no, I don't think so. My dd (6) loves mine, although I have to "set it up" for her. She has a Nintendo DS, as do all the other little spoilt brats in her class so if they can figure those out, they can handle an ipod.

I wouldn't buy it for an 8 year old, but if it's his money and that's what he wants, I'd let him. At least it should last him a good few years (if he is good at looking after things) rather than him wanting a better one next year.

tescos do a really good basic mp3 player for £5, ds1 who is 7 has one, its ideal for when we go out in the car, i wouldnt spend much more then that cos he's likely to break it or lose it.

Yes, I think he is too young for an expensive and fragile iPod. Other MP3 player, fine for occasional use.

Part of me thinks yes too young, but then it is his money and if he loses or breaks it then it's a painful lesson learnt and you'll have ammo for the next big request.

ipods to youngsters are just part of their world I think. The only thing I would really worry about is someone taking a fancy to it and physically mugging him for it. Don't kids get this happen with trendy phones?

Both my DCs have cheapie MP3 players with audio books downloaded on them, to keep them occupied while on plane journeys/at the airport and that works fine

I don't know about 8 being too young but I'm 42 and I think I'm too old. Saw one being demo'd yesterday and stood there like a wally open mouthed at all the pretty lights

I'd be wavering towards yes, but it depends I guess on how good he is at looking after his stuff etc.

I think I've gone too far the other way you see. Mine all have bank accounts and have accumulated quite a bit but they don't really ever spend their money and dd (also 8) needs to start to learn the value of it, which you only learn by spending it I guess. Catch 22.

dd (3) has one , a shuffle. but i wouldn't give in to tantrumming. then again, if i'd originally said he could spend it i wouldn't go back on it either.
