuff etc.

I think I've gone too far the other way you see. Mine all have bank accounts and have accumulated quite a bit but they don't really ever spend their money and dd (also 8) needs to start to learn the value of it, which you only learn by spending it I guess. Catch 22.

puppydavies Sun 25-Feb-07 15:21:21

dd (3) has one , a shuffle. but i wouldn't give in to tantrumming. then again, if i'd originally said he could spend it i wouldn't go back on it either.

his money, his choice, but is he likely to get mugged for it round you?

cheeryface Sun 25-Feb-07 15:23:38

mugged YES

NadineBaggott Sun 25-Feb-07 15:24:23

Yes just how much music does an active 8 year old sit and listen to. It's just another 'must have' item with no real value to an 8 year old.
